Well, 8 track is a lot worse than cassette for everyday music listening, but it is so much better suited for some special usecases. Like all those automated toys to play back audio while storing cue point and/or digital data on other tracks, with no need to rewind.

Nobody you actually want to do Karaoke with will ever SAY they're a fan of Karaoke. People who say they're fans invariably take it seriously and actually sing well, so everybody around them goes "nuh-huh, no way I'm singing after THEM" and the whole night is ruined. You gotta go with those who aren't outspoken fans but can be talked into going and will only sing after a drink or three. :D

Many times at group parties in Japan, the revelers will get a bingo game going for laughs. That reminds me of my German class in high school. They had a language lab with stations that had cassette decks, each station had a double-muff headphone with a built in mic, and you would often be paired with someone else either adjacent to you or across the room (you could speak to each other) to practice phrases or answers to questions on the pre-recoded cassette. I believe there was a second tape deck that would record as well. The teacher could remote in and listen to you and chime in to help. The teacher would listen from a central control unit at the head of the classroom and be able to listen to each student or pairs of students, you didn't know when the teacher was listing. So if you weren't doing anything, they would certainly cut in to ask why or if you didn't understand the session. But you didn't know who the teacher was listing to at the time, so it was always to your advantage to keep going no matter how bad you were butchering it up. The cassette decks were all remote controlled from the central unit, so they would all rewind or fast-forward together in unison, (rather impressive) I believe they must have used a timecode on one of the stereo pairs as they had a LED real-time counter and they seemed frame accurate as they always hit the mark right before the start of the next session. This was late 80's brand new system, as the high school just had a major renovation the year before. I wonder how many years they used it tell some digital equivalent came about.

Oh man, I remember this system. Was it made by Roland? I was at a school in the North of England that had a 'language lab' fitted circa 1989. Truly weird.

@@charlesbridgford254 I was also at a comprehensive school here in the north-east of England that, when I arrived in 1977, had a cassette-based language lab that had all those cubicles. It was never used. When I asked my German teacher why not, he told me that pupils had damaged the machines. But I always wanted to try it out and never could.

@@marcusdamberger the one school I went to in the 1980s had a language lab like that, but they were intended for kids that had various handicaps that made it difficult for them to learn spoken language. It was never used for "ordinary" kids

@@charlesbridgford254 Yes, I believe they were Roland! Had black fascia, pretty sure the teacher could lock you out of the controls at times. Roland must have sold this system everywhere. I wonder who put together the lesson tapes, they were professionally done with native speakers and sometimes had sound effects depending on the content. Must have been installed around 87'/88'. Tended to use it at least once a month.

This might sound corny, but your channel is the only channel that gives me nostalgia for the good old days during the covid pandemic. Sitting in my quiet bedroom with no traffic whizzing by on the busy road next to my window. Keep up the good work.

A few thoughts.... 1) Sony should use this design in a Bluetooth speaker, but make it stereo/Atmos, etc. 2) PUPPETS♥!!

I think it is probably impossible to make an acoustically properly performing stereo model with these 360° speakers. It would probably create a huge mess with the phase relation of the two channels with the listener at different angles and distance from the unit.

I have a Tribit Stormbox Pro that has a similar form factor (a little smaller, but the same basic shape). It plays in stereo (separate left and right drivers with two passive radiators) and also allows linking a second Stormbox Pro in "stereo more" (each speaker operates in mono, one as Left Channel, the other as Right Channel) and also a "party mode" (both play in mono but output the same audio) so it is certainly possible to do. I don't have a second one to test that functionality, but I assume it's well-implemented, judging by how well it works as a single speaker. Stereo separation is also very good. At $120 on everybody's favorite online vendor, it's not cheap, but it is able to crank up pretty loud before distorting, and louder than more-expensive offerings from the likes of JBL. Also, it puts out surprisingly-good sound, great bass even with Bass Boost off, and better-than-expected treble response as well. If you put it in the right spot (like a few inches away from a corner of the room) it blows many bookshelf stereo systems out of the water. As an added bonus, it doesn't have the ubiquitous "Ze Bleu Toof Dewice Is Riddy To Pal" voice prompts. It can also use its internal battery to charge devices (albeit slowly) during playback.

I love the design of this device, as well as the color. Modern device often don't have a lot of scope for interesting design, as the guts are simple and most things can just be basic slabs.

At the time, musical devices made use of two IC called BBD (Bucket Brigade Device), namely SAD512 and SAD1024. The first was capable of 512 mS of delay, and the second provided 1024 mS of delay. They were fully analog IC, very expensive and very prone to fault, just like the Dolby compander ICs. Very nice find, especially for being still operative after 42 years. Thank you, Anthony
