As ever, a sound, rational and informative review. Whilst I am often in awe of the technical specs of most Sony cameras, I must admit that I wonder how much of a future cameras of this class have whoever makes them. I once used to have a 'pocket camera' with me all the time but today not so, the smartphone camera has probably taken over that role for most people. Although I haven't seen one, you mention that there is a "grip" of some kind that goes with it, that might make sense as all these type of cameras tend to have cluster f**k buttons on the back right hand side that you inevitably trip accidently !
@cameralabs6 жыл бұрын
Yep, there's an optional grip and third party ones too. And you're right about phones being good enough for many situations, which is why they have to pack loads of different tech into these premium compacts, and also charge a higher price for them.
@tubechap84246 жыл бұрын
The only real advantage of this camera over a phone is the zoom and for that you pay a lot more and even give up a few. For example you can connect a microphone to many phones.
@johnhaynes99106 жыл бұрын
You are right on that point. I must confess to being rather confused by a premium camera that includes short burst 4k and yet offers no external mike jack that doesn't make much sense to me given how crucial sound is to any film maker.
@DGBomber6 жыл бұрын
The perfect RX100 for me would be with a 24-100 f1.4-2.8, ND filter, touchscreen and the new viewfinder. I don't need a 200mm. They should think to make 2 models, a superzoom and a fast lens one.
@cameralabs6 жыл бұрын
I agree 100%. I want the old lens, but with the new viewfinder, screen, bluetooth etc.

@cameralabs6 жыл бұрын
You'd be looking at the larger superzoom models, like the RX10 series from Sony, and the FZ1000 / FZ2000 from Panasonic. They're more than a tad bigger though sadly.
@thomashill57686 жыл бұрын
Very impressive camera for the size but seems to be a swing and a miss for vlogging. Do you think manufacturers simply don't rate vlogging as enough of a market to cater for? Speaking of which have you had your hands on the Fuji XT100? I'd live to see you put that through its vlogging paces...
@cameralabs6 жыл бұрын
I haven't tested the X100T yet but I'm looking forward to doing it soon! As for vlogging, i think it's taken most manufacturers by surprise as most seem to always miss a feature or two which would have made a better camera for this task. They're coy about development cycles too, so feedback they receive today may not be actually implemented for a while.

Thanks for the video. Dang, So more money. No mic input, no ND filter like the previous version. How could Sony screw up such essential features. This is a neat camera. But they are doing their best to make it not a vlogging camera, which is the #1 reason its' talked about.

This new RX100M6 has IMO become the HX95. Sony had a great compact travel zoom range in the HX50/60/80/90 series and they have not updated the HX model in 2 years.

Gordon, thanks for the video. I'm really curious to know how low of a shutter speed the camera can be hand held at 24mm in low light. On my rx100 iv I'm safe around 1/10 but this new model appears to have improved steadyshot. I was hoping that since the wide end is now 2.8 instead of 1.8 it could be held at an even lower shower speed. Could you confirm? Thanks again.

Thanks a lot for the video Gordon. You are one of the very few KZbin photographers who give good, useful and detailed reviews. You've answered a lot of my questions for this little camera. Waiting for your detailed review for low light performance for both videos and stills. I've seen on internet some very soft and noisy samples as early as ISO 1000. Quite inferior quality given this is a $1,200 machine. Eager to know your comments on this.
@cameralabs6 жыл бұрын
Well the sensor is the same as the RX100 V, so while there may be some variations in the image processor, I would still say the Mark V results will be indicative of what you can expect from the new Mark VI. The only difference in low light is the fact the lens is one stop slower in the same 24-70 range, so the Mark VI will be using around double the ISO value..
@parisbase46396 жыл бұрын
Thank for the reply Gordon. Looking forward to more low light samples on your website. And please do post some real low light footage. I trust your judgement.

I was waiting for the canon G7X M3 to come but also entertained the buying the Panasonic LX10 and also looked at the RX100 V to replace my still very capable canon S95 from 2011. After so much sitting on the fence, I decided to buy the LX10 because $600 is the only ever amount of money I will shell out for a compact camera.The remaining $400 I will buy the GoPro 6 to replace my Olympus TG-300 from 2014. What an irony for Canon, that is Sony who releases even a MK 6 version to their product in this category.

What memory card do you recommend for the RX100 VI? Does it support UHS-II? Please advise. Thanks Gordon!
@cameralabs6 жыл бұрын
I don't believe it supports UHS II, so while that's disappointing for buffer clearing times, it does mean you can get away with something slower! Make sure it's SDXC compatible though. That said, if you're inserting the card into an UHS-II compatible reader, you will be able to exploit its speed for copying data from it, so it may still be worth doing.

the vlogging quality is quite terrible without a proper image stabilization like Canons without an ND filter I wonder how we shoot in bright daylight videos it's quite a shame Sony literally goes backwards I would rather it advances to 24-100 F2 lens not to mention the huge jump again in RX100, it prices way beyond most users willing to afford as a P&S

Believe it or not,my Sony RX100 M1 has faster Aperture than M6.IMHO,this is not worthwhile of upgrading.
@cameralabs6 жыл бұрын
All of the RX100's to date have brighter apertures because their lens ranges are smaller too. If you extend the zoom but keep the body small, you have to compromise on aperture. They're taking a gamble that is what people want, and Panasonic certainly sell a lot of TZ100 / ZS100 and TZ200 / ZS200 models which have even slower apertures. But for me, I still prefer the shorter and brighter range.
@techmaester6 жыл бұрын
I loved the RX100 I. After that, performance and reliability made me give up and move on to better models like the NEX-7, a6000, and Fujifilm X-T2 (cheaper than some professional cameras offering similar or slightly better overall build quality or performance). If you want a much cheaper and better performing camera very competitive with the RX100 lineup, Panasonic ZS200 or LX10 would be highly recommended bar none. 4K video is excellent, not soft, and gives you not 5, but 10 minutes of record time. Battery life is better. Whatever flaws the RX100 models have are absent or improved on the Panasonic compacts. Furthermore, touch screen reliability is better implemented on Panasonic models. Sure, the RX100 V and VI has phase detection autofocus, but too hit or miss and Panasonic has some of the best contrast detection performance, which used to be atrocious back in 2010. Panasonic ZS3 was inferior in performance but made of metal (much better built) to the HX5V. Sony CyberShot (DSC-HX in particular) is probably the best in class for the compact camera market, except certain areas in build quality (mostly plastic, why they are a bit cheaper). Fewest complaints in my book. I am guessing that the H in HX stands for Hasselblad (now owned by a Chinese company, how things changed). Just a theory, but not a theory that the first two RX100 models were Hasselblad-customized. Rip-off, probably. That concept went south (well, discontinued), and Sony should have had the common sense that idea was not ideal.
@bozmundarts26143 жыл бұрын
Idk, the phase detect with my rx100 VA has never been hit or miss, quite the contrary, i can take a ton of photos in a day, from stills to people running around or doing sports and it wont missfocus, the ergonomics work great for me (at least i found everything i needed in the first day of owning it), the zeiss lenses these have seem to be sharper from some tests i've seen which its important if you want the one inch sensors to compete with other camera options, even the colors are great and even better than the ones my canon m100 i had, 5 or 10 minutes of 4k recording neither are that much time? I mean, im not much of a video shooter, but you can literally go through two or three 5 minute clips without too many troubles, depends on temperature and if you place the screen away from the body, the battery life is okay enough to me going through the day with memory recall mode in manual and well... overall i think the RX100 VA, Vi and Vii are super solid cameras out of this world, to say they go bad in some way really dismisses what they let you do if you just learn them.

How does the IBIS of Sony's VI and V compare to Canon's G7X M II?
@cameralabs6 жыл бұрын
It depends which video quality you're using. Canon and Sony both offer enhanced stabilisation if you're filming in 1080p, but in 4k it's only basic stabilisation on the Sony. But remember the Canon doesn't even offer 4k at all. So if you're comparing Canon 1080p to Sony 4k, the Canon will have better stabilisation, but if you're comparing Canon 1080 against Sony 1080, they are similar.
@DanielNilssonTravel6 жыл бұрын
I just need good 1080p for vlogging. My priorities are: 1. good autofocus 2. good stabilisation (not digital, which seems to ruin the quality) 3. decent sound 4. a sensor and lens giving some bokeh 5. a flip out screen 4K and slow-mo are not important for me, especially because these features takes up to much computer power and storage. I rather have a better sensor so I can get a blurry background than 4K. I thought about getting the Canon M50 but the stabilisation seems really bad. Panasonic's cameras seems to have quite good stabilisation though, but their autofocus seems really bad. I'm thinking about Canon's G1X Mark III but it's really expensive for a compact camera. Perhaps the G7X Mark II with a Zhiyun Crane-M would work. Or, maybe the best thing to do is to wait a couple of months to see what new cameras will be coming out.
@Rationalific6 жыл бұрын
I'm what you might call a Sony fanboy. I have the Sony a7 III. But I'm not into this. The price should be $400 less. Another way to get a pocketable camera is to buy something with huge pockets. You'll probably save money that way. I would get an APS-C Canon like the SL2, along with a pair of cheap variable aperture zoom lenses over this. It also helps that I don't think I'll need the super slow-mo and some other headline features. But yeah, I have the a7 III, and I'm sticking with that!
@cameralabs6 жыл бұрын

@cameralabs6 жыл бұрын
If you're looking for blurring in the background, it depends on the focal length you're using. If you're shooting at 70mm, the Mark V will be at f2.8 vs f4 on the VI, so you'll get more blurring in the background. If you can shoot at 200mm though, the VI will get you similar blurring, but from further away.

WOW! the indoor footage is pretty bad, much like a cell phone camera. the one nice thing about the RX100 iv/v is that they does a really good job indoors, such as weddings and other events, for a pocketable point and shoot. I think people are going to be very disappointment with indoor/low light performance. 1 inch sensor screams for faster glass. A faster lens, like the what Panasonic did with the LX-7 (24mm x 90mm - f.1.4 to f.1.8) would have been a much better solution. Removing the ND filter and not adding mic in port is just plain dumb.

If it offers the same max 5 minutes of 4k footage and closes because it's overheating along with the poor battery life of a total of 30 minutes of 4k footage Sony can take their >1000$ camera and shove it in their ass. Hope an "executive"will read this and do what i recommend above. these companies are on the risk of a dying pocket camera market due to all-in-one phones (with respectable movie and picture capability -s9+) and all they do is keep their prices going up each year while delivering things that don't matter on a clever (they think) marketing plan. Yeah because I'm paying 1000$ on a product that does only pictures and movies to be limited by a terrible battery life and (or) shitty 4k restrictions like only filming a certain amount of minutes and other crap and giving us yearly product product releases. Nah Sony. Not going to bite.
@DanLawrenceDC6 жыл бұрын
Way over price, you are basically paying a $500 premium for portability and the zoom lens which is the only thing that really sets it apart from a high-end smartphone. This is basically a $400 camera with a $500 premium attached for small format and zoom lens. For a day to day walk around camera, the iPhone or high-end Android are more than adequate. There are a ton of gimmicks attached to this camera that the average person could care less about. $1200 US = No way in hell!

In my eyes the RX100 V and the VI are way to expensive. Where i live it’s a whopping 1500.- dollars. A new Nikon d7500 costs with a lens kit 1390.- dollars. I dunno what Sony is thinking. The best deal in the RX100 line is the IV model. Meanwhile you can get it new for 600 dollars. A normal price.
@cameralabs6 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean. They're becoming very expensive, although they do offer a great deal. The important thing is to not think of them as just small cameras, but small cameras that do a lot. That said, I'd personally find it hard to spend over 1k on one. I'd feel more comfortable at the 700-800 mark.
@Lion_Hamza6 жыл бұрын
Gordon Laing i would be ok with 900 Dollars even. But over 1000.- is very hard to justify. Yeah the camera has some staggering technical spec. And im sure it’s in general a awesome camera. But does it justify the high price? Guess that’s up to each buyer.

"More capable than ever before"? This camera is dead in the water for video. I can't believe that Sony decided to offer not one, but two, Log video profiles, but decided to offer a "cute" mini tripod instead of a practical way to mount neutral density filters. So if you want to shoot video, you'll have to pay $1200 for the camera + $xx for a third party mount when and if one becomes available that actually works + $xx for neutral density filters. Right.

It is frustrating, but some people want a bigger zoom. For vlogging and general video though, I prefer the Mark V.

BIG BIG NO !!! 1300 EUR for camera that doesn't have MIC IN where RX0 has got it !!! Who designed it for vloggers ??? After Amazing A7III this camera is THE BIGGEST CRAP in Sony cameras history.......and one more thing dedicated mini stick/tripod with 3 buttons(picture, record, zoom) cost + 120 EUR and 1300+120=1420 and audio is still big CRAP !!! This camera without MIC IN is BIG NO in this price range - I love Sony gear but this time is BIG NO !!!

totally, why they call it a vlogger camera???can not install a mic.

I think it's designed more asa travel camera than a vlogging camera. The Mark V is better for vlogging even though it doesn't have a mic input either.

This should have been a new product line as the lack of the ND filter completely kills this camera for anyone wanting to shoot video of a reasonable quality or even creative still images where a slow shutter speed is necessary in bright light conditions - adding movement to water for example. Sony have the technology to produce an infinitely variable ND filter, and they push it in a big way on some of their cameras and the new RX100 should have had this technology. Instead this is a camera for someone who is always going to shoot in AUTO and who will be impressed by a magazine advert telling them they are getting a "big lens." Think of the creative possibilities of having this in your pocket: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4aug2t6j5yUbrs

Toooooooo Expensive. Did Sony believe that we are all stupid? They are spending too much money on advertising.
