Why after all these years? Well this model has just been discontinued but is still an excellent option and is for sale in some decent eBay listings.
If you don’t need 120hz or 8K this is a viable option and a decent one.

Ive been using this receive for a couple of years now in a 5.1.2 set up. It is an amazing receiver. Highly recommend for setting up Atmos/DTS X on a budget!

They updated it last year (have been every two year or so) and it does have newer models of it - such as the TA-AN1000 and STR-AN1000 i believe. Then there’s several ES-models. However, that’s only in different parts of Europe.

I think it used to be every two years but they seemed to have waited longer this time as I got this in 2018. The new models also seem more expensive sadly.

@@Chris-techgamesfood Maybe they have. I hope they do have at least one more in them. But yeah, the -AN1000 is expensive now. But the STR-DN1080 was too when it came out. Only a bit less. Then it dropped to less than 50%. Regardless, it’s not that much of an upgrade. The STR-DN1080 stands well. I can only think of the new 360 mapping that would be much better. Enjoy! 👍

@@Justusson I suppose if you must have 8k pass through and 120hz then it’s a good purchase. I don’t know anyone with an 8k tv though or 120hz. It’s all good tech but most PS5 and Series games can’t hit 120fps at all or 8k. Smaller games maybe or competitive ones, but I don’t feel it’s worth the price right now. Also I don’t like the lack of style change, the 1080 looks nice and premium but the AN1000 should have at least some form of visual difference.

It actually seems quite unnecessary, unwarranted really, to be spending that money for an equipment in this range, just for the pass through options and future proofing. If 8K and 120hz is important to you, then you’ll probably be going for a better piece of AV receiver too, sound wise and build quality. 4 ohm receiver, etc. A Marantz or something,.. This seems to be a bit skew - something for the ES models perhaps. But, I guess they had to add something to it. Otherwise it would have been the 1080 almost through and through! 😅

@@Justusson yeah I totally agree, I love these Sony units but unlike their TVs, these AV Receivers aren’t proper high end. For me, 8K and 120hz would only likely be used by ONE machine and that would the PS5 in select situations. I’d simply put the PS5 through the TV and use eARC to route the sound to the AV Receiver. I suppose for the right person though, this new one is worth it maybe.

I would like to buy this receiver. There are even new ones on eBay. An enigma is bothering me! If a device (DVD) that has an hdmi output is connected to, for example, the Video 1 input via hdmi. Is it possible to connect an analog device to the analog input of the Video 1 receiver (video and audio), for example, a VCR? Does the receiver recognize both signals at the same input? I read the user manual where there is no explanation for such a connection. It is only stated. hdmi and input name change. My question is whether it is possible to simultaneously connect to the input with the same name Video 1 (hdm and analog) and whether the receiver automatically recognizes it? Unless! Is it possible to choose hdmi or analog through the menu setting? Does it allow this possibility when several devices are running and the other is not being used at the same time!? I hope you understand my question!

I’ll be honest, I don’t have any analog devices connected, although there’s lots of inputs there. The menu does allow you to choose which connection is enabled for each input name but I don’t know whether it’ll allow two at once but not at the same time. I think unless you’re going to fill all the HDMI slots though, you should have spare for analog stuff too. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help 😭

They need to change the screens on AV Receivers that plastic they use is a Scratch magnet, you can see the screen is covered in Scratches. Cheaply made products

Yeah that is a good point, I don’t tend to really look at the screen though. Glass would be better but more expensive i guess.

AV Receivers don't even need a display nowadays because they have apps, and Web controls with all settings on them

@@MusicMovies67 you’re completely correct, I use the Sony app to control it all now. Especially useful as in some films the bass is way higher than in others.

I have the same receiver, and yes, it is awesome. However, your information about the receiver being one of their latest is not accurate. Please refer to sonys website, and you will see that they have all new models, including their elevated standard models, respectively. I hope to purchase the STR-AZ5000ES or STR-AZ7000ES. Both units will also pass through 8k at 120fps, which is vital for gaming consoles of today. And of course, 8k future proofs the receiver for times to come.

Hi, yeah I realised that shortly after. Sony said they were leaving the AV Receiver market but then suddenly hit us with the new models, even if they are near identical looking. For the high price though I’m not sure they’re massively worth it yet. There’s not a ton of 120fps games and no 8k games, probably till the next generation. If you buying a new one it makes sense to future proof, but right now the prices aren’t right i don’t think. Thanks for watching 😊

Have you had any problems with decoding Atmos and DAtmos sound? Noise popping/cracking when stopping/starting in multi channel mode/ Dolby Surround? I have, unfortunately. The latest update didn’t fix it,.. :-/

Very rarely and never when watching, on those rare occasions it’s when switching or changing sound field. It has occasionally froze up and needed to turned off at the plug and back on. Overall though it’s a great bit of kit, especially for the price.

How does the device access Internet radio stations? I'm asking because Sony support says support for vTuner was discontinued last year! Is there a possibility or some other alternative to access the contents of internet stations on this device?

You can connect an FM antenna but as for radio I think it comes down to whatever Spotify offers and you connect your account to the device. Perhaps it wasn’t a widely used feature.

This AV receiver is hooked up to 7.1 speakers with a powered sub. The TV speakers are excellent but almost never used. Sorry if I didn’t make that clear in the video 🙃 Thanks for commenting and watching
