One of the best 2ch receivers you can buy today. Buy the way I paid $149 just before xmas. I added a subwoofer (Polk sw10-$149) to enhance the bass and now it sounds like a high end system which probably costs $1000 or more. Kudos to Sony for coming up with such a simple to use receiver.

@crisjr64782 жыл бұрын
@@TADDs101 it’s a 2 channel so you just wire it directly left and right. This receiver has A and B speaker inputs so you wire front speakers to speaker A out and subwoofer to speaker B out. @@budsmoker4201120 That is a fine way to do it, when your sub can take speaker level input. It doesn't stress the Sony, since the sub has it's own amp.

@@budsmoker4201120 I did the same thing. I have the Sony Dh550 and I only got it because I knew it was a newer model and the price was dirt cheap. I was wowed for sure had ok to good low end bass and finally a Sony with a clean top end in the amp section. Not perfect by any means but these Sony dh150,190,550,590 models hold their own when compared to more expensive receivers or amps.

I'm surprised that the HDMI into my TV... Which is a Samsung an old one I like six or seven years old... Run from the $44 Sony DVD... Still allows the audio RCA's to work through the Sony receiver when a movie is or concert dvd is playing... I read where if you chose HDMI you wouldn't get any sound from the RCA's but in my case sound is being sent to the TV via HDMI and it's also being pushed through the receiver the RCA... Which makes it even more enjoyable. Choosing the selection that shuts down the EQ and allows you to go with the EQ from your source if you have a source that has an EQ like the KEIID... If you don't have an EQ source probably not a good idea to use that selection. It might muddy it up. Hands down this is a wonderful setup as redundant and embarrassing for being redundant as I've been about this my apologies lol
@lethrbear322 жыл бұрын
I hacked mine by hooking up a sub to the B speakers output and run both A/B at the same time. You don't get a drop in wattage because the crossover and amp on the sub makes it invisible. The Sony doesn't sense anything hooked up to the B channel because of that. You're supposed to use either 8 ohm or 16 ohm speakers with this. This amp is actually rated at 100 watts per channel at 8 ohms I use 250 watt passive PA monitors with no distortion and it's fucking LOUD. I also have a vintage 7 band Sony EQ running through my turntable and it's sounds stellar.

I bought one of these on your recommendation to fill in for my vintage Kyrocera while it is in the shop for a tuneup. I drive 4 Klipsch Heresy’s in a BIG room 35’ x 20’ …hoping the 100 wpc clain would come through. The Sony is a pleasant surprise. Is it as good as my Kyrocera? No. But it is good enough to keep me happy until my regular receiver returns. There seems to be more than enough power. Your review of the sound quality was right on. Compared to the Kyrocera it sounds “thin” not full, not incredibly detailed, at higher volumes, but not bad either. It is very convenient to use, the BT streams great, pairs easily, I noticed good separation with streaming Amazon Music, yea, the wire hookups, are cheap, it should have a sub out and a better FM antenna setup….but it all works. For the $ (I paid $140) you can’t beat it.

This may be the best option starting point for a new AB amp if you are on a budget. There are lots of options for class D also with a smaller and lighter footprint which may only have one or two inputs. The only thing I don't like about this are the cheap speaker clips. But this supposedly can drive a wide range fine at low to moderate volumes. At that price, never a problem getting it fixed, just replace. Merry Christmas.
@muhendisabi16972 жыл бұрын
l could not find amp class info. Are you sure about this amp ab class?
@nc34192 жыл бұрын
@@muhendisabi1697 I did a quick look and while it doesnt appear to state which class, the weight given is 17 lbs. Presuming it isnt shipping weight, I'd say its' class AB. Keep in mind this is a very inexpensive amp which went from just under a hundred to doubling in price. Resale will be dismal, but alot of amps, good or bad unless they have hi end reputation will be low. I've never been a fan of Sony amps and the cheap ones in the past have sounded like $&!#. My recommendation is for absolute budget is to either but used yard sale/flea market, etc., or for new, a class D Aiyima A07. There are a few amps, some with dac under $200, mainly class D. If you want a good amp that will keep you happy with many even more expensive speakers and don't need super load music, one that performs exceedingly well at low to moderate volumes, I recommend and use a Keces E40 (measured 34 watts/61 watts at 8/4 ohms respectively and is stated to output bursts up to 15 amps). The Sony states 100 W at 8 Ohms / 1 kHz / 1% THD. If they used the full frequency range I doubt it would put out even 40 watts at 8 ohms and lucky to be able to put out even half the amps. It's just a cheap amp that sounds good enough for the budget with cheaper speakers, IMO. So, cheap, buy used or a small class D. If you want to jump into more an audiophile territory, the Keces e40 can still be had for $630, maybe around $400 used if you can find one. The only drawback is there is no returns. See the reviews online, both video and written to determine if would fit your needs. The Keces holds up well to and I think is even better than Rega offerings for my purposes and may have better build quality (Made in Taiwan and by people that know how to build a solid power stage). It has a good phono stage, a usb input (but I use an external dac) and uses quality components and connectors. Compared to my Hegel h160 it sounds nearly and I mean very close to it at moderate volumes and even volumes that have neighbors banging on my door. Unless you're going to spend a grand or more, and don't listen to rock concert levels, that's my choice. Check out swap shops too for cheap amps, you may find the Sony or a yamaha there too. But why not go for an amp that should last for decades and be good enough to drive many speakers up to 2 grand very well indeed, unless it is so hard to drive, then get a hegel or some other monster amp that sounds great. BTW, Keces makes a quality monster amp too. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYe1Y6qNiLR9f6c Hope that helps.

Funny. I have that Sony coming Sunday. Replacing an older hand-me-down Onkyo integrated unit, but may end up at a child’s house with the Sony speakers.

Hey Randy I’m still here and enjoying every video. I haven’t haya chance to comment though. I wanted to ask you about Micca speakers since the are in our budget range. Are they worth being in the cheapaudioman militia? 😂 What’s your take?
@cheapaudioman4 жыл бұрын
The only experience I have the Micca's were they the ones for about $80. Not the ones at $150. I thought they sounded great on the mids and top but lacking on the bass. The RB42's (maybe that's the one) has a much bigger enclosure and a better crossover and probably goes much lower. I just have any experience with it. I'm sure they're awesome. You can always try and return. Zeos loves them and he's very credible obviously.
@quiles264 жыл бұрын
I have the RB42’s cause I saw many videos on people going crazy on them but I haven’t had a chance to really listen to them by themselves.

It's called a Sony DH 190 for a reason. You get a great system for $190 👍🏼 I run my old Boston CR9 through it and it's really brilliant.

I know I’ve asked questions about this before but this is a tiny bit different, I have four, JBLA 130 speakers in my garage, my den on 2805 receiver is not doing what I think it should be doing, what do you recommend to listen to FM radio and stream music on all the speakers? Thank you for your awesome awesome awesome knowledge

Hey man! Great video. Did you try the headphones out on this? I'm looking at running some Philips X2HR off them and wondering if these would push a good sound out. Or at least better than a smartphone or PC sound card. Cheers!

Great channel. I have two questions that I hope you can help me with. First, would there really be a noticeable difference in sound quality between this receiver (Sony STR-DH190) and an integrated receiver like the Cambridge AXR85 or AXR100? Second, can an 8 ohm receiver like this one safely drive 6 ohm speakers? Thank you.
@bigmsound3 жыл бұрын
Sure, this receiver can safely drive 6 Ohm speakers. I always use the Sony SS-CS5 speakers on this receiver and they are of 6 Ohms impedance. There is an impedance selector on the remote control (either 8 or 6 ohms) which is accessible through the Amp Menu button and the round -o- button and selectable by pressing the up or down arrow buttons above and below the round -o- button. Never any problems with 6 ohm speakers on this unit. No "Overheat" or "Protection" shutdowns or any Magic Smoke from this receiver.

Randy, I would never consider buying a cheap Sony receiver prior to watching your review. I never liked the sound of anything Sony, but Pioneer isn't making any two channel $100 receivers. Thanks for the review and Merry Christmas.

Hey Randy, I happen to have that amp and got the cs5's today. After watching your reviews and comparison videos i took the chance on them. Wow they are "that good" as you would say. Very detailed and the bass is good enough. I am glad I stumbled on your channel good stuff. For your sound tests may I suggest a Canadian band The Tragically Hip Album- Road Apples Track- Fiddlers Green The Hip are a national treasure up her in Canada. Enjoy, and thanks for the insight it was very helpful.

What about FM reception. Understanding that location from stations and location in the home makes a big difference how does it compare to other receivers?

Depressing comparing prices discussed in this video to prices today. Those Sony speakers are up from $75 to $175. Best buy has a used set for 138 right now.. and that receiver is now $200.

Hi I just bought a secondhand STR DE 197 ( which still looks pristine) and coupled it with my old tannoy Pbm 6.5 ii speakers, already sounding great. But what budget option would you recommend instead of the tannoy’s and what do you think about the receiver?

I recently had my 80's Cerwin-Vega speakers redone. However, the guy installed 4 ohm woofers. Can I use them with this Sony receiver or am I stuck? I would love to give the shop an angry Yelp review but so far i'm not like that. Thanks Randy!

@jamesk74334 жыл бұрын
the chinese class d mini amps are noticeably not as good sounding as class AB. The mini class D's sound tinny, grainy and seems to have a gap in the midrange. These sony's with a external DAC or signal booster makes these sony amps come alive and gives the low end bass boost that it lacks without a external DAC.
@asonofliberty97373 жыл бұрын
I don't plan on using a computer or cd player with this amp. Just spotify over Bluetooth (which sounds pretty good as is) and lps. Would you still recommend a dac however, like the Schiit Modi to run my spotify from Android? Thank's for keeping it real Randy

Some people think that you could just put in any CD and if you don't have to mess with the EQ and you have a great unit...then all CDs were created equal not all bands record the same not all bands use the same EQing and compression and mastering ... So yes I do need to tweak things from time to time but you know what it's worth it because I saved many a dime that I didn't even have to spend on something that supposedly everything sounds good on. I don't use the receiver's volume or any of the cheap two little knobs or anything I use the remote cuz the remote rocks the Sony DVD remote seems to be a little iffy when it comes to ejecting the CD DVD... But hey for 44 bucks to run DVDs and CDs and sound pretty damn good when you can't find a actual CD player and that price range that just plays CDs.... This is the setup to go with for us that are on a budget... And also love music. All those pure audio files that like to pick things apart and be so judgmental but yet have two three grand to spin on every component will good for them... That's not our reality. It's kind of like only having three guitars that two of them barely work here and there have some issues and yet you can record three to four hundred songs of them it comes down to making the most out of what you have and what you can afford. Well other people are saving up to buy their miracle high in totally expensive stereo and not being able to enjoy anything they're missing out cuz you can enjoy a whole bunch of goodies with this setup right here.

I upgraded my AT LP60 with Edifier BT1700s active speakers to an AT LP3, this receiver and a pair of Q Audio 3020i's. A few audio experienced Redditors had advised me to consider switching to passive speakers, focusing more on speaker choice than amp in terms of the biggest possible leap on my relatively tight budget. After a little settling in, I can say that the difference is night and day. The depth and clarity I'm getting now on good quality vinyl is incredible.

Hi. I have this receiver and I connected a pair of Tannoy DC-6/8ohms (10.5ohms measured with multimeter) to the A speakers and a pair of Bose 2.1 acoustimass also at 8ohms to the B speakers and select 6ohms on the receiver settings. Do you think the resulted 4.5ohms/speaker( instead of a minimum 6 ohms/speaker) will damage the amp? Thanks🙋

Richard. This Receiver doesn't have a DAC in it so you'd need to hook up your bluray player and tv into a DAC and then run the DAC into the Sony.
