Just a small thing re: fragile, not sure about the VI but I've had the original version for 6 years and it's been with me every day in my bag. And the bag's been on a heap of motorbike rides, overseas travel, survived being thrown in the ute (pick up) every day going to construction jobs being used to snap jobs in progress and final results and it's still going great. Only thing failing is the coating on the rear screen making it increasingly harder to see what I'm shooting in strong light. Got the leather case for it at time of purchase which has worked well.

Regarding the “dainty” nature. I use a Sony leather case which offers good protection, looks great and makes it super easy to carry. I’d never go out without it. I have an RX100 v and a RX10 iv. I’ve found them a great combination to travel with although the sensor does have some limitations in low light.

I have a MK V that I use all the time for Street and absolutely love it, but I also use the ND and shoot at 1.8 regularly so I unfortunately will not be upgrading... That said, never drop one of these... I did and I had to get pliers to bend the battery compartment back out so the door would close, then file down the rough aluminum to smooth so it didn't scratch me and my clothes every time I used it. It survived for sure, and still works a year after the drop just fine with zero issues... It's just not pristine anymore... It fell out of a jacket pocket as I was walking, and took a good bounce on the concrete so I'm actually surprised that the superficial marks were all that were done lol

I just purchased one for an upcoming trip to London. I wanted the best point & shoot I could get for LTL (Less Than Leica) and this seemed to be the best choice. I love my Nikon D750, D500 and collection of glass, but I don’t love the weight and bulk. The thought of walking around London day in and day out with even a pared down kit makes my feet hurt before I even cross the pond. I’ll let everyone know how the trip goes with the new toy. If it truly stinks, I’ll probably take it back or sell it because honestly, there isn’t much point in owning anything in between an iPhone and DSLR except for travel involving flights.
@-RedEnoz-5 жыл бұрын
Did you go on that trip yet? I'm going to Mexico City this summer and am thinking of purchasing this camera.
@SyrPipeOrg5 жыл бұрын
Joseluis0015 , I did indeed. Since I haven’t had a point & shoot since a Canon Powershot G9 (which after just looking up came out 12 years ago. Time flies when you’re having fun! 😄) it’s tough to compare it to other cameras. It’s crazy expensive, but it does some pretty incredible things. My only regret is that I wish I had purchased it at least a couple weeks before my trip and learned how to use more of its advanced features than trying to learn as I go. That being said, I can tell you two small things that annoyed me. First, for a “point & shoot” it seems to take longer than it ought to, to retract the lens after you’ve hit the power button. Second, battery life is surprisingly dismal, which is why I bought three extras. I’d typically burn through three batteries in a day of casual shooting and occasional short video clips. If you have the money and the time to learn the features, I don’t think you can find a better camera this size with this quality. I chose this version with the 200mm equivalent lens over its brother with the faster glass and shorter reach because as a tourist, I figured I wasn’t likely to be dealing with a lot of low light situations, but there are plenty of things I wanted to zoom in on, where using your feet to zoom just isn’t an option. I think this might be the only high quality pocket camera with this long of a zoom. Otherwise you need to move into the “bridge” camera category, which certainly aren’t pocketable.

I have both Panasonic LX100 Mark 1 and Sony RX100VI. Panasonic has the advantage of good external controls, quick to adjust what u need for the scene, and the fast aperture for fair subject isolation. RX100 VI has the strenght of a very good optical reach and you can take more photos and subjects when you are strolling around outside. Probably keep RX100 VI and a compact like Panasonic LX100 and RX100 V for better subject isolation shots. Anyway it's better than carrying a full sized dslr with several lenses when you travel often

to add , sony's clear zoom extends the zoom range more. It's slightly inferior to optical zoom but better than the digital zoom, which u can still add to the focal range

I’m curious as too why you endorsed ND filters (which I love) on this video? Thanks for your time Jared I appreciate it.
@bozmundarts26143 жыл бұрын
Oh he doesnt like them for photography, but you kinda need them for video if you wanna get a blurry background effect and a proper shutter speed so the video isnt too smooth or too blurry, y'know, the double your fps rule for shutter speed which will usually tend to be for 30fps 1/60th of a second making your exposure quite bright along you high aperture, therefore, in video its needed the nd filter.

I’ve had the Mk V for about 12 months now and I love it. I’ve shot lots of street pictures most of which I’ve been happy with, I use it as a visual note book for reference shots for drawings and paintings and down load the pictures onto my iPad for alteration if I need to. I’m now thinking of trading up to the Mk6 because of the extra reach which would be very useful but I can probably find a mint one 2nd hand one for a decent price if I hunt around. Two things though, buy a hand grip, there are a few options available, mines aluminium and is basically a bracket that screws in to the base and provides a side grip. With regards to the lanyard, a simple bead will do the job or do as I did and tie a knot in the right place!

My mom bought the VI and I‘m just impressed, how far they have come with the RX100 series. The image quality ist impressive for such a small camera and I would go for this one before purchasing a mFT or something like it for traveling etc. She bought an IV some years before and the combination is like having a lot of stuff in you bag. I think a lot of people underestimate those cameras. What it is really missig in this version, is the F1.8 at the widest. Thats the one of the two things I have to complain with the VI/VII. In this point, Sony should think about something like the lens in the GX5 II. The IV-VA are litte beasts even on events or weddings. I shot with my old RX100 I in parallel to my A7RIII and I love the results of the I. It’s more grain, buts it’s more private, so I get images I don’t get with the Alpha. Fros style of edeting his images is hard for these files. If you’re some one who goes more for an overall softer film look, these cameras are perfect. The G5X II also comes with the old style EVF from the RX100 IV-VA and you might not like the way how you have to pull it out, but your eye leashes dont touch the surface of the EVF the hole time, with this construction. So I’m between the VI/VII/ and GX5 II now.

Thank you for video, I was curious how you will like RX100 VI vs. V. I own secondhand RX 100 VA for maybe 3 years and I love it :) because of size, fast aperture and dynamic range of sensor. I take it almost everywhere, it almost replaced my trusted Pentax K-5 II. And, ofc, I shoot RAW :)

Thanks for the review Jared, it has helped me make up my mind whether or not to buy it, and the verdict is not buy it. It's simply not worth the upgrade from the RX100V. I bought the V because of the 1.8-2.8 F-Stop, as I like to take it to live music events, in fact, that is the only reason I dropped $1,000 on the point and shoot v5, I would much rather use my Canon 5D4, but the venues say no. :-(

Sony barely addressed the common request for full touchscreen interface, but at least this one has touch focus. I guess Sony's camera UI / operating system for their high-end models is not really designed/programmed to support touch control. But we're near the close of 2018 and a no-touchscreen UI seems antiquated. My old Sony NEX 5N has full touchscreen control, so Sony seems very firm that touchscreen is unnecessary, much in the same way that Apple insists that touchscreen on a Macbook would be ridiculous.

I call this camera my "therapy camera" because I can leave my bigger camera at home (well, in the car - I'm trying!) and still get great shots. I returned the Mark V a day or two after I bought it because the VI was soon to come out and I wanted the 200mm zoom. I really agonized over losing the additional f stops but it does what good modern Sony cameras do with higher ISO and if bokeh is a problem for a shot I just love, well that's easy enough in post. I've seen and heard complaints about the cost, but what do you expect the best point and shoot on the market to cost and it is still a Sony after all, so that comes with the territory. Therefore, I think its a great camera for exactly what its made for - a "therapy camera" for serious photographers that are paranoid they are going to miss something if they leave their camera at home. I can live with myself if this is in my pocket. Im sure my A7RIII enjoys the rest... and holy crap I picked up my Canon 6D the other day and it about broke my arm off it was so heavy!

Great review. I just got this camera used. One thing you should have shown is the comparison of the raw after editing vs the in camera KPG after editing. In my first few shoots with this camera I shot RAW+JPG and edited my RAW files, converted them to JPG, and compared them to the native in camera JPG. I was blown away on how much less noise and the quality of the in-camera conversion. I may not be shooting RAW with this camera anymore saving a lot of time.

It is pricey right now BUT once the VII comes out its price will go down. How many people did buy it original price? And how many waited for the price to go down? A week ago I got my hands on a well loved but still very well functioning mark III. I see its flaws, but it is small and with you so it gets the picture.

I have to agree with how fragile the camera is. On the 5th day of a 44 day European trip, I didn't drop the camera but may have bumped the lens while extended on the sill of a train window when my cell phone started ringing. Whatever happened, it wasn't much of a a blow. Right after that I got a message to turn the camera off and back on again.. That did not work. I had to send the camera in and it cost $430 for a complete lens replacement. Now I'm super paranoid on handling the camera which I never use without the strap around my wrist. I am thrilled with the quality of the pictures and it has taken my travel photography to a whole new level as an amateur. I just hope I don't just bump it again!
@kian83826 жыл бұрын
The built-in microphone sounds like it's doing a decent job, can't say the say thing about other aspects though. In the vlogging test you can easily see how incapable the image stabiliser is, and the image quality doesn't look like the sensor technology has made any visible progress since we first saw how the 1 inch type sensor performed on the RX100 original. It's pocketable, but so is any other point & shoot, the only thing different is the price.

I mean for a one inch sensor size camera and not having the best low light performance in the way, it is hard to use it anywhere indoor. Once u zoom, i am sure u will crank the ISO up to 1600-3200 to have any useful shutter speed and by then u will see lots of image noise. Yes, the camera would be a beast outdoor but for 1200 dollars and only able to use it outdoor is self defeating itself as a true all in one camera. If Panasonic can make one with this size with the micro 4/3 sensor, it would be better but I don’t think it can match the autofocus of RX100 series

Good review. Another option is to get the RX100V (not the VI) which has an equivalent FOV of 24-70, a classic zoom. It gives you f/1.8 at the bottom and f/2.8 at the longest length. It also gives you a built-in ND filter, which is advantageous for shooting wide-open in bright light, and for video. Thanks!

I currently have the a7Riii with 24 mm f1.4 on most of the time, for quality shoot, and I use the RX100 III for secondary when I go on travel. For my perfect combo, I would rather get the RX100 VI for the reach, so I don't need to carry the 70-200 lens when I need the long shot. For "really good" quality picture, the a7Riii with 24 mm f1.4 lens is more than enough.

Great job on the review... how did you manage to open the raw images you shot? Lightroom CC and Photoshop plus DNG converter will not open or convert the files......

I really would like to see more cameras use microSD and UHS3, sure their write speeds are slower because there just isnt as many cells, but two micro SD card slots are smaller than a single full sized slot, really adding two microSD slots along side ofa full sized would take up that much space either

Canon G7X mark 2 is better just because the OIS is good.
