Sony XAV-AX150 Double DIN car stereo - The only headunit to buy for under $400!

I'm pretty amazed with the sound quality of this unit. For $400, I'd say it's good, I paid $200 and for that it's a steal. The menu is fast, it never slows down, just works. The display is alot better than I expected, even looks clean in bright sunlight. It definitely has enough power if you prefer to run some fronts off the stereo itself. I'm just running 2 fosgate components off the Sony and subs off a 1000w alpine amp and the Sony can crank loud and keep up with 2 10 inch RF punch subs. As far as the wireless android auto, that's no issue for me. I use android auto plugged into my android device and that works beautifully, and I prefer wired for Sq, but when I unplug the deck switches to BT and continues to play. I'd prefer the Android auto run on my phone or tablet anyway so it's a non issue for me. The only real downside is the preouts are 2v instead of 4v and 4v would produce better SQ, but I haven't listened to a higher end unit side by side yet and the bass from this little Sony is loud and clear.

Im not that impressed with the audio quality. It’s okay, I’d give it a 7/10 as a audio enthusiast. Sounds good to a normal person, only okay for me. I installed 3 head units in the same vehicle, a older Sony Xav 64bt was a 8/10 for sound quality and a Alpine CDA 9825 from 2004 was a 9/10. I also noticed that the radio signal strength was much stronger on the Alpine. I would get channels that didn’t even come through on the Sony. The Sony does look very nice, almost Factory in the dash. The sound just doesn’t come close to Alpine.

My biggest gripe with this unit is the backup camera section. It does not trigger the screen when you put it in reverse. You have to hit the home button and rear camera button to show the backup camera.

You must not have your reverse wire connected right or something because mine comes on as soon as I put it in reverse

I figured it out. I had used a T-harness and interface to keep steering controls and other info on info screen. I found a video to help figure it out missing instructions for adding camera to all this extra wiring. Works now.

Double din mated to a single din unit lost a sale for Sony I was considering this radio, but the double din space I have has a lot of room and making that thing stable will be a pain in the ass so glad I saw this looking for a good double din that is not mated to a single unit body.

You should have no problem with any major manufacturers dash kit. The single DIN chassis makes it much easier to install.

Unfortunately there is not a retention harness for that vehicle. You will either have to cut the factory plug and figure out power ground and signal or replace the camera.

You buy an RCA splitter and run normal RCAs, they all work and do the same thing. It doesn't matter which is Red or White, the signals are identical.

I have the Sony XAV-AX100 (discontinued). This is the same stereo head unit. No new features and Sony has in the past not been very forthcoming with firmware updates, leaving many users with a $400 brick. The official Sony forums are full of customer complaints regarding the older models. I see no reason why this one would be any differemt. Great review but I won't be purchasing Sony again. Their quality just isn't what it used to be.

1) The audio dac in those Chinese units aren't good. If you're updating a little civic or Corolla and you don't mind taking a slight drop in audio quality. Then fine. But Sonys dac has those units beat 2) Risky..these models might break in 3 months and you won't have support from your dealer. At least sony gives you a year of warranty

Look at our Audio tests on many of the cheap radios and they frequency response is terrible and the RCA outputs are garbage.
