Sony STR-D2020 from 1990. 130WPC, discrete transistors. What was originally a biasing activity turned into a little bit larger project. Apparently I had never been in here, somehow this was missed when purchased at a thrift store.
Here’s a video of the experience.
Two main power reserve caps were bulging and I swapped out with Pioneer D1S caps from a parts unit.
This appears to be a high hour unit, a number of the wire connectors, relay, and driver transistors all had cracked solder joints. Upon investigation from the bottom, the whole power supply area had a bunch of cracked solder joints.
After re-flowing and adding solder, everything is working perfect.
What strange is that this receiver was generally working “fine” before, but when it was first turned on, I had to turn the volume up, and I thought the balance was flaky because one channel took a little time and volume to kick in. I also noticed that the equalizer did not engage and sometimes the FM and inputs for a little flaky. All I did was turn it off and back on, and it would be fine.
I’ve confirmed via a number of tests that everything appears to be working normally now. And it’s really pushing my HPM-100’s tonight.
