Ugh, Sony increased the size of their development studios while many are still working on triple A single player titles. Sucker Puncher, Naughty Dog released their games in 2020 and development cycle for triple A titles is 3 years. Days Gone started working on a new IP shortly after. SMS and GG launched their games this generation. Insomniac released Spider- Man 2 and they're working on Wolverine next. You really need to some more research.

Bro, let’s face it, they had no choice. We all knew they were a dud from the very beginning. $ony couldn’t afford Activision/Blizzard/King anyway if they tried. 😂 Plus knowing all the dirty practice $ony’s been pulling, Acti/Blizz/King or we’d all be in worlds of trouble because $ony would be in way over their heads.

Everyone sees how much money GTA Online makes and think "Gee, we could make a version of that." What they don't realize is there's only ever going to be a handful of live service games that are insanely profitable and the vast majority fail. It's like the mid to late 2000s when there were a ton of WOW knockoffs that all failed.

@@Flyon86not to mention most of the live service games that succeed have backup plans(GTA online has the single player portion) or the focus was never to be live service from the start. Look at Fortnite or even GTA Online, both started off as single player/co op focused experiences. Both grew from established games or games with a fall back if the live service part failed. And some that became popular had years of development before becoming big(launching and having to fix things before people wanted to play them).

The fact Sony is developing *TWELVE* live service games is already a bad sign. But knowing they plan to release 6 of them just next year is actually insane! Personally I HATE live service games. Just like MMOs, it requires a lot of time and near devotion to play, foregoing other games. And that's the issue - people can only really invest so much time into gaming, they can't very well invest in all of them at the same time. If Sony could find one that has great potential and back that one heavily, then perhaps it could become huge.

I play all types of games from all types of genres and have played live service games. Making 12 live service games at the same time (almost half of them coming out during the same year) is a SERIOUS mistake for the following reason: it's IMPOSSIBLE to play that many live service games at the same time. Even if I wanted to, it's NOT possible due to the amount of hours each of them take. If they are smart, only make ONE (and ONLY one) live service game (make it special) and turn the others into SINGLE player experiences (want to add OPTIONAL multiplayer? That's fine. But prioritizing SINGLE player experiences with NO microtransactions would bring them more money. Releasing 12 live service games will cause all those games to cannibalize each others sales since it's impossible to play that many on a regular basis. Not to mention having that many will make them all less important, also resulting in lower sales and all 12 games getting their servers shutdown at rapid speeds). So in review, take 11 of those 12 games and turn them into single player focused games (which is the formula that has worked for Playstation for decades) and take only ONE (and ONLY one) of those games and turn it into the best live service game they can, making it special.
@evillecaston

The problem is that their signature "blockbuster" games take too much time and money to produce. Even if they're profitable, Sony wants more at the end of the day. As for why they're doing a 180 into live services...I have no idea. Maybe they think by brute forcing so many live services, at least one will succeed? I imagine Sony will be in for a rude awakening, if they can even get any live services out the door at this rate...
@johnpenguinthe3rd13
@johnpenguinthe3rd13 7 ай бұрын
@@evillecaston Honestly, it sounds like someone came up with the absurdly horrible strategy to start brute forcing as many live service games as possible to see if they can get one that will succeed. However, whoever came up with that horrible strategy doesn't realize that if they release the first five or six (of their 12) live service games in ONE year (which is a terrible mistake since many live service games tend to cannibalize each other since gamers only have so many hours and money to support a single live service game, let alone multiple at once) it's going to result in ALL of those games not making enough profits, resulting in ALL their servers getting shutdown pretty fast. Once people start seeing that the player counts are near dead, they will assume that the servers might get shut down and will stay clear of ALL of them (every single one of them is going to get hit with that stigma, resulting in ALL of them failing and dying). It's almost a guarantee they will end up having 12 financial bombs on their hands. If they only release ONE (and only ONE) live service game and devote to making that ONE live service game as special as possible and with a guaranteed long term plan (where even if it's not financially successful at first and gets tons of hatred at launch, they can devote their time to fixing the game and making it better, kind of like what happened with Fallout 76 where the first two years of that game during 2018 and 2019 were a freaking disaster but they eventually turned it around and made it a much better game with the 2020 and 2021 Wastelanders and Steel Reign updates and they have the Atlantic City updates for next month and next year ready to go) that would be much better since people know that the servers won't get shutdown in one year and that the game will get updates for years and will be more willing to give the game a chance at some point in time. But brute forcing 12 live service game is going to result in 12 financial flops. Brute forcing multiple live service games isn't going to work.

I suppose Sony's push towards live services was a response to Microsoft basically swallowing Activision Blizzard into their ecosystem fearing that the COD cash-cow would be cut off from them, but that doesn't explain everyone else thinking they could make a live service that could compete with Fortnite or Rainbow Six Siege. I mean, Sega pulled the plug on Hyenas before it even had a chance to possibly recoup the money spent on developing.

These 3rd party AAA exclusives take over 3 years to develop and produce. If Sony has mostly live service games in the pipeline right now it could be a matter of years to pivot back to publishing single player Sony games. That's a pretty big drought.

I don't mind live service games necessarily, but a single company planning to put out TEN of them within the next five years is ludicrous. PS players might choose like one or two they like and never touch the others and then Sony will be left with 8 expensive money sinks. Even if Marathon or Factions does really well out the gate, their profits will have to make up for the 8 other DOA live service games in development. If this initiative at Sony is being done for profit and not for engagement and pushing the PS ecosystem they're in for a really rude awakening.

I want to point out one major oversight you made which is that many games are moving to unreal 5 like bungies marathon you mentioned for instance.i would argue that developers openly stating that using a new engine like ue5 have created many challenges that has lead to far less titles being released on the new gen consoles as you pointed out in the video

Instead of working on more features for PS5 they decided to flush millions of dollars down the drain for live service games no one is going to play. SIE is in for a real awakening, maybe Sony will bring SIE back to Japan after all this.

Cloud gaming isn't going to take over anything Rich. What's more economic, putting a data center in every town to reduce the abhorrent input lag and compression artifacts down to something less abhorrent, or selling everyone a $500 box every 5-8 years that the end user is paying the power and internet bills for? (game streaming is a total electricity and bandwidth hog compared to just uploading the game maybe a few times per user, and bandwidth is not free.) Game streaming is maxed out at 1080p 60fps, I tried 4K game streaming and it looked worse than local 1080p native. People don't realize that the HDMI cable going from their console/PC to their screen has up to 48gbps going through it depending on the devices. I can pay $300 a month for 10gbps internet if I want, and that's not even a fourth the bandwidth that HDMI 2.1 has lol

Focusing so much on Live Services was a bad move; probably one that costed PlayStation a lot. Besides the excuse of difficulty traveling, I wouldn't be surprised if Jim Ryan is 'retiring' as a cost cutting measure. I do agree that PlayStation should shift focus to more _First Person_ 😏 (First Party) AAA games instead of Live Services.

Its amazing how, when literally everybody tells Sony "Hey, if you remake Bloodborne, we will give you all the money you could ever dream of!" and, instead of doing the easy thing that will make them all the money they could ever dream of, they just keep trying to make a bunch of live services that are becoming less and less popular by the day. Like, they could make more money with a 0 effort port of Bloodborne to PC than they will ever make on Destiny even before accounting for how much they spent acquiring Bungie. I wonder how they stay afloat when they seem so against making money.

Instead of buying Bungie they should’ve went out and bought a handful of small/indie game studios. Pump some money in to them and have them just start cranking out games. 1-2 big games a year with 1-2 smaller games each quarter would be insane and much more feasible. Would also help them combat the inevitable onslaught of games coming from Xbox in the coming years.

speaking of xbox, didnt they get faced with this exact same reality during the days of xbox one? sea of thieves and halo 5? along with the original console announcement making it more of a service platform in general? people complain about halo infinites monetisation but it's so much more tame than a lot of live service games (but xbox is still dealing with the issues even a more tame live service brings) so it is weird sony execs would look at that fire and repeat the same mistakes

Seams like a lot of Japanese companies seam to be getting on to trends the moment the trends become unpopular. Like how Sqenix decided to invest in to blockchain right after NFT bubble burst. To be fair this was probably a decision of the western gaming branch of as Sony kinda doesn't even care about Japans market anymore.

While i agree live service sucks it makes money, i also dont think there entire library is going to be live service. Just because they only announced those doesnt mean there is more other types of games coming. They are a big company and we will continue to see the first party AAA games and games that they take chances on.

I don’t hate live service idea. A game I enjoy that’s constantly updated is fine but it’s the greed by the companies that ruin them. Avengers is the big example of we promised so many updates but people wanted to buy MCU costumes for 15 bucks a piece and well “live service everyone!” If you want to do right for your fan base it’s updating the game in a way players want to come back and play that game. A game like No Mans Sky say that was released with the features it promised and didn’t have to go free update dlc quality if you had these updates of the magnitude being released over the span of 7 years obviously keeping the game alive and giving fans content after content then I’m ok with paying for that work. Except NMS released in a bad state and in order to do right to gamers all it had to be free. But keeping a couple guys in the office modeling MCU costumes for your game probably all at once and release it over time does not justify a 15 dollar price tag yeah those people are still working but when you opt out to actual cutscenes for com I book style cutscenes in the later campaigns shows the laziness of a live service game and that’s what is not wanted.

Sony has one off year and its doom and gloom. From the leaks we know that most of the live service games are either from new studios like Firewalk (Concord), Firesrpite (Twisted Metal), Haven (Fairgames) etc. Or they're from second-party studios like Arrowhead. Of the GaaS games we know of that are from first-party, we know most of those studios also have traditional single player games in development. Naughty Dog has at least one, maybe two, games in development aside from The Last of Us multiplayer project. Heavily rumored to be The Last of Us 3 and a new IP. And they're also supposedly assisting Visual Arts Group on Uncharted 5. Guerrilla has that multiplayer Horizon game and probably Horizon 3. The only studios who might exclusively be doing live service games are Studio London and Media Molecule. Which, when's the last time we got something that isn't Singstar or a VR game from Studio London. A GaaS might be an upgrade for them. And MM is unclear. Their game may or may not be GaaS. Even their new studio Firesprite, which is maybe doing a GaaS Twisted Metal, is also doing a new first-person survival horror game. Santa Monica is confirmed to have been working on a second game alongside God of War Ragnarok. Likely a new IP from Cory Barlog. And they may also have a God of War half-sequel similar to Lost Legacy/Miles Morales too. None of these things are concretely announced but neither are these GaaS games that are being called a "mistake" already. The doom and gloom is so overblown.
