You are the best reviewer on KZbin by a far margin. Just the relevant content, with a dash of subtle humour. Clean editing to deliver the required content in the most efficient use of time. No unnecessary music effects or long Interludes of saying nothing or digressing or wandering off into outer space. It's always a joy to watch your content. Much appreciated.

I own a Canon 5D MIII and a 7D MII and bought the Sony RX10 Mark IV just for wildlife photography. I really love this camera and for this price it gets almost the same quality as its big brothers full frame camera's. The burst rate of 24/sec is fantastic and gives you the exact picture you always wanted. By the way.. very good video review you did on the Sony RX10 IV! I strongly recommend this camera.

There was so much information packed into the 25 minute review that it made my head spin. Details came whizzing by at a rapid rate, making it impossible to absorb everything. This is the de facto video for anyone who doesn't naturally have an affinity toward understanding camera set-up/settings. It's a bit much to "take in" on one sitting, but after a few runs through, with camera in hand, it starts to make sense! I hope to use the RX-0 primarily for photographing (sea) birds and this guide will help me put the necessary settings on to the Fn keys with that in mind. Thank you Maarten for a brilliant video! Dear old man with fantastic eyes and eyebrows 😊, I did joined your channel and I do believe the Camera manufacturing teams are examining these videos closer than we think, but instead of ranting over manu details and minor defects, can we please raise the bigger more important issues of asking for a solid aps-c sensor, a bigger battry and a uhd ii sd card so Sony can deserve the money this model is priced. Because no enough complaints about this features Sony has rx 10 and rx 100 serious with the same old 1 inche sensor even though the rx 10 serious have a dslr Wight and shape to them still minimal in thier cores !! Please do consider raising the level of demand, I understand that not so many competition are coming even close to what Sony is doing. Great review. I have been using the camera the past 2 weeks and find that it does have great versatility. One area of confusion is in shooting close-ups I was in an aquarium and had challenges figuring out the best configuration to get close shots at different focal lengths. While it is true that the closest focus is at the widest angle setting, this often doesn't work in various settings and did not work at the aquarium. The close focus keeps changing based on the focal length used and did not seem to be very intuitive. Perhaps you can add clarifications on that to your excellent series. The camera is a game changer for sure and I have found it has done a better job on wide angle shots than my canon equipment due to the better area of sharp focus due to the smaller sensor.
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
I appreciate the kind words, thanks. Pretty sure I mentioned and demonstrated that when fully zoomed in the closest distance is 70cm. However, you're correct, in practice, it's a bit of a challenge to get the focal length right when shooting close.

@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
I'm great, thanks for asking, and thanks for your kind words. I'd take the A6500, because of it's extensive feature set, fast focus, picture profiles and the ability to use just about any lens I want.

Thank you for the excellent review. I'm deciding between the Mark ii and Mark iv because of the Mark ii's constant 2.8 lens and built in ND filters. I'm both an amateur photographer and videographer. Don't really need to extra zoom and appreciate the slightly lower weight of the Mark ii. Just worried that with all the changes that Sony has come out with the focus, buffer, image and video quality in the Mark iv that it will blow away the Mark ii. Does anyone have a comment?
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
I appreciate the kind words. The improvements are not dramatic enough to cause me to recommend the IV over the II based on those issues - however, they are all considerations that can't be dismissed. If the extra zoom and the lower weight are factors for you, then that is a perfectly sound decision.

Thank you for the detailed reviews. The information is very helpful. I have been shooting with a Canon 70D for a few years and use it with a Sigma 150-500mm lens for wildlife photography. Currently I need a lightweight alternative that is less obtrusive for capturing video and stills to share on social media. I've been considering all of my options: Keep doing what I'm doing with a backache; Buy a bridge camera either this SONY or a LUMIX FZ300; or Buy a mirrorless with a new lens. I like the idea of a bridge camera because they are small and versatile. Do you think this camera or a Lumix can produce adequate results? OR is it better to buy a mirrorless, adapt my current lens and find a shorter (300 mm) micro 4/3?
@MaartenHeilbron4 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, this camera would provide excellent results for social media post (and more). I have not reviewed the FZ300.

great review as always maartini. i am non professional. i am choosing a camera mainly for stills. i shoot landscape, and birds wildlife also. use it mainly for travel. i had difficulty in choosing between a 6500 and fuji Xt2. also other concern is bird photography where i would require altest more than 400mm fl. here the large telephoto interchangeable lenses become heavy and costly. what should i do. should i go for RX10 4 for birds and a6500/xt2 for other things. your advice will be greatly appreciated
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. The value of the RX10 IV is clearly in the lens - which is one of the best size/weight/price ratios for a long lens in the market. I'm not sure why you would not consider it for travel as well? I think it's an extremely versatile and capable camera. Not that I wouldn't also recommend either or both the A6500 and the X-T2 - but adding lenses to those will increase the price and weight dramatically.

Excellent review. I need a bridge camera because I can't afford both a good 4K camcorder and a good stills camera. Other than the long zoom would the RX10 II (I watched your review) still be considered a good bridge camera or how about the Panasonic FZ2500? The RX10 II and the FZ2500 are the same price in Feb 2019. Thanks for your in depth reviews.

I can't judge your need for quality, but I have an 80x60cm print from a one inch sensor (an older Sony RX100) taken in low light that looks pretty spectacular from here.
@HomesickMac6 жыл бұрын
Oh Maarten, that was an extensive one, as usual, but right now, I really listened to every little aspect because I was strongly considering getting this camera. It would throw me into new costs, definitely. I'm in the process of getting a Sony for my stills photography and the new A7III seemed like a great choice. My two Lumix cameras (FZ2000 & GX8) for video and Sony for stills. I'd do portraits and landscape with a new stills camera and a full frame was on my list for a loooong time. Then, when the real research was done, some aspects of the A7III weren't that fantastic any more (I'm considering getting a used A7RIII because of the 42MP sensor) although the video is great, according to many, better than on the A7RIII. I'd love to be able to go Sony all the way because I just love the edge of it's colors and the feel in the hand. Hey, I'm one of those who don't mind the menus at all... I still enjoy shooting with my A5100. If Sony had a no-limit video on the RX10 IV I'd go for it in a second. An RX10 IV + used A6500, then I could decide later on if I'm to get the A7III or the A7RIII. With the Photokina ahead in September, who knows, Sony might be giving us a A7RIV or a sensor updated A7SIII (but they wouldn't go from 12MP to 42MP, I guess the 24MP is to expect). I admit that this sounds like a GAS because my two Lumix cameras are just as good as when I bought them and they shoot great video, the GX8 being also quite good for stills. But going with one brand is making the whole chain easier to cope with. All from the lenses to the editing, color grading etc, would be smoother. Thanks again for a great video. Oh, and for the other shorter one describing the video settings for the RX IV!

Hi Maarten,... will you be doing a video on the best settings for recording video on the rx10m4? I want to use my RX10 MK4 to video some model airplanes in flight and in 1080p im struggling with understanding all the different focus modes / options available as per the help guide. What i want to achieve is to be able to manually turn the lens zoom ring while viewing my subject ( ie a model airplane in flight ) via the viewfinder and maintain focus as i zoom in and out to keep the model in shot. These models move at different speeds in flight so its important to keep them both in frame and in focus. i suppose its kinda similar to a bird in flight so im hoping you can help.

Maarten, thank you for the video. I recently purchased this camera and make use of it for interior photography using the playmemories app on my iPad. For some reason, sometimes I can control the aperture but other times I can't. Even though the dial is on manual the app seems to allow the adjustments when it decides to do so. Have you come across a similar issue?
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
I haven't, but maybe I have not experimented enough. In general these remote control apps tend to be slightly flakey - my impression is that Sony's, which has been around for a while is a little more stable than average.
@zacualpeno1007 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your response. So far I have been very well pleased with the camera. Very good sharpness, better than expected dynamic range. The macro capabilities are amazing. The autofocus on fast moving items has been very impressive. All in all , if I didn´t know any better I would not realize this is a one inch sensor unless I began pushing it to its limits. The sentiment is the same with the menu, but once I figured out what I want and assign things to the function buttons I´m good to go. Just like you mentioned on the video this one can do a lot and well they need people like you to improve the interface and make it user friendly.
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
I agree - there's a lot to like in this package. One of the comments that didn't make it into the final was my reference to a photowalk I attended with Photoshop guru Katrin Eismann - her camera of choice is/was the RX10 III - for all the reasons you mention.
@zacualpeno1007 жыл бұрын
I went out today shooting with it and I´m liking it more and more every time I use it. If anything, I really hope they add back again the play memories app for using the time-lapse function. I have used that quite often with my other Sony cameras and still cannot wrap my ahead around the fact that they didn´t include it or at least an intervalometer for creating time-lapses.

I have no idea why it's not included. I've seen comments online to suggest they may be adding it in a firmware update.

As always, a beautiful, very useful and "concentrated" review, as all quality reviews should be! Thank you, Maarten for your large covering of all aspects of the camera usage! Your previous review of RX10 M3 convinced me to buy it, now I upgraded to RX10 M4, and I am not regret it! (Even I have a problem with planeity of the image at 24mm setting in M4). By the way, I feel no improvements in image quality over M3, but the addition of the touch screen, touch focus (and the phase detection) are useful for me. Has the M4 PD AF in video? Best review I've seen of this camera, thank you. Should I worry that most of what you discussed was over my head? I'm upgrading from a Lumix D70 to this camera, at least that is the plan. I primarily photograph birds (from forest to ocean). In your opinion, is this one of my better choices? Have any equivalent cameras I should be looking at for this purpose? The AF, 600mm lens, slo-mo, weight, and 24fps is what draws me to this all in one camera. Thank you so much for your help.

Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. Don't worry. This is a good choice for birding - the 600mm provides excellent reach, and the other factors increase its usefulness.There is a similar Nikon model, but I haven't had the opportunity to review it.

My final question @ least that I can think of. Have you ran into any smearing or noise issues with this camera & if so what is recommended (turning specific settings on or off) in preserving the most detail with this camera?
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
That will depend on the situation. There are many settings to adjust to compensate for various shooting scenarios, you'll have to experiment to find the best one for your situation, and each situation will be different. I didn't have any smearing or noise issues while I was reviewing.

Dear Maarten, I am an admirer of your reviews, precise and to the point always. Thank you so much for your consistently honest views. Now, I need a help: I like the gear on the basis of your review. However, I am more keen to its predecessor RX10 II because I am more okay with 24-200 mm while 24-600 seems kinda awkward to me. Could you please tell what exactly important features I will be missing in Sony RX10II? BTW, the issues I consider in buying a stuff are [a] fast focusing capabilities, [b] low light performance and noise, and [c] battery life. Thanks in advance for your response.
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. You will miss no important features. Sony updated some aspects of picture profiles used for video recording, some focus capabilities and added exposure metering modes. While these improvements make the RX10 IV a better camera, unless you want the lens capabilities, you should be more than satisfied with the RX10 II.

Thank you +Maarten Heilbron, another excellent review. Now that you have had a chance to use and review this camera how do you feel it stacks up against the Panasonic FZ2000/2500 for still photography? I don't have any use for the video features of either camera.
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
Thanks kindly, appreciated. There's barely any need to consider - the RX10 IV, from the sensor to the lens is a superior camera - although I do love some of Panasonic's technology like post focus, they're poorly served on the FZ series.
@brianmiller9217 жыл бұрын
Again thank you. I too like the post-focus as well as the 3 built-in ND filters but it sounds like it may be time to move on. Perhaps I will wait until next year and see if Panasonic makes some improvements to compete with the Sony. My dream would be a Fuji competitor with the RX10 IV. I would love to have the film simulation modes in camera.

You could consider one of Panasonics micro four-thirds models, with a larger sensor they provide better quality.

You can only use the Video mode to do video. If you have the mode dial in S or A you will get a message stating it is invalid in that mode when you push the video button. If you have 4k selected or 120p selected in your video mode setting and go back to photo mode you are stuck in standard steady shot and have to go back and change your video settings to be able to use active or active intelligent stabilization in photo mode. That is a pain in the ass if you are shooting video and stills in the same shoot because you need the advanced stabilization beyond 300 mm.
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what setting your camera has that's preventing you from recording video in A or S mode - works fine for me in HD and 4K. I have a long list of complaints I could have added to the rant about the menu and exclusions - the steady shot problem you mention is one.

Hi Maarten I have just watched this review with the idea of possibly purchasing this camera but having watched it I think you have saved me from making an expensive mistake, ie it's not for me. You ask why we can't have unlimited video recording instead of a 30 minute limit, well in the UK this is purely because if Sony give the camera unlimited recording time it attracts a higher level of import duty because it is considered a video camcorder not a camera. Best wishes Vic.

My new RX10 IV will be delivered on Tuesday. I tried out the Nikon P1000, and while it did okay with good lighting, it was just too cumbersome to manage. Additionally, focusing on certain subjects proved annoying at times, as it took an inordinate amount of time hunting for proper focus-missed some great shots! But this Sony, while significantly more expensive than the Nikon, or other bridge cameras, seems to hit the sweet spot for me. Gone are the days when carrying a large, heavy camera bag full of camera lenses to accompany my Canon 5D, as my joints and lower back are no longer able to accommodate the extra weight-at least for an all-day hike. And while I’m not expecting to achieve the same incredible detail of the full-frame Canon, my eyesight also isn’t what it used to be. So I think the Sony will be just fine for taking along on our adventures...not to mention, my first grandchild will be born in early October. Another excellent review-well laid out and easy to follow. Oh, and I just subscribed! Thank you again for helping me with my purchase decision! You’re the best!!

Hi , Thanks for the review. Years and months after how do you compare this camera with other rivals in the same 1"-20MP Sensor - Bridge/Superzoom? Can you make a review comparing features, video and stills quality for: - Canon Powershot G3 X (it's a mark II is coming?) - Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 mark II / Leica V-Lux 5 - Panasonic Lumix FZ2000/2500 (3000/3500 soon?) - Sony RX10 Mark IV (Mark V soon?) Do you know if other companies like Nikon will upgrade their offer with cameras in the same range? Like a Nikon Coolpix CX (1" sensor), or a coolpix B800 CX sensor? Other companies see to have give up for this segment : Fuji, Pentax, Olympus... Thanks.

Hi Maarten, I'm about to take a 3 month motorcycle trip to South America. I have a RX100iv, A7Rii and iPhone X. One thing I hate is carrying around tons of lenses and cameras. On a bike, you have no time to fuss and muss with lenses and very little space and time to bring out cameras. When you are going to remote villages -- again, time is limited. I have used all my RX100's often over the years. Used my A7R cameras but lenses like I said have always been an issue since I am always on the move. I am looking at the RX10iv as an alternative to the A7Rii. My biggest fear is low light -- night time or dusk use. What are your thoughts there? I would otherwise take a A7rii with a 35/2.8 and a 55/1.8 and chose each day which to bring out along with RX100v.
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
While I like everything about the RX10 IV, I would hesitate to recommend it for low light - the A7RII clearly offers better, particularly with those lenses. However, you won't have the 25x zoom, or the versatility that offers.
@Coldgecko7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. So the next question is... How would you compare the RX10 IV to the A7Rii (with my lenses in 100-400 ISO situations?). I am hoping for the magic solution -- long lens convenience vs low light and large sensor.
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
always my pleasure - I'll assume it's not a trick question - clearly a one inch sensor, which is "good enough" (and I have 24x36in prints on my wall to show for it), is not a full frame. Sadly, there are no magic solutions - even if Criss Angel is coming along for the rid.
@stefpix6 жыл бұрын
I went to Mexico and I carried 2 A6000 with 2 primes and 16-70, and the RX10 III. i'd choose each day or night what to bring. I am still on the fence with the RX10 series/ The III sometimes has a hard time focusing past 150mm equivalent. For portraits of people the A6X00 with a prime like the Sigma or Sony E mount are better. I'd consider the A6000 or A6300 to take along with the Sigma 16mm and or just the 30mm. lighter and smaller than the A7Rii. I like the RX10III but I do not love it. It is lighter and cheaper than a zoom to 400 or 600mm and if you go on a trip you may want to photograph wild animals or distant things. I think Sony improved the AF in the IV over the III.

I enjoyed watching your detailed review. Given its versatility, range and beautiful lens, and the bang for the buck, I was considering purchasing this particular camera for bird and general photography. However, after examination I feel it might be a bit too complicated for taste - though I’d probably be able to get used to that, as you mentioned in another reply you can adjust many of the settings once and leave them alone. You also mentioned in a further reply that it's in need of an update as its getting old. That kind of puts me off a bit. I’d buy the thing and then Sony would likely release a newer version. Another on my list was the Panasonic G9, but that’s getting on as well, though the M4/3 range seems to have the best range of lenses at relatively affordable prices. The Sony a6600 was another, but the lens range on offer is fairly limited. Fuji seems a bit expensive and according to Ken Rockwell their cameras are mainly good for people shots. I don’t really believe that but its just worth a mention. Olympus is good, but there’s no guarantee it’ll be operating in the long term or updating their technology as the company was taken over by JIP. I like the Nikons but the telephoto lenses are very expensive. It seems to me that to get a sports capable camera that takes good quality pictures (that's important to me as I'd like to printmy best shots) prices start at $2000AUD and I can live with that, but when it’s getting up to 3-4k things are way out of my price range and I couldn’t in good conscience spend that on a rig. As a non-professional I just can’t justify it. I know I’m suffering from information overload, curse the internet. All these things considered I still like the RX10. Sorry for the long rant. Any suggestions - for a camera that is?
@MaartenHeilbron2 жыл бұрын
The fact that it's dated doesn't mean that it's any less capable than when it was new - it just seems time for Sony to include some of the features they've included in other recent models. As for lenses - there is no better mirrorless selection, from Sony and from third parties - than those available for the e-mount (like the A6600). After reading all of your thoughts - and I agree that information overload is a problem, particularly when not all the impressions you have are valid - but if it's time to make a decision, the RX10-IV remains an excellent choice until Sony releases an update, and I have no predictions for that.

I forgot one question to ask. Is there a lot of jitter on average while zooming in while in movie mode? ps: Why can’t Sony have an optional manual zoom implemented in bridge cameras like the Olympus 40-150mm Pro instead of the SLOW electric zoom?

Not sure what you mean by jitter in this context. It zooms smoothly, although not as organically as I'd like. There are two speeds available for the zoom.

Great review. I currently own a Canon 6D and a couple of lenses. I sold my 24-70 f2.8 for a longer 24-105 f4 (I preferred the speed of the 24-70 though). I also have the cheap 50mm f1.8, which gets great results....sometimes. Anyway, I not a professional photographer, but have done a few weddings and some mountain bike shoots, but I mainly use the camera for holidays and family. I'm getting fed up lugging the 6D and the rest of the gear about and thought that the RX10 iv may be the answer. My biggest question is the quality of the images indoors. Most sample images I've found are of wildlife with a long focal length. I really like the idea of the face detect and eye focus, as when taking photos of my child, I always struggle with focusing as they seem to move about so quickly. I suppose the real question is, would I be 'downgrading' by getting an RX10 iv form my 6 year old Canon 6D? I know the image quality of the 6D paired with Canon's L glass is going to be superior to the Sony, but I would think you would be getting a lot more 'keepers' with the Sony. Also, I like the idea of not having to change lenses. I've seen a few reviews of the Sony that say a nice shallow depth of field is achievable, you just have to work a little harder than you would with a full frame camera. Any thoughts? Thanks Craig
@MaartenHeilbron5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words, appreciated. I have the 24-105 - that is a great lens. I''d get the RX10iv and see how it works out for you - I think you'll be pleased. It will do the kinds of things that you're expecting. Of course, it is a downgrade in sensor size (but not resolution) and that is a compromise you'll have to determine in practice using your judgement. Yes, a shallow depth of field is achievable, no, it's not that difficult, particularly as the focal length goes over 100.
@portreathbeach5 жыл бұрын
@@MaartenHeilbron thanks for the reply. I can't afford to keep the 6D and lenses and also buy the RX10, I guess I was hoping for an all-in-one solution. As long as the RX10 iv takes still images indoors without too much noise, I guess it will be OK. The smaller sensor doesn't really bother me too much, as the 1 inch sensor on the new DJI Mavic Pro is amazing, and I'm guessing the Sony's sensor is better again. Is there a mark 5 on the way?
