Thank you for the great, detailed review!! I have always preferred "single-purpose devices" (i.e. seperate mp3 player, ebook reader etc). I currently have the NWZ-X1060 and had several generations of other Sonys before - I am a fan of their walkman range. Due to the price I was a bit on the fence whether to get the X1 or not but your review pushed me firmly on the "yes" side as it removed the last doubts. Also agree on your comment re. headphones. For serious cans you might need an additional amp and that would make it a very immobile unit for me.

I was looking at this as one of many reviews while looking for a nice 'airy' player for my Shure 846. And to be honest this review doesn't address many points of this player. For one - it's Android and super easy to use and is super comfortable, the buttons are super easy to pick and thanks to little dots can be used even through pocket fabrick and it looks and feels awesome. about the sound - when I used the standard player I felt unedrwhelmed. All the sound was there but the 'precission' wasnt. And don't take me wrong the responsivness is superb, the punchiness, it's super balanced and all, just not as 'airy' as I was looking for. Untill I got the Onkyo HF player with the full DSD 3/6 MHz upscaling. I'm jusing the 3MHz and I don't feel any difference above but the precission and the details are there now. No matter MP3, Flac, DSD it just works and is easy and when inhouse I love using it with Sennheisers 598 it's just such a nice thing. Ah - and I was using iPhones and not one comes close and the sound is 'flat' and lacks responsivness on them. Definitely superb music player and available for a fraction of the original price these days.

Really informative review, really helped me make that life-changing decision to get the ZX1. Hell, I almost gave up on waiting for this and was planning to drop for 1.) Z2 2.) Geek Wave 32 + Fostex TH-600 (why not TH-900? The TH-600 was going for US$ 599.99 on massdrop). To be honest, the second option (which I really gravitated to) became a no-go 'cause apparently the retail partner of massdrop didn't want international shipping...only pansy domestic shipping in the US. After a minute of sheer dismay, lo and behold a reputable supplier of A/V products in my area appeared with the option of pre-ordering the ZX1 for 62800 yen (converted price). I was still on the fence between my first option and this so I tried to see if the ZX1 was worth it, and the current seems to be going in favour of the ZX1 so thanks, really appreciated the review

Not a bad review. About your H3s, what tips are you using? As they look like they could be the wrong way around... As in the rounded side should be inserted into the ear. Myself I've stuck with ex700s with for my z1060 for 5years now. But am considering a zx1 or a17 with a h2 or h3 in the future.

Great review! Currently i use MDR-1RNC Headphones, but from what you were saying about the devices MW output, does it really make that much of a difference in sound quality? Would i just be better sticking to a smartphone and not be able to notice a difference?

Didn't look that spectacular when first released in 2014 - Sony's first attempt into hi-res/hi-fi portable market.. I wasn't impressed either.. But after a few iterations eg. Signature Series WM1A & WM1Z (in 2016) and mid-tier model, ZX300 (in 2017) with 4.4mm balanced port, I could see where Sony was heading to.. I must say, today in 2020, Sony DAPs are impressive & unique compared to other DAPs like Astell & Kern & chi-fi brands such as FiiO, iBasso, HiBy etc.. BTW I currently have ZX300 and iBasso DX160 - warm & neutral which complement each other, the best of both worlds in mid-tier category.. Well done & thank you, Sony..

Colkilt... Greetings! I think its off topic but I just need your opinion... I've noticed that my zx1, the aluminum frame and the LCD screen are not fitted...Normally, at bottom right corner near Walkman logo and upper right corner....there is a small (noticeable) gap between the frame and the LCD screen...vertically... Is it factory defect? Backlight leak can be noticed thru that opening (unfitted frame and LCD)... For that case, is it under warranty? My device is imported from Japan... Thank you....

Hi Colkilt, nice review mate. Just wondering if you could comment on the volume levels the player can output. I was thinking of pre-ordering so i get the headphones bundled, but i did read in another review that the only thing they found of concern was the max volume on the player was a bit low. They said it would be fine in a quiet environment but might struggle in a busy street setting. What are your thoughts on this? And excuse my ignorance but can an issue like this be fixed with a software update to the player, or would this be a hardware limitation?

Hi, I have a question: When you're listening to music with the standard walkman music player app there will displayed "HR" on the left bottom corner if you're listening to High-Res audio. Is there also displayed "mp3" or "16bit" or something like this if you're listening to a mp3 or a lossless file from a CD?

What software do you use to play music from your computer using the internet? BubbleuPnP and? Also do you need to root the device to use that feature? Also would you recommend using external media player apps like PowerAmp on the ZX1 or stick to the dedicated player? I'm worried about the settings that might not appear in 3rd party software such as the ability to configure DSEE, XLoud etc.

Any DLNA server will do. From a NAS, a Foobar2000 plugin, SubSonic/MadSonic server etc. Hi-Res meaning max WAV/flac-24b/192KHz is ok but compared to FiiO X5 that does full DSD (1bit-2.8GHz)has a proper amp / coax out and costs half as much... If you have NO LIMIT on your $$$$ for portable audio, go directly for AK240.

I was able to change the language to English but you were right, some of the native apps are in Japanese. I am currently transferring music to the player and noticed that the cover art transfers are intermittent at best. Some of the album covers for a particular artist will transfer and others will not. Have you experienced anything like this?

Sony Xperia Z3 also give you Hi Res audio and it is a real phone so you can listen to your air music anywhere you go. Sound quality just about the same since the amplifier in the ZW1 was not that great at all.

What is the point of Hi Res Audio? I just downloaded the WAV format of my favourite track (Armin Van Buuren - Serenity (Radio Edit)) and played it right after the mp3 VBR file. I heard no difference, jst that WAV file is much less volume. I use iPod Classic 160 gb and AKG K451.

but ipod has that 160 gb hard drive, of whic I have 75 gb full. I am afraid that the X5 will not handle this sice it supports only 64 gb memory cards. The sound quality is great pairing to mdr1r but I don't truly feel the bass...is it the headphone or the device zx1 itself...previously im using monster inspiration with my f806 and I feel the bass.... Also, from specs online, zx1 should have 1gb ram...but when I checked mine under setting/application...it is only 698mb total (use+unused)... Can I have your opinion on these matters?... Thank you

Mp3 is a great and wise invention. It takes incredibly less space than regular PCM files and sounds just as great. No you don't hear the difference. ESPECIALLY when you are in a noisy environment like pretty much all the time when using your portable music player.

With ref to what he says about this not having sufficient current to drive some high end headphones. Grado headphones are very easy to drive and I suspect this player would sound excellent with Grado SR325e. Outside of home I guess you'd want to be using some quality ear-phones.I still think it's over priced though.

I desperately need a user manual in print for my NW-NX1. I bought it on ebay, and it arrived with nothing else than a charging cable. The main language on the player itself is Korean or Japanese(?) and, since I am from Norway, those languages are not very understandable(!) to me. Until now I have just found a manual that is readable on the web, and, is, as far as I can understand, only to be printed page by page. That will cost me one days work - and there is a serious possibility that I will loose track of what I have and have .not printed. Anyone that has a solution?

As far as big headphones goes with big dropped in audio quality issue. Most of the headphones goes, it's around 35 OHM should properly work with this device. You will see around $500 very large headphones that has quarter inch stereo jack, usually around 200 to 400 OHM, you needed power amp. to boost your big headphones. The 1970's old headphones won't properly work with this device because it has way too high OHM plus it's too heavy and it hurt, if for long listening. Children headphones is around 1,000 OHM to save their young hearing with such of low volume output. Most likely for SONY Professional MDR-7506 headphone will match with this device. I see several Radio and Television crews use exactly same model (MDR-7508) $100 headphones instead of THOUSANDS of dollar headphones.

I suggest just getting a cheap sony device. All sony mobile devices come with some kind of music enhancement software. Personally i have a Sony Xperia E which i almost purely use for music. It has a built-in sound equaliser that can make almost any headphones sound clear and heavy in bass. I know it doesn't have all the gizmos that this has, but it still is good for music lovers in HD.

I have to disagree with you. No cheap headphones can be acceptable with this high end audio walkman. This Player is also an Analog to Didital Converter and plays in High Res which requires a High Resolution Headphone to acquire the best sound possible. (SONY MDR !R MK2) Hig Resoliution Headphone model.

drdj69 Sure the actual cost to manufacture a ZX1 might be $150 as you estimate, but you have to factor in markups between each stage of the supply chain. The OEM, distributors, and retailers have to make a profit. Sony could bundle in a decent pair of headphones. But that'll just increase the retail price of ZX1. Everything has a cost attached to it. There are users of these high-end music players who insist on using headphones that are $300 plus and higher in order to get the best possible experience. It's more flexible for the customer to have the choice to purchase their own headphones, as the current Sony headphones selection may not suit all tastes.

i know it needs a High Res headphone , I'm just trying to say sony should add a pair of High res headphones with it (not cheap ones), my feeling is they soon will, i agree with all the makeups n distributors but the fact is they still make a lot of profit and they will make enough profit even if they add a descent High res headphones . i never knew sony had a fanboy club lol. relax guys. i do own lotta sony products, and recently i bought the MDR-1RBT which was about $350 its pretty good but not good enough i expected bit more out of it. maybe it will only sound good when paired with a ZX1.

drdj69 I believe you're missing the point. If as you mention the MDR-1RBT aren't performing to your expectations or if they just barely meet them. Would having something of that price range ($350) bundled with the ZX1 satisfy you? Probably not. There are litterally hundreds of different headphones from brands other than Sony available on the market. Some are fairly affordable and cheaper than the MDR-1RBT that have been reported to pair well with the ZX1. Why do you insist that Sony: 1) Make this choice for you. 2) Be forced to live with it if you end up not liking the bundled headphones/ earphones. Even if the bundled headphone were offered at a discount. The principle is that you are spending extra on something that you may have wanted to purchase in the first place. But of course if you originally intended to purchase said hypothetical bundled headphone, then more power to lucky you.

Not the best review. To me it sounds like you don't have a sufficient amount of knowledge about audio playback. Firstly you point out how this is an expensive device that you'd expect people with high quality ear phones should use with, then you say that its dumb to use high quality headphones. I'm sure Sony wouldn't just totally rule out people who use high quality headphones for a device like this. I use my Audio Technicas with my portable device, on public transport or through the city and i don't see it as a "problem". Maybe have a little bit of background or understanding of devices like these before you give an arrogant review.

Yes. But it's all about sound quality. There are some phones that can play "Hi Res Audio" but won't sound as the Walkman or any other Audiophile player because the audio chip inside the phone simply sucks. Plus if your using the earbuds that came with your phone and tried to listen to the Walkman, you won't hear the Hi Res Audio as those earbuds can't produce the sound for it. I know it sounds confusing and expensive, but that is why this Walkman was made for music lovers. Just put it this way. Your phone is meant for calls and this Walkman is meant for music.

Bad bad bad move by Sony....Sony has the WORST decision/marketing I have ever seen in my life, this is Not a worthy product, even if it was $99 I would not buy it, look at the size of it. Its bulky and ugly, and there is very little gain in Audio compared to one of the "lower end" mp3 players which probably only audiphiles will pick up, but majority of the everyday users dont hear that stuff.
