Sony VX2000 Video Review

Me boasting about my cam. No, but seriously, it's to provide some insight into what this camera is like. May be boring for some, but I posted this review upon request. So shut yo mouf.

I own a Vx 2000 also with the mk2 Its so dope. I have one tip for you which will save your chip. When you film in the daylight try to always have your ND filter on 2. This will reduce the glare and stuff and will also save the chip from wearing out from the brightness of the sun. I didn't figure that out until last year and My chip on my camera ist kinda worn but it still works great and yeah these are hella durable Ive fallen on the camera whilst in my Lowe Pro pack a few times

This was my dad's dream camera back in the day. I have no idea he wanted a high end camera that even some reality TV shows used... just so record the family doing normal, everyday things. Luckily, he ended up just buying a consumer level Mini DV camcorder for about $500 at Best Buy back in 2004.

im not sure...ive never filmed in snowy conditions before, but im guessing it would be pretty bright as well.

Good review, but still don't know whether to wait for the Bayoring for the Mk1 to come into stock or just get the Mk2 instead???? What do ya reckon

@amm362 It connects to your computer through firewire. It's mini dv so you have to wait for your software to record the data to the HDD not like other cameraa that make an mpeg that you can drag off of the camera! However the vx2100 handles amazing under various source lighting condidtions!

you insert your mini dv tape into the tape slot on your capture camera, connect it to your computer with a firewire cable, and capture your footage with whatever software you normally use...

@amm362 yup, you can put it on tape mode, so you will need tapes. and you have the memory mode, then you put in a memory card.

@MDskater12, no it is a vx2000. the vx2000 came out before the vx2100 and the vx2100 has a more grey colored body and the vx2000 is silver and also has a lcd

You dont particularly need the LCD screen when filming. It only really comes in handy when checking footage

@EdgarRodriguez97 the firewire port is probably burned out in the camera. same happened to mine on the first day i had it. you have to get a cheap mini dv camera to play back onto the computer with.

Ok that makes sense. I have been offered a VX but the firewire port is broken on it. Does that mean that there's no other way to get it onto the computer?

@Xevays i have a vx1k, and a friend of mine has a 2000. the chips/ 3ccd sensors in it are bigger in the vx2. this means the colors are going to be much more saturated and rich if u white balance correctly. so yes u can make them close but stock/without using color correction the vx1k will give u better colors if u use it correctly. not tryin to get into an arguement but i just saw your comment and figured i would tell u why vx1's have better colors.

but the thing most people dont know is the custom preset button or setting and you can just set the custom preset on ur vx camera to rediculous colors ..thats what i did for my friend and hes been filmin longer than me..or you can just get a Fx7 and get a all around great quality camera..idk thats just my opinion

@lal5555f You connect a firewire to the camera and open a video editing program on the computer and capture the footage from the tape through the cam by playing back footage. I would get a cap cam which is a cheap camera for capturing since capturing is bad for the heads.

is the editing hard like going threw delting stacks and shit .... cause with tape do you have to play the whole time the tape runs or can you keep pressing start and stop while filming ??

varies wich one u get either the dvx100, dvx100a, or the dvx100b (best) i had a dvx100 and it sucked. but the dvx100b kicks ass.

well i found an 80's camera in my closet and wanted to check it out do you think it would have a firewire. i have sony vegas would that work? what do you mean by capture cam and heads?

it records on to mini DV cassettes, so all you need to do is plug your camera (with the tape in it of course) into your computer with a firewire cable. Then just capture your footage with your editing software of choice.

But so many folks says the GL2 has bad colors, but I think that might be cause they don't know how to set the manual settings to the very best colors... I am a noob to semipro-cameras, but if I'm gonna buy a GL2 I definitely will learn how to set the colors to it's very best. I live in Sweden and no one is selling a used vx2100 here, so I think I have to go with the Gl2 (XM2 in Europe)... Yes or no? :o

can we put the colour debate between the vx1 and the vx2 away? The vx2 can pretty much do whatever colours you want and with editing nowadays the small colour difference that is perceived can be changed super easily with whatever you're using.

yeah actually, pretty heavy, if youre used to filming with a smaller camera. when i first started filming with it, i would get a sore wrist, but after a few weeks of using it, i got used to it.

no it was used. i was so surprised. i never had a 3CCD cam or a MiniDV cam before and i was gonna buy a GL1 but i saw the VX2 on craigslist for 600 and i just HAD to buy it.

I think having a heavier camera would be better because when you're filming with a really like camera you can have less control and the camera can shake more.

So, the VX2100 is better than the 2000 because the 2100 have better colors and a record button on the handle its pretty nice to film some lines, for the fisheye with the MK2 you don't need any adaptator rings because its a 58mm thread and the VX21 or 2000 are 58mm thread but if you want to adapt an MK1 (because the MK1 have a wider angle) you must to buy a bayoring its a 52mm to 58mm bayonett mount, i hope i help you :) if you want a cheaper cam but very good you can buy a Sony TRV900 or 950.

the mk2 was designed for the vx2000 and vx2100, the mk1 was designed for the vx1000, but you can fit a mk1 on a vx2000 or 2100 by using a custom bayo ring, other differences are that the mk1 is wider but has vig, and the mk2 on a vx2000 doesnt have vig

"low light filming" I hate that term. All that means is that it has a higher ISO range, a larger aperture, or a larger shutter speed range. And a quick tip to all you people wondering how to get DOF shots. Larger aperture (the closer to f/0.0)= shallower DOF.
