I'm trying to keep up with headphones and earbuds right now, amongst other content, so I'm trying different workflows and formats to see how I can streamline videos and make more of them so I can expand. Believe it or not, this video is a different format than in the past, and if it seems to do well, I think I'll be able to increase output a little bit more. We'll see :)

I recently purchased the Sony ULT Wear and I love it! No I am not someone who wants a ton of bass but I discovered with these headphones I can get the right amount of bass for me! I don't use the ULT button. Sony's sound signature is one of my favorites. At the time of posting this in Canada the Sony ULT is on sale for $200 and the XM5 is on sale for $400. I feel the sound on the ULT is close enough that I don't want to pay an extra $200 for it! Some of the headphones I tested were either not loud enough or some what muddy in sound and the bass was barely there! I do recommend trying them for yourself in a store and any other headphones you are interested in. It's important to find the sound quality and comfort on your head that's right for you!

I'm a Bose user, I can say Bose sound tuning is leaning towards relaxing neutral sound, detailed. meanwhile Sony's tuning is more bassy, like EDM song feels better on Sony. both are well-built imo, my Bose QC35ii is 5 years old and still kicking, my friend's XM3 is also the same and still alright.

Music producer here, got a pair. Just lift everything north of the 2K slider between 2 and 3 db and it's decently balanced. The bass is honestly pretty fun, sometimes I just wanna press a button and destroy the song I'm listening to. Of course I'd never mix out of them, I've got studio headphones and speakers for that. But like, I got 'em for $150 on sale, AnC is great, sound quality is great, just EQ to taste, set, and forget. I like 'em.

I went to the shop to test the ULT wear vs the XM4 because I'm hesitating between the 2 and if someone can share their experience that would be welcome but the conclusion I came to was: ULT WEAR: More confortable, more bassy even with ULT off which can really make you "merge in your own buble" specially when turning the Noise Cancelling on XM4: Feels more premium in quality overall, the sound is more "open"/"light" which makes you feel maybe less "overwhelmed" by the music and more "calm". I've always liked bassy, even in videogames (ik it's different but overall I've liked bassy headphones) yet here I'm still doubting which one to go for...

I had the ULT for like 5 months and they broke out of nowhere. I never used them for running or some outside activity, kept them in their case all the time and the broke really easily when I was trying to get them off me. Later I saw many guys that are complaining about them and this is quite an issue with the ULT model. But anyway really nice review and comparison!

Funny enough, you've confirmed the the Ults are for me and I would have hated the higher end XM5. I listen to Riddim, Dubstep, Industrial, and Electronic music... SICK! Not to mention I'll be able to make music on these things. Probably the best review I've seen for these headphones. Helped a lot.

@@keithpalacios9417Yes! I did, and they are the best headphones I’ve ever had. And I’ve had a lot. The bass is soooo amazing, and my brain is thoroughly blown with how clean the bass was. I did end up making my own eq in the app that basically handled sound through a multigenre playlist. Mic is definitely the least beastly thing about it. I have autism too, so it’s been a peace of mind with how good the anc works. It’s almost bizarre. Also love the pass through. Highly recommend.

Everything, I really do mean everything about the ULT Wear's is amazing. Sound, fit, battery, Active Noise Canceling is stellar, better than Beats Pro by a landslide. Levels of bass are awesome, they give a good uphff. One, single, issue. Build quality. My left hinge after 3 months cracked and broke 😦 I glued and taped them back together for now. Still working, but keep the hollow plastic build in mind. Side Note: I use them mainly wired into my Xbox controller. Noise canceling still works plugged in. You gotta hit the power button again to activate ANC.

I try to make videos for the masses, so I'm not one to measure frequency ranges. I'm also a mixing audio engineer, not an audiophile. My interest in frequency graphs are low compared to simply using my ears. There will be plenty of other great creators that will focus on that.

First of all I want to say that I just found your channel now. Secondly I want to say THANK YOU so much for this review. It was Outstanding. Been looking for this review comparison between the ULT Wear and the WH-1000XM5. So currently I'm using the Plantronics BackBeat Pro headphones for quite sometime now. Been looking at upgrading to the ULT Wear. Here's the thing though. As much as I love Deep BASS, I must say from my reaction to the sound test performed, ULT Off sounds far better than ULT 1 and even 2. ULT 2 is literally in your face BASS while everything else of the track you're listening to falls away, including the vocals of the artist singing/rapping. As for the ANC, Tranparency and Mic Test, both headphones are crazy close in offering the same levels of each. In fact, it seems the ULT Wear came out better over the XM5 in some of the tests which is rather a surprise considering the price difference between the two. Thanks again for this great video. I was gifted the ULTs for my birthday as I had hinted I wanted a new pair of headphones as my Beyerdynamic's were getting sad being 40 years old. As an audiophile and AES member I expected a nice pair with a flat response like my Spendor BC1's. Imagine my surprise getting these ULT's. The bass is ridiculous in ULT1 and ULT2. With ULT off it still has a lot of bass boost which can be adjusted from the app. It came with 10dB bass boost out the box! Even with a flat response set in the app the bass is all wrong. Perhaps these would suit Head Bangers?

This is exactly what i need i love almost all genres of music starting from heavy metal to hip hop. Most of the time I prefer bass bost and sometimes i prefer a flat eq. The ability to change eq without using a app is exactly what i need

Have these and find the sound to be great and very customizable. My GF already wants a pair after trying mine out. I had tried the Sony XM4 a few years ago but found they had too many issues to keep them - mainly a crackling in the right ear issue and too fragile with water. I ended going with the Soundcore QC35 which balance quality with value well but ultimately break and aren't the best at ANC or sound (I went through 2 pairs). These may be just as fragile as the XM4 but are more affordable and currently on sale for $178. The ANC is great. The bass boost is fun. No crackling in the ear other than the leather earcups shifting a bit. I think the earcups look a little ridiculously big and the clamping force is a bit more than im used too. I also think that seal allows the better ANC and possibly more sweating. Overall I think Im going to keep them because they make me excited to listen to my favorite songs and new ones.

I'm a long time enjoyer of the now quite old Sony h.ear MDR-100ABN which I have loved wearing a LOT working from home for about 6-7 years (I love the cocoon feeling), but they're wearing out now, sadly. I REALLY liked these for the money. So I'm in the market for replacements - going to stick with Sony specifically for their ANC and the comfort vs sound vs money value. This is the first I have seen of the new ULT range. Apart from the ULT2 setting (your Honda bass bin analogy is so on point, lol), I think since there's a €150ish difference between the XM5 and the ULT, I'd be happy enough with the latter for sure. From your review, I think the ANC sounds a tad better on the ULT, as does the call quality and also the bass/sound quality with no ULT, and ULT1. ULT2 is ridiculous. I hope they still have an app to setup the equaliser which looked great on the various other headphones for the past few years!

The ULT Wear reminds me of my MDR-XB950N1's with the Bass-Effect button, I loved those headphones but I soon after went ahead n got the WH-1000XM4's and haven't looked back since, was introduced to LDAC and haven't been the same since. Now recently picked up the WH-1000XM5's and I can confidently say they're a step up from the XM4's and really enjoy using them. Btw ULT1 is alright, still like that kinda rumble bass but ULT2 is ridiculous 😂 Sony shouldn't have added that!

The swipe controls make them feel like theyre even more then what i paid for them ( paid $148 at my local walmart on discount BNIB ) all around the quality is just top notch. That transparency mode on the ULT is sounding really good for a pair of $200 headphones (Not Apple or Bose level, but still good). It actually sounded a bit better than the one on the XM5 to me. That being said, I think you should check out the Crusher ANC 2 to see how they compare to it.

The better question is whether Sony is addressing the XM5's issues with comfort and sound. The sound felt unbalanced for me. It didn't satisfy me. Also, it hurts me to wear them very quickly on my head. This is why I switched to the Momentum 4 but the Momentum 4 is relatively heavy and I need to use an adapter to get aptX Adaptive on all devices. LDAC has a wider spread. And wait a second, Sony released the XM5 last year. The XM4 launched 2020, the XM3 was released in 2018. Why do you assume a release of the XM6 this year?

I went back to Bestbuy yesterday to sample the Sony XM4, XM5 , ALT, Momentum 4 and Accentum. All of them have a wider soundstage, but lacks the details that I used to hear when I had my few Grado headphones (SR225,325,PS500, Alessandro Grado, GS series) . I discover Marshall Monitor 3 ANC for a mixture of Grado sound signature combined with larger soundstage.

So if your priority is listening to music in the highest quality and taking calls through your headphones, xm5 is the best. For anything else and an affordable price, ult looks like a great deal

One of the most important things that most ULT reviews (including this one) fails to mention is that the bass levels on the two ULT button options are ADJUSTABLE in the app. I’ve seen so many reviewers talk about how “ULT2 is too much” and the like. Well, you have ULT2 set to +10, then. In the app, you can set it to +1 if you want. It’s all USER DEFINED. The button essentially makes it so you have 2 bass level presets (the way you want them set in the app), available to toggle through via the button. That’s the selling point of this. I have the XM4’s and also just picked these up. Honestly, I like these better, for a fraction of the price.

There was a Black Friday sale and I went in to try both. I was very surprised about the ULT’s audio quality, and it even seemed more open than the XM4. It wasn’t quite the XM5s, but for the sale at $150 it was a giant bargain.

Sound is clearer on the Bose. They trade blows on other features. I’d keep what you have. No need to spend more money than you have to, tbh.

Btw even though I’ve heard from people that Bose has one of the top tier noise cancelling tech in their headphones but imo I still kinda feel like QC45s can actually have a bit more of it? I have the ult wear and went to compare the nc with the xm5s and honestly it's close I couldn' tell a huge difference, I like my ult wears however I've noticed that on some songs that are already reaaally base heavy that the base does break/crack a little and always at the same parts of the song I think it's cuz of how the song is mixed and not cuz of the headphones but I'm not sure.

Even at the same price, i still picked ult wears lol. The bass is too much fun and thats all i care about😂. I listened to both in the sony store and went "nope, not enough boom with xm5s".

With ULT off, these sound decent. What I am waiting on are your EQ settings for these. Or is it too much bass even at ULT 1?

They're decent with them off. I'm not sure if I'll spend time on the EQ for these. If there's enough demand, I might, but it takes me about a week or so to tweak and tune, and I'd rather make more reviews of all the other products coming out right now/that I have. We'll see!

If you’re gonna get the XM5, it’s definitely money well spent without a doubt. I’ve been using mine for almost a year now, still as good as new, fit and finishing is gold standard. But the new ULT seems pretty good for half the price, getting a Sony headphone is the smartest choice even on IOS.

it can be your earpads are degrading over time you use them, hance creating a worse passive isolation on your ears, compared to fresh out of the box, sadly.

Great Review. I hate the look of the XM5s and my XM4s have started succumbing to wear and tear, so I've been occasionally looking for replacements. Saw these and searched for reviews... doesn't look like they will be a good fit, but at least I didn't spend hundreds of dollars to find out. Thank you so much. I work from home and we have a farm nearby. Ihave an existing headset with ANC feature but it is not enough to filter the rooster and dogs barking and other farm animal noises. I was looking into the wg1000xm5 but can anyone atest of the dogs barking can still be heard during meetings?

Can I use these headphones while working out in the gym and do the earcups get damaged due to sweat? Or is it normal to get sweaty in the ear area while watching a movie or at home? Do you get sweaty after wearing it for a long time?

I wonder if the issue with the microphone still there or not. Got this issue since xm3 and xm4. If you connect to the laptop, with mic on - for online meeting or gaming mode, the sound becomes really bad quality.

I can't speak for the xm5's so take this video and others experiences as a judgment for that however I can say the ult wear's have very impressive noise cancellation. To perhaps give an example that most can associate with, if you are on a coach with alot of people, the noise cancellation completely silences the engine, and any voices are nearly completely muted, occasionally you might hear voices from a video someone Is playing or if they have their phone call on speaker (not sure why but this kind of thing can get picked up just a little by the anc), with some music on you won't hear anything of your background so really good if you commute via bus or train, but also great if you live near a road and want to tune out the sound to listen to some tunes
