Sony RCD-W500C 5 CD Changer/Burner Working

Circular carriage style CD changers are boring! Here we have a 5-CD changer with only a door big enough for a single CD to fit into, and a CD elevator within. I've always enjoyed watching how these work, ever since my Panasonic SC-AK310 stereo system I got in 2002. Now, sadly, I sold that one before I started making videos regularly, but in general it's pretty similar to how this Sony works. I think this method is actually quicker than the Panasonic's tho.

I enjoyed this video. You had some fun. I have an RCD-W50C, and the 5-disc changer stopped working about a year ago. So today, I finally removed the cover, and sure enough, one of Sony's cheapy, thin drive belts got so stretched out, that it was falling off the spindles.

I have the same model and the belts on it need replacing. Wish me luck with finding those! Installing them should be somewhat easy thanks to your video!

You can get a huge selection of different sized belts on ebay in one lot dirt cheap, and just choose which ones fit with the proper tension.

I've owned one of these burners since 2005. Never had a single problem with the unit. Note - Only Uses CD-R/RW Music Disc.

I honestly didn't know there was a difference, but sure enough it would not accept my RWs I guess because they're not specifically "music" RWs.

I have one I bought for $20 to resell and the person said it works but clearly it doesn't as the left side doesn't open and the right side does open but it's a little sticky. Questioning whether I want to put the $23 into new belts and risk only being able to sell it for $40 or less, or sell it for $40 now. On the plus side the belts don't look hard to replace.

I only deal with the hardware side of things, that's more software/firmware related, or possibly a laser going out (another thing I don't mess with). Sony was known for sub-par lasers, especially in their MiniDisc players.

decided to look up a video on this burner. my deck a drive is stuck and won't open. b still works so i use it occasionally since i have it still hooked up to my surround sound. just curious what 3 discs i have in disc 3-5 since the light is on those three

Probably just need replacement belts and it may work properly again.

What i always do when any tray loader wont open close i just give it a slight tap and many times that will temporarily help it.

Ugh! That “second motor” is killing me right now - been trying to find videos on eject issues for this machine and I’ve come to the conclusion that my “second Moto” is either burned out or stuck due to lack of grease and storage…going to be such a pain to fix this thing

Ebay belts work from China. "100x 40-135mm Mix Cassette Tape Machine Square Belt " I just did mine and changed all 5 belts .

@@SergeiGerasymov Just wondering on the tension you used as I got the belts but it lacks power in opening, got any suggestions?

@@NotesFromTheUnderground2 I don't really remember. I just used a replacement belt from the bag that was closer to the one I was replacing. Make sure you got all 5 belts replaced. 3 are used to move them and 1&1 on each side to open both trays. Maybe try the one with a smaller circumference than the one you have. Hoping any of this helps. lmk

@@SergeiGerasymov I only changed 4 because deck 2 works fine, but deck 1 is where the problem is as it's struggling to open the tray, the old belts I had were of no use as they were all tangled around the middle pulley when I opened it up, will probably try to fit ones with the most tension and hopefully they work.

I have one just like that. But I think one of the belts burned out. I used to not be able to get it to disk 5 until tonight. Now it won't go to any disk. It's stuck on disk 1!

I'm also too nervous to take it apart, afraid that I'll break it.

It's not easy to break it... A few screws and you lift the cover off. The belts are easily accessible and removable as well. Hopefully yours haven't melted like I've seen in old tape decks...

Brandon, I've had this same deck for like 15 or 16 years and it worked perfectly until lately, but now the deck A trays won't open. When I press any of the 5 open buttons, it reads open, but it doesn't open. Any idea what could be wrong?

@@NotesFromTheUnderground2 Unfortunately not. I haven't opened it up yet, I'm not very mechanical. Could it be a pulley or belt? Also, deck a doesn't read or play CD's unless I turn the power on and off multiple times, makes a whining noise too. Any advice would be helpful, thanks.

@@jamesh2711 I'm on the same boat as you, but what you describe sounds like the samething I'm going through, I got mine by buying a whole system and they never mentioned it has this problem once I opened it up I saw all the belts were worn out, I bought a batch of belts and I'm not getting a good result because I'm not sure what the tension is as I started this project today, if I find its just the tension I will post it back here.

I have same model & have mine open right now as yours cant get the cds to come out door wont open up have any idea what i can do to get the door to open up?

@@NotesFromTheUnderground2 Three years later since I posted anything bout the fix on my Sony 500c I just recently went into it & replace a broken belt with rubber band same size, could not find replacement belts but someone told me while back rubber bands work great & since I replaced mine few days ago works like new & amazing thing is I bought the package of rubber bands at dollar tree store which the rubber bands are actually very durable made don't look or feel cheap either.

not that I can think of... Just, if you can, make sure everything works before you buy. Sony lasers aren't the best (well known for quitting in MiniDisc recorders), but if it's little-used, I wouldn't worry about it.
