Being profesional as a photographer or a videographer is not about being paid, it is about knowledge, it is about knowing your gears perfectly, and how to interact with your subject during the action... So you did it as a profesional because you have this kind of knowledge...!!! Thanks for sharing your experience!!!

Loved it Jason. For several reasons. You beautifully showed the RX100 VII capabilities, especially on a gimbal. You shot it for free for a good friend--revealing your heart and passion for your craft. You shot it at Hotel Seven4One in Laguna Beach (yes, I recognized the venue). In 2014 I attended a two-day workshop with Rob Bell at Seven4One in Laguna Beach that opened my heart to God. Same year, back in Toronto, I shot my daughter's wedding ("professionally") with an RX100 III--she's very close to my heart. I continue to shoot videos on my Sony A7 III that capture stories of people connecting with a God who loves them.

I actually liked that grainy footage. There was something, I don't know, very honest and authentic about it. I know that the standard is this polished ff look but this more of documentary/raw (not perfect) style made me want to watch it till the end.
@thripper53324 жыл бұрын
the thing is, this is not grain, it's digital noise, actual film grain has an organic quality to it, which is why there are film overlays scanned directly from real film to use over digital footage, the noise you get with the digital camera is almost always really bad and artificial

Jason, I shoot Nikon D850 and Z7, from 14mm to 600mm, when at home or local assignment but when on personal travel I will have a Sony RX100 VII in one pocket of my photo-jacket and a Sony RX 100 f/1.8 in the other pocket. The M2 comes along in my carry-on. Having both Sony cameras was a cost effective solution that covers most lighting requirements.

I'm not a professional. I do good work and have some gear that to the uneducated, makes me look like a pro. ONE day before my wife's friend's daughter got married, my wife volunteered me to shoot their wedding. I told her NOOOOO! I had shot two weddings in the early 90s for friends and it was extremely difficult. There is ZERO redundancy when working alone, and this time there was no difference. I felt like a college football safety playing against the NE Patriots. I got run all over the place and trounced on, not knowing what exactly was about to happen next second. I had no time to pre-check ANYTHING, and just enough to make sure the batteries were charged. I hid my audio recorder & microphone in the flowers at the alter, but the sound level was set too low, and it wasn't like I could stop the ceremony to check the levels. [Not at the rehearsal] I set up 2 GH2s at different angles and an A7s as my primary. The absolute worst part was the bride's brother IS a professional videographer but didn't want to get involved since he was in the wedding party. Afterwards, after 5 hours of editing, I just handed over my videos and photos to the mother, to let her go through the HOURS and HOURS left of editing. Sometimes you have to expect what you paid for.
@raksh95 жыл бұрын
I hope you had a good talk to your wife after this craptacular experience. If we're being really charitable, she probably thought your gear and skills were up to the task, and wanted to give the bride a present of them. At the pessimistic end, she volunTOLD your unpaid work so she could score social points with family friends. Just wondering, does this happen very often? "Oh, it's okay, Stan will do it, won't you, Stan?" Hope that's not the case, man. Sounds like you did a decent job for someone who doesn't shoot professionally. Good thing you handed over the footage to someone else to edit, you don't want to deal with the expectations of a bride and groom for a job you weren't prepared for.
@stans52705 жыл бұрын
@@raksh9 Yeah, I talked to her about it. In the end, there were no winners, but only a "teachable moment". My wife will still attempt to voluntold me, but I will state my reasons against it and she understands. The mother of the bride though... WHOA, she thinks of men as Santa Claus. I pity her husband.
@raksh95 жыл бұрын
@@stans5270 Good work on that part, too, as long as you nip the voluntelling in the bud. I don't know the dynamics of your relationship, but I generally refuse to be voluntold for something on principle. If you want me to do something, ask me first. It's about courtesy and respect. If the third party asks how come you're not doing whatever it is, the words, 'unfortunately, there was a misunderstanding' come in real handy.
@stans52705 жыл бұрын
@@raksh9 I think of it this way, they had a guy that changes his own oil and rotates tires and told him to rebuild an engine [or a transmission]. I gave it the old college try. I spent 4 hours of prep, 6 hours of shooting, and 4 hours of pre-editing and it would have taken me an additional 10-15 hours of editing for a final product and that's what the bride's son does as a professional. She needed to get HIM to do it. Way too much work for an acquaintance.
@stans52705 жыл бұрын
@@raksh9 Yeah me too. In the end, they got the videos, but not a final product. The one thing that I miss is that they never showed me the end product. But I'm not in the position to ask to see it. Another analogy is, I was a surrogate mother and had to give up the baby after it was potty-trained.

This is one of your best video because it took an idea/challenge and put it through the real-world testing. I agree that most people will not even notice the lack of bokeh in the video. I was surprised with the quality of what you were able to capture from the RX100 VII (it is the photo/video-grapher more than the equipment). As for the iPhone wedding, you might be able to use it as either a second/third shooter and mix in the content. Another option might be to attach the iPhone 11 to your main setup (hot/cold shoe?) That way wherever the main camera is point, the iPhone will be capturing the same direction but with maybe the wide lenses...just a thought.

Great capture and analysis of the camera. I've never owned a gimbal for my 750D Canon camera but picking up a RX100 VII and maybe I'll have to look at this crane one. The final result for the wedding video was awesome and my only feedback would probably be matching the right audio to be the same as the left for the ceremony as I am listening on my phone with its stereo speakers (I'm sure I would be able to tell even more with headphones) that it's more biased to the left side

Bought rx100 vii to use as a web cam using the elgato camlink in 4k video. The camera overheats & shutsdown in 7 to 8 minutes. So it cannot be used as a webcam to stream video gaming with my pc & the elgado camlink . in 1080p, there are black bars on 3 sides of the webcam incert. Again, seems the Rx100vii can not be used with elgato camlink and can not be used for any videos longer than 7 minutes. I have a atmos but have not tried it. Suggestions please, since Im a new user to the RX100vii. Otherwise, any 4k video, even without the elgato webcam, but just regular 4k video, overheats in 5 to 8 minutes. Are there video settings to stop the overheating if the camera is used as a 4k webcam? so as a video camera, we must start and stop it every 4 minutes to avoid overheating and shutdown. I bought a rx100vii as well. I was hesitant, given the cost but i love it. The intelligent stabilization is amazing too, feels like you can get away without a gimbal for most shots, stills IQ is also very good. You are one of the few that can pronounce bokeh instead of bokay - like latte. Anyway great that you shot at f/9. Tired of shallow depth of field all over the place. I think for low light / bad interior lighting turning footage in in BW or lowering saturation can be a creative workaround. I think you could shoot professional gigs with the RX100VII, maybe 2? Or 1 VII and a VA?

Not to mention a lot faster than the hired professionals. It's a great little camera but the lack of DOF unfortunately makes even the wonderful cinematic you shared something... less. Your product shots OF the RX100 itself actually pop a lot more than the shots the RX100 took because of this. Don't get me wrong, it still looks great and what a fantastic friend to donate your time and talent to add to the forever record of their wedding but the RX100 while good for B-roll, I'd hate to see it as the main video camera of a wedding.
@EinzMY5 жыл бұрын
I think its a good experiment that turns out great because it is not a paid gig. Sony just need to release rx100 vii with 24-70 1.8 - 2.8 lens that gives more shallow dof. Many people will be interested in that camera
