I have the XB31, Charge 3 and 4 . Sony XB31 sounds absolutely amazing with live mode, a lot better than Charge 3 and 4, but battery time get's worse with it. In stock XB31 sounds worse than Charge 3 and 4. Download Sony app, select standard mode, Bass - 2, Mids & Treble + 10, download JetAudio player or any other EQ if you listen to online audio, settings: 60hz/-2 , 100hz/-2 , 1k/+2 , and the rest +4. With this settings it sounds cleaner and richer overall than both Charge 3 and 4. Whatever you chose Don't get the charge 4, the soundstage is non-existent on it and it sounds boring after a while.

Hi guys, just got both JBL Charge 3 and Sony XB31. I did the test in different environments - indoor, outdoor big room, small room etc. The conclusion is XB31 has definitely "cleaner" sound ( you can hear more sounds) XB31 works better with mid and high frequencies. I wouldn't say that charge 3 has more bass - that is the first impression which I had too - bass of charge 3 is louder and sounds better in high volume mode but XB31 present spectrum of sound much better especially if you don't want to listen on 100% volume. I can confirm Charge 3 sound is muffled comparing to XB31 - but you have to hear it live - not on the comparison movies. My vote goes to XB31

I have both of these speakers and i like both but i personally like the xb31 better. This video does not do justice to the sound. But this also depends on what kind of music you listen to! The xb31 also has an app you can download to help you change the color of the lights around the edge of the speaker, the sound, and the base. It also has a party booster mode turning the speaker into a fun little drum kit (not that its used much) but its a fun little addition.

Are you sing AUX or bluetooth? If bluetooth for the Sony are you using the high quality LDAC codec? LDAC is compatible with pretty much any android phone running Oreo 8.0 or later.

31 took my favorite mid sized speaker for about 2 weeks , it literally has it all! But then it dropped back to being even in favoritism along with the charge 3. Some songs do sounds better on JBL like songs by the artist burial, lots of bass in his beats! One song in particular i like to test on every new speaker i get called foster care, it has a sort of resonance this just meshes with my mind during the main loop of the song and to this day still sounds like its played better or like its supposed to sound on Charge 3, Xtreme, Boombox! Heck even multiple songs were the JBL just seem more clear, despite live sound or clear audio plus being engaged. I think the Different placement of the passive radiators has a lot to do with it! Love the better stereo separation in addition to also having bigger drivers so the 31 definitely sounds bigger especially on its own its fantastic!!! And man i love how low it goes about 20hrz or something hits the low bass notes like a champ and definitely hear more detail in some tracks that i never heard b4 Live sound is definitely my favorite sound mode the dispersal is impressive especially it u place it in the right spot! I use it solo a lot and im always impressed! I have more but ill cut it here. But definitely it u have the dough go for the 31 but Charge 3 it still great though approaching its 2 full year on the market! PS for the live sound haters EDM music is best suited for that mode! sample song Heart weighs a ton by galantis! Play an extra base mode then live sound and extra base mode again I bet you will go back to live sound!

Although that's kind of its purpose, I still value clarity when listening to my favorite vocalist. Ive previously bought mdrx1000 nc sony headphones that are supposedly more "clear" but after buying extra bass sony headphones, I discovered not only did it have more bass(which I love) it sounded just as clear, and even cancelled out more noise for me. So I guess im wondering as someone who has the speaker, are these accusations of too much bass legit or just blown out proportion like they are for sony's extra bass nc headphones.

Kenneth Batchelder Definitely blown out of proportion with the XB31 being the best of the 3 new sonys in my opinion if something isn't too clear definitely adjusting it will help live sound mode is Pre spectacular yes you will get that bit of an echo effect but it's mimicking a sound stage like concert sound which is exactly what's in their description so that's where that's their vocal clarity is pretty dam good too if you check out my video of Or the XB31 the vocal still sound pretty clear you can always just go to standard mode which still sounds fair especially on the XB20. I'll still give it to JBL for clarity but Sony's are like literally right on the same level.

Hi Willington. I think both are great speakers, but in this battle, Sony wins. It has a better balanced sound between bass, mids and treble, besides JBL delivering more crispy ones. I also think JBL mids are still no there. Is like bass and treble are overboost. The sounds modes on XB31 are also an advantage to it. Finally, if we look only to the sound quality, I still believe that XB30 beat both Charge 3 and xb31.

James Nguyen Do Well, basses in JBL looks better cause it's mids are weak. Highs on JBL are better then Sony, but it has more sound fidelity. You can hear it when "don't hate me" is playing. Xb31 allows you to clearly listen to the second voice, something that's almost lost on charge 3. Its mean that Sony has richer sound spectrum than JBL. But charge 3 still being a great speaker anyway. Sound balance on JBL is more affordable to electronic music in my opinion. But if you want to listen all music styles, than XB 31 is better.

I know that this comment regarding the video is irrelevant but: Is it true that the Sony extra bass range, when there is little battery drastically reduces the volume? And if so, can I use an external battery to keep the battery on? I have heard that many people complain that when for example the sony srsxb40 is 50% low its volume "enough", but is this true, or exaggerate? ... And if it's true, if I use an external battery, the loudspeaker sony srs xb40 at maximum volume and with the external battery, it would reach approximately 5 hours of playback? Sorry I can't clearly understand your question but let me try to answer it. When the battery on the XB41 drops to 20%, the volume of the speaker drops to about 25%. If you plug it in, it will go back up to 100% volume but you have to turn it off first and then back on. This Is the same for the xb40 but the only difference is that the xb40 drops it's volume at 50% battery.

Hearing these speakers in person is a lot different than on headphones or speakers. You can really identify bass and other anomalies, where as in these tests, they all seem to have more bass than normal. The tests are a good first step, but in person is better!
