I do admire people who appreciate analog recording. When used properly, and the equipment performing as well as it should, it's amazing the beautiful warm and soft, rich sound is totally awesome, and makes a nice finished recording, be it a vinyl record, audio CD, or MP3 file. Interesting as it sounds, people sometimes purchase old analog reel to reel recorders, and pay a professional to completely restore it, and from there extend the life of the machine by many more years. The music sample in this video sounded great both ways, but I liked the smooth sound of the analog tape version. This video is very fascinating, though I'm not an expert in studio recording. I used to be a projectionist at a movie theater when they used 35mm film, and this led to me having a few new interests, including sound recording, and film projection history. Even in this day and age, we can appreciate the older analog tape recorders and the amazing, but smooth sound they produce. Great for transferring to vinyl phonograph records also.

Thanks for your comments. Really interesting stuff. The old art of analog is fading away due to cheap digital gear, which is fantastic in its own way, but I also feel we need to embrace and preserve the beauty of true analog.

I bought one back in 1979 and had it upto 2016 my son now has it. and it works perfectly still today. Paid £449 at the time that was a lot of money back then but when you think it’s still working I think it’s money we’ll spent.

I'm pretty certain that TC399 is running too slow and either needs its flywheel bearings oiled or its motor-run capacitor replaced.

What makes you say that? The audio repro was spot on

I agree . I've just changed the motor run cap in my sony tc399. Its so much faster . That machine definitely looks much slower eh..

Hi Pete!) Hope you're doing great! I just got tc 399 in pretty good condition, sounds great but I I'm not enjoying the big amount of hiss, how you deal with it? And also do you increase high frequencies before you send audio on tape? I use ampex 641 new tape, I tried this tape on my friends akai gx266d and the results with the noise are much better so maybe you got some tricks you can share with me) thanks

@@NEEDSHES interesting. Hiss can be as a result of a lot of things. From cables to the electric supply / ground loops / cycle hum. But try demag'ing your head's first. You could always tey recording with the 399 at your friend's place. See if you get different results?!

Hi Pete, thanks so much for a great video. Amazing results, and great to see people pushing the beauty of analogue tape. I've just purchased one of these machines and it arrived today. Do you have any advice for maintaining the machine, such as calibrating it and demagnetising it, aside from getting it professionally serviced. I've seen a few things online about other tape machines but I was wondering if you had any recommendations specific to this one. Your machine sounds truly incredible - I was blown away by the fidelity of the tape mix. Thanks again!

Thanks. And glad to hear you bought one. Keep tape alive! In terms of de mag and setup, there's a few good guides online. Should be able to find them via a goog search. It's fairly simple when you know how. Good luck!

I dont know how anyone could think the digital version sounds better.

Analog will sound better 100% of the time, but sadly most listeners don't care, so producers just work in the easier digital domain

Hi, it is more natural sample.
