My Gosh!! Such a great video!! It can be really frustrating being a Sony bridge camera owner, because they are terrible at writing manuals and giving such instructional videos. As someone who had purchased your first book on the version 1 of this same camera, I will be looking to buy this one too. I took it to Italy for a 2 week trip this summer, in lieu of my Nikon D810, because I wanted a better "all in one" solution that did 4K video too. The camera was great, although I ended up having to shoot the entire trip in manual mode, partly because the camera is so hard to fully understand and automate. Your book would have helped tremendously. Thanks very much.

Why does the external monitor not display across the full screen? I have just bought a 5.5" monitor for my RX10 iii, and it only displays a 4.25" window in the centre of the screen. Why is that?

It's hard to say why that is happening. I would suggest that you check the HDMI Settings menu option on the camera, and also check the settings on the external monitor to see if some setting is causing that to happen.

Can you be more specific about the problem? Do you mean no sound is recorded when recording a video? If so, what shooting mode are you using? Are any special settings in use?

I purchased your book "Getting the Most from Sony's Advanced Digital Camera". Thank you! I have read it cover to cover, highlighting parts that were particularly relevant for my camera usage. I've taken notes and made a list of pages I want to go out and try in the field. I could never have figured out the best use of this camera without that book. I'm really having a challenge with MACRO. Would you please do a video of how to take MACRO shots (actually close-up shots) with the SONY RX10 III. I'm really frustrated with trying to focus and get closer to the subject. Thank you!

If possible, put the camera on a solid tripod and use manual focus, along with MF Assist or the Focus Magnifier option and focus peaking, with the lens at its wide-angle setting. You may want to close down the aperture to a narrow setting to increase the depth of field.

You might be able to find one that fits, but I don't recommend using one, because the lens is not built to withstand the extra weight of an accessory of that sort. It probably would not be a good idea to use one.

I've been reading about the SONY RX10 IV and would like to hear your recommendation. Is it worth trading up to get that multi phase focus and the better tracking? I am focus challenged. I find the RX10 III to be quite cumbersome, manageing the buttons to zoom in and then manually sharpen the focus, and then hit the button to zoom out. How about a video demonstrating using the Focus Magnifier vs. using the Range of Zoom Assist. It's quite challenging and yet essential.

Thanks for your comments. In my opinion, yes, it is worth upgrading to the RX10 IV for the improved focus performance and faster continuous shooting, along with a few other enhancements, especially if you may be taking photos of moving subjects such as birds or sports events. I will consider doing some more videos at some point, but probably not for a while.

Love your book on the RX10 iii. In Fig. A-16 you picture a threaded Cable Release Attached to the RTX10 iii. I am unable to find one online that says it fits this camera. Searched many sites. Bought one that hinted it might but it does not. Any suggestions?

I can't point you to a specific model that I can guarantee will fit with the RX10 III. The one I showed in the book is just one I had used in the past with other cameras, and I'm not sure where I got it -- possibly from a local camera store. Probably the best approach, if possible, is to go to a local camera store that sells cable releases and try them out until you find one that fits. Of course, it's not certain that it will fit, but it presumably can be returned if it doesn't work.

Yes, this camera can use Sony's PlayMemories Mobile app for remote control and file transfer. You also can download various other apps from Sony's site, to add or enhance camera features.

Is there any method to copy slides using the RX10 iii, since it does not have an interchangeable lens? Had a Nikon film SLR with slide copier but do not want to get back into interchangeable lenses for digital. Would appreciate any suggestions.

thank you for the video. I have a question: I have an RX10 M3 and have had it for over a year. suddenly the audio will not record on the camera while videoing. I can plug an external mic in and it does fine. Do you have any suggestions as where I can get some help on the settings (I have tried them all) because there are times when I do not have my external mic with me and would like to have audio. Also, if I need to send in for repair, where should I send it?

Make sure the openings for the built-in microphone, on top of the camera, are not somehow covered or blocked. Also, try the various audio-related settings, such as Audio Recording and Audio Recording Level. If that doesn't help, try the Settings Reset menu option. Also, try recording in Movie mode as well as other modes. If none of that works, contact Sony at esupport.sony.com to find out about sending it in for repair. Hello, in your book you you mentioned that the AC-PW20 is compatible with the RX10. When i use it however it says "incompatible battery". Any thoughts?

That adapter worked fine with my RX10 cameras, and Sony currently lists the adapter as compatible with all three RX10 models. My only thought is to make sure the one you purchased is the authentic Sony adapter. I have had problems with counterfeit Sony products purchased online, and that could be an issue.

VCT-VPR1: Remote seems to be OK. Is the Tripod OK for Rx10 III with extra Flash units or Microphones ? Can I have some response ?

I have never used that tripod, so I don't know. I took a quick look at Amazon.com, and there are many reviews and questions answered there. Some people say the tripod is flimsy, some say it can support 6 pounds (2.7 kg). I recommend that you do some more research, maybe at the Sony site and other sites, before deciding.

I don't know of a physical device that works out of the box with the RX10 III, but I haven't really searched for one. There are ways to do time-lapse shooting with the RX10 III. First, you can install Sony's Remote Camera Control software on a computer and connect the camera to the computer, then use the remote control function from the USB Connection menu on the camera. Also, you can install an app such as the Time Lapse app or the IntervalCam app (in the iTunes store), and control the camera that way. Also, there is a thread from the dpreview.com site that explains a way to install an intervalometer on a similar camera, that might work with the RX10 III if you are handy with soldering, etc.: www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3641449. I have not tried the wired option discussed at dpreview.com, and I'm not sure it would work with the RX10 III, but it may be worth a try. There may be other options to consider, but those are the ones I am aware of at the moment.

I downloaded IntervalCam. As far as I can tell, there are no instructions for using it. I can't figure out how to connect to my camera. Any suggestions?

Yes. First, set up the camera to connect to your phone using the Sony Remote Control Embedded app, which comes with the camera. This will include connecting the phone to the camera's Wi-Fi network using the Settings app on the phone. Then start the IntervalCam app and click on the upward-facing arrow to the left of the shutter button icon at the bottom of the screen. Then click on Select Camera Model, and select Sony Camera Remote, not the RX10 choice. Click on the dial icon at the bottom right of the app's screen to set up the interval for the time-lapse shooting. This setup worked for me.

Actually, it is not very hard to set up. It comes with everything you need to connect it to the camera, including one mike. If you want high quality sound, I think this kit is a good option, though it is expensive.
