Another great video to put in my back pocket. I purchased mine in August 1984 for $1250. It still works, and last winter I finished digitizing important videos and now will move on to interesting leftovers until something critical dies. Who knows, you may produce more 2710 repairs in the future. Carry on and thanks!

It's a shame about the old cartoons being banned. As a kid growing up in the 80's and early 90's in the UK those cartoons were shown regularly and I really enjoyed them as did my younger sister. Now that she has a child we have being trying to find our childhood favourites to show her and they have either disappeared completely or heavily edited which spoils them. It feels like they are slowly removing the past and stealing bits of my childhood.

I recently found out the reason these 711B machines load and unload so slowly is because the sun and planetary gears tend to seize up. Another contributing factor is the tension of the belt for the cassette carriage. I just replaced these gears on an SL-T30ME I got recently and now it loads and unloads like a new machine. By the way the SL-2710 service manual is dated August 1983 so that gives you an idea of the age...

00:29 - Sims for giant ants. 16:46 - I'm probably stating the obvious for you Dave, but studio CRT monitors weren't subject to regulations about x-ray emission, the glass wall of them didn't contain lead, or at least not as much as it was required for consumer TV receivers and monitors. 23:09 - PLA was selected as general printing material, because it doesn't emit toxic fumes when heated to glass transition temps, but on the other hand it performs nowhere as good as the more toxic nylon (which can be ONLY printed in a well ventillated area). Tiny gear teeth with PLA, it's just not a good idea. 25:38 - Now you made me crave for sweets again! 26:03 - Look at those cars! 😁

Well, in this case, we cannot really complain when parts like a gear fails in a VCR like that. The SL-2710 is vintage 1984. 1985 was about the time where Sony was turning out SuperBeta models like the SL-HF900. This is a machine that's about 40 years old, well beyond the VCR's intended service life. Parts do get old and fail, and that's just the way it is. It's definitely a testament to Sony's quality at the time for their machines of this vintage to last as long as they do, though.

With respect to 3d printing, it very much so depends on the technology used and materials chosen by the engineer. The technology has also matured quite a bit since the early days. MJF and SLS are about the only 3d printing methods I would trust with anything that will be taking mechanical load. They produce resilient parts usually out of Nylon. The kicker is the machines are very expensive so you would have to have a company 3d print them for you. Most of the consumer printers are really only good for cosmetic parts. Personally, I have sold hundreds of 3d printed couplers and gears using a industrial MJF printer and no one has said they have failed. I give any product a good shakedown with my personal equipment first. It is all about picking the right process and material for the job. You are definitely right if they gave you parts printed with a PLA or a SLA printer as they absolutely cannot take a load when the dimensions are this small. I have even seen 3d printed gears produced on Resin printers literally explode if the load is too much. I very much am looking forward to you getting a chance to use that MJF printed 711B2 driving arm gear I sent you in 2022 as I am hoping that will change your mind on 3d printing. The loading gear is very common to fail and I have seen some people use those RC car gears you can get for like 7 bucks for 100 off of Amazon. Very cheap repair if you go that route. I have never had luck with glue or epoxy on Nylon as that stuff is a absolute bugger to get good adhesion on. But, if you got the process down with the right epoxy, it certainly is the cheapest repair option.

More Betamax decks to keep trhe format going for a few more years. A lot of cassette and laserdisc players are now sufferent the same fate with no spares available we have no choice except to hope that the epoxy glue works for a while. Re the unedited cartoons on laserdisc, when i compare them with the heavily cut ones that you can buy today they are far more ammusing. Some of them still sell for high prices, but i am keeping my complete collection.

3D printed gears are not strong enough, period. I won't use them on any repair. I have a Sony CFS-9000 that still has no working auto reverse because all you can get is 3D printed gears, and the last time I tried them the teeth all sheared off the first time I tried auto reverse. That's with the ones that didn't split just trying to get them on.

Dave, I keep seeing that a certain gear can the produced on a 3D printer. These gears are small, in most cases, so not a large printer is not required. Have you ever investigated on getting a 3D printer? Of all the people that I know, You might be one of the few hat could use one on a regular basis. Just a thought. Maybe your son ( the one that seems not to have an agenda, ha ha) might get interested.

OK, after watching the rest of the vlog Dave, I see why you're not getting a 3D printer. But the years that have past from the last time you were exposed to gears made on one of them, has anything changed? Materials, programs to make these parts? I wonder if AI will come into play here? Your objections to using these parts seems to be quite valid.

Another thing to consider is people will not spend much to fix this old equipment. Even collectors like this. If the gear had been snapped i could have pulled one from the slhf900 he left with me last year. Had no part been available he would've just scrapped the machine. 99 out of 100 would just scrap it and move on. That 1% that say fix it no matter what the cost, well you don't want that customer because guaranteed it won't be good enough and then you are married to the device. I got into that situation back in the day when I was working on the business. It was a canon fancy hi8 with removable lens. A1 perhaps. Anyway it was full of bad caps that had leaked all over the board. Unit was perhaps 8 or 9 years old. Did not recommend repair. Shop owner did not recommend repair. Customer insisted that it be repaired. We had sold it to him when new and he had purchased 2 additional lenses (owner was a private dick) used long lenses to spy on his target so for him as a business tool cost was no issue, he wanted it fixed. Had boards been available we would have changed them but it was long out of production and canon had not brought out a new camera that used the same lenses at that point. Guy authorized 1000 to repair. That was 500 in my pocket at the time. A lot of money for s single repair in the mid 90s. Changed all the caps. Pretty close to 100 if I remember. There was alot. I spent an entire day changing them out. I was sorry I was bullied into doing the work. The guy was a not only a private dick, he was just a dick period. That camera was back about 10 times over the coming months for gremlins. We never could resolve it. Electrolytic had leached into the internal layers of the board and damaged it. I'm still sitting on an evw300 now that the guy wants to spend a ton on and I don't want to do it. He even sent me a donor camera as his has a charred board so I could pull the boards. Problem is the donor cam has bad boards too. It needs all the caps done and I just know that it more than that. It's one thing to do your own, but for someone else it can be a can or worms.

3d printers have layer lines and that's where they Sheer off they do have Resin printers that make a much more solid part that would do better. the best way would be to cast them the lock picking lawyer has a key casting kit that would make these small parts out of metal in minutes
@PlutoniusX
@PlutoniusX 3 ай бұрын
Resin produces strong but very brittle parts. Since it is Resin is also has none of the benefits of a thermoplastic like Nylon. If you give the gear enough load, the teeth and usually the whole part will literally shatter. I like the process but you really have to be careful with it.

If you had a government that would care about profiteering and scams, you wouldn't need to pay exorbitant broker fees. I can send a big package from Germany to the Philippines for like 40 EUR and they only pay a few pesos for customs processing, that's it. On the other hand, I pay 1.47 CAD converted from 0.27 EUR per KW/h for electricity. And it's already the best possible offer.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 3 ай бұрын
It has NOTHING to do with the government. When stuff of low value is shipped via post, that's the government. They own the post office. Imports over 20.00 are subject to sales tax just like buying something in the store. For samples, and gifts and devices being temporarily imported for the purporse of repair there is no charge. I am supposed to charge 5% GST on the repair charges and remit that. The big american private shipping companies charge processing fees. If I don't want to pay those fees, I am free to spend 3 hours of my time and drive to the airport and fill out the paperwork. UPS and DHL won't deliver untill the fees are paid, so I send the bill to whoever shipped it, and if they don't pay, they have the option of paying to get their un-repaired item returned at their expense or if they don't pay it gets disposed of. Fed-ex on the other hand just delivers it and then sends the bill 30 days later. There is never any tax or duty on low cost things, or for warranty replacements, or items entering canada for repair as far as the government is concerned. These charges are by private companies. My electricity here is 0.06 over night rate 0.11 day time and 0.16 peak rate 4pm to 9pm in tier 1, and 0.09 over night, 0.14 day, and 0.19 peak rate 4pm to 9pm tier 2 rate. First 675KWh is tier 1 and remainder for the month tier 2. So its pretty cheap here. I do all the heavy lifting, charging the cars, running the HW heater in over night rate 11pm to 7AM and have all the big power draws off in that expensive time 4-9pm. Easy to do with timers.
