I agree with you on the dual subwoofers with one exception. I just purchased the Monolith M-215 dual 15 inch 2000watt sub, and I can honestly say, I have never been in any theater, IMAX included that comes anywhere close to my dedicated theater. You feel every explosion as if it’s actually happening. Absolutely unbelievable performance.

For me, it's important to get solid on the basics. The vast majority of content out there is at most 5.1 surround sound. Invest in those speakers first - especially the fronts - and think of expansion later.

Excellent! I hope this helps those considering a home theater. I was fortunate that I had plenty of unfinished room in the uphill side of a daylight basement to build from the floor up. I started with the amount of room available, then built out in the best dimensions (width, depth, height) possible. I've done everything you've suggested, except for the subwoofer, which I plan to correct. Right now I'm running a 12" ported SVS. Thanks for doing a thorough, spot on job!

i totally feel your point on screen size. everyone on the web or in stores talking like 'uuuh don't go too big with the screen or you will need to move your head' - this is exactly what I WANT for immersion. just like in cinemas I like to sit 1 or 2 rows closer than middle to get that real cinema vibes.

I have seen So Many home theater setup guides that say you only need One sub due to the way people hear such low frequencies and cannot easily pinpoint the source. It kinda made me cry a little inside reading that so many times.

I guess the by far most common mistake is focusing components, names and shiny surfaces over a good concept. As a German, I find this especially obvious in American HTs in KZbin. Most people have a rather small screen directly on the wall, because the shiny speakers need to fit around it. Not only are floor standing speakers often times not needed nor favorable in sound (the emit low frequencies in every direction), they are also significantly more expensive than on wall or in wall solutions. That money should be spent on acoustic treatment instead, since a cheap speaker will play much better in an acoustically treated room, than an expensive speaker plays in a bare room. Most rooms I see on KZbin have zero acoustic treatment in their room, and basically no one has sufficient low frequency treatment. Dampening your room in low frequencies and therefore mitigate booming frequencies will do a lot more, than just blindly buying two woofers because this is apparently always better... I don’t want to be too harsh, but cables and number of subwoofers are hardly the problem in most home theatres. Feel free to disagree, but I myself wasted loads of money on shiny speakers with famous brand names to get mediocre results. Now, I have everything hidden I a baffle wall, with an SBA and it plays better than it ever did before + better than 99% of home theaters I have heard. That is all at LOWER cost than before. A CONCEPT is what makes and breaks a good cinema and this is probably the best advice I can give...

Thanks for the advice sir. Currently I have an unfinished bsmt below ground & need a nice clean home theater 5.1 to start which is 15*15 or squeeze in 15*20 height 7'. Budget is low but as you said concept is key. Have an older denon receiver, TV to purchase with lots of wiring, insulation & choosing non wireless for quality. HDMI over cat6. Any other advice given? Good Talk, I use 1/4inch Shielded speaker cable on both my systems. I use my receiver power only for rear channels. All other speakers run on separate power source. The best way for movie sound. Stay Safe, Be Safe!!!

audiophiles did a similar video and one of the mistakes that blew me away was people doing entire sound setups with every speaker as an in-ceiling speaker. If you go to amazon right now and look at reviews for in-ceiling speakers you'll see reviews of people with 5/7/9 channel systems with every speaker in their ceiling firing at the floor. Worst is, they will be one of the top rated/most helpful rated comments on the product meaning people are seeing that, thinking its a good idea and likely pursuing it themselves.

You are missing out big time. I'm a high advocate for avr room correction calibration. Before atmos I would highly recommend, but now with atmos, it is a must. Search for videos that give tweaks in running the calibration. It does make a difference and well worth doing.

I just bought a new Denon (S960H) to go with my new Q90T but I absolutely hated the way Audyssey sounded on my last receiver which was also a Denon. I'm thinking about just bypassing it altogether this time since I always liked my manual EQ settings better. I really hope I'm not missing out but I'm not really sure that it's worth it. I only have a 5.1 system so maybe I won't be missing too much. Do you know if there are people that do this professionally that you can hire? Just a thought but we'll see.

@@seanadams5919 , I don't know what your last AVR was to give a comparison to the S960H, but yes its worth the trouble of room calibration. Before I mentioned watching vids on calibration will help, but I did a search and WOAH, just too many to know which is best. There are tons of new vids since the last time I researched it. I'd say the audio side of things are more important than video to me. I have an 10+ year old 1080p 43 inch tv but a set of Polk S15 and 2 12 inch subs. Movie experience is fantastic even being limited by the TV. Id choose it over a 4k 6o inch/soundbar combo any day.

Fully agree with you 👍 though with my Denon X4500H I was able set my speakers as small for home theater use but large when using only the left and right channels, makes a huge difference when watching something in stereo without the LFE channel

Audio is so so important. My first experience with home theatre 5.1 surround sound was at a mate's place, back in the day of CRT TVs. Despite the small size of the screen (it was pretty big for CRT but not compared to modern flat panels), having a kick ass surround system with subwoofer made movies come alive to me. I'll have to update my amp one day in order to get HDMI (still rocking optical audio) but having surround sound for me is a must.....even if my wife hates the visible speakers and would prefer a much smaller soundbar, my movies are too important to me to ever do that 😀

Bro your vid’s helped me a bunch. I created a budget home theatre buying used on my local buy and sell website. I lucked out buying. Got some good stuff cheap. I was in a rental when I did it. (Pre Covid). I since bought a home. Took that system from my rental and built a dedicated room for it by following your advice. It was smaller than I wanted. But it worked. I have now added sound diffusion and absorption. Helped so much. COVID’s now over. Saw maverick Thor love and thunder in regular and Jurassic park dominion in 3D in the theatre while I was away at work. Maverick was awesome. Only problem the guy in front of me was leaning back into my crotch the whole movie. He is lucky I had scrubbed down there before the show. Like seriously bud…. WTF! Thor love and blunder wasn’t worth the ticket price. And real 3D on JPD had no depth compared to my DLP link system. My cheap home system blew everyone of those experiences away. I can’t imagine the hurtles in front of the industry when I can get a better theatre experience at home for under a grand. Can’t wait to see maverick in my power recliner without a dude between my legs the whole time. Hopefully they release it in bluray 3D!

Oh man, thank you for explaining the subwoofer crawl! I’ve seen it mentioned on so many forum threads but never with an explanation. I had been assuming it meant put the sub in different places and see how it sounds. This seems way less time consuming/tedious. With everything else I’m trying to do (including getting a permit to build a wall), every little concept adds to an overwhelming experience. The sheer cost of this little project is stressful enough.

I think the one thing you missed was how important room lighting can be with front projection. So many people want a few lights on with front projection, but then don’t design their room lighting properly to accommodate this. Ceiling spotlights, over the seating area, allow for a great deal of in-room lighting while the projector is on without significant on-screen impact. Very solid points across the board otherwise!

For long video runs, just use CAT6 with HDMI converters on the ends. Works like a charm and is MUCH easier to run through ceilings.

I'm currently in a Home Theater build as I write and I believe I managed to beat 9 out of the 10 mistakes in my build and that one is #10 Crossover frequency. However, I'm finding that I need to purchase a new 4K Home Theater Receiver. Your videos have helped me move this project into the today and tomorrow range rather than the maybe someday range, thanks. #3. real tough break on that one for us when we switched from LCD/LED to OLED; LG in particular. The wall mount is "really mounted" into the wall, and the LG's have their mounting holes all the way at the bottom of the units...meaning what used to be nice and centered for a proper screen height is now stupid high on the wall. I gave up and never looked for a mount adapter to get the screen down properly and my neck has hated me ever since.

Fascinating video. Projectors not that popular in UK and home cinema rooms fairly uncommon as space is at a premium for most people. If I took a straw poll of my friends and colleagues, I'd say the vast majority don't even have a soundbar!

Just use as big of ofc wire you can in the shortest runs possible and you're good to go. Even that is overkill but it's quick, simple, and cheap.

I agree with MOST of what you've said... I do not agree with the often repeated idea that you should almost always set your speakers to "small"... I have a pair of SVS SB2000 Pro subs in my Living Room HT. I prefer subs to be sealed "spacesuit tight for the fastest, most accurate response. My lower speakers are all older (v1 and b2) Paradigm Studio Reference... Pair of 100s pair of ADP 450s, pair of 20s, and a CC 450) I use 4 SVS Elevations mounted at the top of the wall (2 front and 2 back). I have played with the settings, and Audessy 32,and a C-weighted Db meter, and a full suite of test CDs (and test LPs!) and by far the best sounding and most even frequency response comes with the fronts (Studio 100) set large but with a 40Hz high pass, the 450s and 20s all set at 80Hz, and the Elevations at 110Hz. Notable perhaps that I have treated front and back wall and have heavy curtains on one side big window and patio door) and open to the dining room on the other. The subs are set to play all LFE and any signals below crossover frequency for other channels. I have 2 other home theatre setups in my place that only have one sub... I have the front L and R for each of those set "large" as well but the crossover points are higher (towers too but not as big). Every reviewer seems to push for setting all speakers to "small"... perhaps because tiny, or under powered bookshelf speakers are so common, but I believe it is VERY misleading. You risk muddier, one note bass (especially with ported subs!) that way. If your fronts have a listed response below 30Hz you should definitely explore using the "large" setting, and experiment with the crossover point. If you have a good constant amplitude sine wave sweep (like a test CD or file) and a decent C-weighted meter you can get the response pretty flat easily. The extra bonus is ALL of your music will sound better too. Combat the "one note thump"! In movies AND music! LOL end of rant.

Little advice... when you are doing your audio budget, after you figure out what AVR you want, if you have a tighter budget, buy some highly reviewed budget speakers, and then spend more money on your sub or subs... you can set the crossover a little higher at 100hz. If you’re state side HSU is great place to look for high end subs that won’t break the bank, you would have to spend significantly more to get something truly next level. The subs will help make your budget speakers feel much larger in size and take loud off them if you set your crossovers at 100hz , if you have 2 subs it will help even out the base in the room too... remember most frequencies below 120hz are “center” meaning mono you won’t be losing much sound direction at all at 100hz. When you are ready to upgrade your speakers you will already have a nice anchor or foundation with the subs.

6. Wrong Audio Connection Yeah, I always try to use the best audio connection possible. In my case, it’s optical connection for now. Although I do have a 65 Samsung TV, which supports HDMI ARC, but my 2.1 Vizio Soundbar doesn’t support it. Maybe someday, I’ll buy a better Soundbar.

Great info as always. I love how you get to the point, but maintain such a sincere and relaxed attitude. Dual subs made a massive difference in my room and taking the sub crossover down to 70hz really helped as well. I like the subs to only kick in for the really low effects. It can ruin the movie if every car door closing, or every low voice (Batman) comes out of the subs. I am guilty of running my subs way too hot though... Keep the good vids coming man!

I set my crossover to where the speakers manufacturers limits are. If the spec sheets says down to 50hz then I set it there. Better receivers allow for individual speaker eq/crossover points vs a whole room level.

Just a PSA to anyone who might have a negative attitude towards soundbars - if you are on a budget, Vizio has a 5.1 Soundbar surround system with a (extremely powerful) subwoofer and two rear satellite speakers for UNDER $200. It actually sounds phenomenal once you get the settings the way you’d like. As much as I want the system this tech savvy man has, I lack the funds for an expensive setup like that. His theater room there looks insane, I don’t think I’d ever leave the house if I was him, lol.

The Optoma CinemaX P1 4K projector is incredible. My ceiling is low above my screen, because my screen sits directly under my AC duct. I actually decided to take the same black material that covers most projector screen frames, and put it on the ac duct, covering the entire bottom of the AC duct. Wow o wow! I have the Optoma CinemaX P1 4K UHD Ultra-Short Throw Laser Cinema Projector, and it basically took it from 4K to 8K! 🤣🤣 seriously though, thats how much difference it made for me. Not saying everyone will have the same result, but it definitely worked for me. Since the p1 is so good I didnt realize how much picture quality I was actually losing. Im gonna blame Optoma for making such a incredible projector hahahahhaa Thanks man!!!
