I really appreciate TCSTV using the camera they are reviewing to shoot the review. I think all professional reviewers should adopt such approach. Would be nice if they could get two review units instead of one so we can still see Jordan and Chris handling the camera in the footage though.

TC That's something I struggle with. If we can get two cameras (as we did for the upcoming A7R II episode) we'll always do this. However, using a camera I'm familiar with like the FS7, GH4 or A7S allows me to shoot and grade episodes faster, so you all get more content. It's a balancing act. Jordan @ TCSTV

A balancing act indeed. Thanks for going the extra mile. Personally I think it is well worth it give viewers a general idea about the sort of result they can achieve with the review unit. However, if time is of the essence, I reckon most people would be more than happy with an episode shot on something like the FS7, juxtaposing with sample footage from the review unit. Great work!

Great review guys. I bought my copy of the RX10mk2 on August 10th to serve as a backup to the A7Rmk2. It also served as a "C" camera for a commercial filmed in Argentina where it was primarily mounted onto a Ronin M. Turned out to be a great video camera and the AF for video is quite reliable to leave it on when mounted on a Ronin M (hard to manual focus when it's on the rig, even with a monitor). A few notes: - The built-in ND filter is electronic and I do notice a slight increase in noise, especially in the shadows when it's turned on and shooting with S-Log2. I remedied this by attaching an actual ND filter. - Rolling shutter is noticeable and the Active mode of the Steadyshot OIS system cannot be enabled when recording in 4k at 100mbps. As a result, it's not a great hand held 4k video camera. - Due to the size and shape of the RX10 mk2, it cannot balance well on a pistol grip gimbal stabilizer system. I tried mounting it to a Nebula 4000 and a Came-TV Single with no success. Though, a two-handed stabilizer like the Ronin M and Movi M5 work well with it. Plus when you zoom to telephoto, these stabilizers can adjust for the change in balance without issue.

Everything I see Jordan and Chris in the same frame I just watch in glee as Jordan gets absolutely frustrated as Chris repeatedly interrupts him. Sure Chris is articulate and he has a great on TV personality but Jordan does great reviews on video I really like his portion and I wish we'd see more of that. I know this isn't the first comment for this, we all know Chris loves talking albeit being very good at it. But for Christ's sakes Chris let Jordan talk for we can all see it, he has tons to say, all very informative and excellent learning value so let's hear more of him.

+MySchizo Buddy Not necessarily. In my experience the iso performance is much better on the rx10 II, the slow motion as well, it is not even a competition here. And without the an external recorder on the gh4, the 4k video quality comes shockingly close.

Great review. I'm almost tempted to get one of these! We work with an A6000 now, and it's great for stills and for video too for the type of video work we do. We are almost going to go in for a second A6000 to replace our older NEX F3, just to have that secondary camera when we are on location shoots. But, I'm very tempted by some of the video features on this RX10ii model, like the 4K recording and high frame rate shooting. We would love to get some slow-motion shots, and the fact that it can still get 1080p recording at 240fps is awesome. One question though: I have read that this has a 62mm thread at the front of the lens, would you say that it would be possible to attach a cheap wide-angle adapter that just screws on to this? That built in lens is nice but would like some options, even if its just inexpensive screw-on adapters. (which is why we like the E-mount lens cameras, expands our options).

I did not quite catch it: did you record audio for the whole episode through an add-on XLR adapter and a shotgun mic, or did you record it through the built-in mic? Also, some have commented on less than stellar image stabilizer in video mode, especially in 4K mode. Could you share your opinion on that? Would be nice to compare it to the Canon G3X, although the only selling feature of the Canon seem to be the 24-600 lens.

How slow does the fly by wire manual focusing get? Any worse than it is on my Sony/Zeiss FE 55mm f/1.8? Any slower than it is on that lens and it would be unusable.

I'm sorry guys, I don't understand - wouldn't the improved shadow noise (less noise) mean the camera has better dynamic range? You bring it up at 2:45 or so.

Sean Tomlinson Not really more dynamic range but as I state more usable range. They both capture the same amount of detail in the shadows and highlight areas but with the original RX10 capturing it is one thing but if after you push the shadows everything looks noisy as hell well you might as well just crush them black. The RX10mk2 was able to boost shadow areas without terrible consequences and so I would feel comfortable shooting into darker areas with the mk2 whereas with the mk1 I would simply resign myself to losing the shadows. If you are making action films something like this definitely works better, otherwise for normal film making DSLR and prime lens and all other options in lenses make more sense. This is somewhat an alternate camera to get the slow mo shots and other shots that DSLR can't take.

I am going travelling for 5 months and i currently have a Canon 1000D from 2008. I want to get a new camera that has both video and still capabilities that is more compact in size and weight than my current camera but that i can still manipulate and do things that my SLR camera can. Lower production value in this video particularly with the lack of B roll; but it makes up for it with decent info and discussion on who the camera is for. And a longer videography review too!

That soft focus on the punch in really seems to be broken. Seemed to affect many of the 4k shots in practise. Only other note is I prefer your GH4 footage to this. The colours, especially skin tones, and the overall image detail - once moved to youtube looks better from the GH4. The 1080 video at end looked good though.

Tyler Breeden That was a comment on the observation made in the video. I don't have the RX10, just the GH4. On the GH4 you get focus peaking on punch in as well as normal view but the whole thing only works before pressing the record button, not during a shot. Yes one normally uses either AF or manual punch in prior to a shot. Why punch in? 4k is huge, it's tricky to nail the focus or check the focus on a very little monitor screen without punch in.

Does youtube allocate bandwidth depending on view count? Experiencing very slow downloads here, whereas most 4k vids play pretty well (on 50 Mbps down)...just checked with speedtest.net, 49 Mbps down.....using the 2160p setting on an UHD display....slideshow.....

И вообще считаю фотоаппараты Sony лучшими за последние минимум 5 лет. И никакие устаревшие Canon и им подобные зеркалки не дают таких возможностей фотографу как фото камеры Sony. Причем очень удобное меню безграничных возможностей получить прекрасную фотографию (именно фотографию, а не изображение) без использования компьютерных приложений типа фотошоп. Ну а если так хочется поддержать традицию и прочувствовать сам процесс рождения фотографии, пожалуйста формат RAW и все к нему приложения прямо с камерой. Ну конечно и кинематографическое видео, да еще и с возможностью сразу же применять разные режимы. И как бы не ругали "профи" и не игнорировали фото технику Sony им не остановить прогресс.

ourtvchannel If you don't need the longer battery life and lack of 29 minute cutoff the AX100 offers, I'd recommend going with the RX10 II. Jordan @ TCSTV

Usually I shoot weddings and I need to know low light performance of RX10 II 'cause Churches sometimes are really dark and I use a small led light. I think you should do all your reviews like this! (Using the camera you're reviewing - not on holiday :)) Was certainly useful to see some focus issues in the review where we never usually see that with your other reviews - speaks a lot about how hard gaining focus would be in practice. Also notice some jumping around with the colour - very magenta cast in a few shots and warm in others - was the camera on auto white balance?
