@@swetanksinghshekhar You are kinda both wrong, the lens is made by Apple, what you are meaning is the sensor. And the sensor in most smartphones (incuding Apple) is some of the Sony IMX line, except for those 64 mpix or 108 mpix sensors made by Samsung. And the exmor in Xepria(s) is exclusive for this phone for now, and it is the top of the line Sony mobile sensor (although they are making a 1" mobile sensor!). But that sort of misses the point. The difference between apple and sony is the sw. Apple does everything for you, and the camera app basically does automatic photostacking, which in itself is nothing new, and it is not the best practice for every situation (which is also a downfall of the apple camera, as you can't turn it off). While Sony gives you the full control over the HW, so if you have a basic knowledge of photography, Sony absolutely stomps over Apple. There's video by James Lavish comparing both, and the images from the PhotoPro app are, well without competition in smartphone world.

iPhones tends to really oversaturate colours but in terms of dynamic range and level of detail it just seems ahead of Sony. 0:59 the middle is noticeably more blurry 1:13 the iphone captures detail on the petals that simply is not there on the Sony. 3:09, 3:18 , 3:28, ... Sony's ultrawide seems to get more details in and just does it better without oversaturation. 3:58 that telephoto is super unimpressive. It doesn't even give of a good enough vibe. Basically unacceptable for a phone this expensive. 4:47 while I think it makes for a better looking photo in this scenario, i doubt that this brightness would look good on a human. 4:57 the edges are rough on Sony, almost as if it needs some kind of anti aliasing D: in the video department, they seem identical trading blows with ultrawide footage seeming superior. The front camera is a big rip on the Sony though. 10:28 this bad blur effect makes it look like some kind of halo effect on the sony. 10:47 this problem just seems to persist?

For daylight stills there really isn't much competition, here: the Sony images looked more natural, had more depth and interest in pretty much every shot. Computational photography has a very depressing tendency to flatten your image out, making it very difficult to frame a subject and use the image to pull the eye to that subject. Everything is in focus and lit meaning that nothing is standing out. It's like a bad painting. Having that control to capture depth places Sony in the lead. Sony is also producing images with far better colour accuracy. No question: Sony wins the stills round, here. Maybe not flawless victory but a convincing one.

Nice comparison as usual, watched it to the end. I'm not a iphone fan, I chose android any day, but I'm also a honest person when it comes to these things. The iPhone won hands down in detail, sharpness & dynamic range. Even when you zoomed in on the still photos, you clearly saw the images from the iPhone were more detailed & sharper, Sony may have more natural colors but that means nothing to if they aren't as sharp & detailed as the competitions. & i cant seem to understand, sony claimed that they put in so much work & upgrades to the camera on the xperia 1 ii, but obviously those upgrades were just to add in more controls, because the end product (image quality) hasn't changed much, they're still behind the competitions in things like exposure, sharpness, detail, dynamic range & OIS... The footage from a sony will look ok when not compared, but once you put it beside the footage from another flagship competition brand, you see the weaknesses. You can't go adding all these fancy manual controls unless you work on getting the end product (image quality) up to the standard where it stands up to or even beat the competitions. & as the manufacturer of other brands camera sensors, the other brands shouldn't be getting it right over sony every year. I just don't get it with xperia.

@troy55684 жыл бұрын
That's what you'd get when you rely on the software more than to yourself when it comes to producing great images and videos. The Xperia is already catered to those that are creative enough to fiddle with the settings and get much better results that no iPhone can match. Well, I guess if you prefer to be lazy than to learn something about productivity.
@f4nkyy4 жыл бұрын
Sony is definitely not behind the competition in pure image detail and sharpness (and never was) - Just compare the Xperia XZ2 shots on the GSMArena Image Comparison Tool: The 19/23 MP sensors delvered much better detail and sharpness back then and still can hold up, IF its under good lighting conditions! The XZ2 even in low light if you keep the ISO low. Only recently, since they switched to 12 MP resolutions, they are focussing more on speed (20fps) and low light performance, than on pixel-peep detail. Sonys Steadyshot back in 2015 (EIS) was miles ahead to the competitions OIS. They are not "still behind", they only got behind the last 3 years in terms of Image Stabilization. Further, you are confusing sensor "dynamic range" with software enhanced, stacked HDR-Image output, where sony isnt as aggressive and leaves the user still some room for adjusting the exposure by yourself, with the goal to produce an honest image, no overprocessed garbage. The more detail and sharpening you see on the iphone it achieves just by automatic image stacking/bracketing, but that also can look overdone and artificial in some cases... I also wished sony would add another camera with at least a 64mp sensor, but the quick 20fps burst 12 MP shooter is the more versatile tool in the end...
@AndrewSmith-yy4sd4 жыл бұрын
@@f4nkyy I understand fully what you're saying, & this would go for the small minority of ppl who edit images after taking them with a mobile camera. But I was referring to images straight out of the camera, no editing. I understand that Sony made the xperia 1 ii for ppl who's willing to always edit a image they take from their cellphone most times if not everytime. But you have to remember that this is still a cellphone, something that you'll have on you 24/7's for when you wana capture that quick instant moments that you'd like to post then & there, so it's good that they offered that capability to edit, but they should've also enhanced the auto mode capabilities for those quick moments. Not everytime you'll be in a position to edit a picture to get it to posting quality. Remember, this is still a cellphone, the majority will just use this as point & shoot. Not speaking against them enhancing the manual capabilities the way they did, that's all good. But don't just leave the auto modes at such mediocre levels. I understand that phones like iPhone, Samsung, huawei may use some computational magic to get thier images as stunning as they are, which is also sometimes not accurate in colors, but what the hell, they're stunning, complete, full of details, dynamic range, no overexposure, sharp & ready to share. I honestly don't mind the slight inaccurate colors as long as the image got everything else going for it.

@@AndrewSmith-yy4sd @Andrew Smith Well, no offence, pictures with full and punchy, saturated colors, lots of (fake) dynamic range (HDR) and nicely sharpened really are stunning, even better when one doesn't need to do any work for these pictures. It's convienient and for the quick moments, i can absolutely understand that. I for my part have learned the weaknesses of sony phones and therefore i got used to adapt the settings according to the scene i want to shoot. But i understand that sony should finally fix all their software quirks and weak spots, to be honest there are situations where even i am fed up with it :D What sickens me is, that sony(ericsson) had at least those early scene detection "AI" way before the competition, they already did HDR in auto mode back in 2012 on the Xperia V / T Series. But they never really got credit for it, everyone headed to Samsung, HTC or Apple devices back then, even if sony made the first waterproof Flagships with stereo speakers and stereo microphones. It just made sense to choose sony for the best media/photo experience (bravia engine and so on) But they never really made it because of bad marketing and business decisions and already then there were some quirks in the camera software (how i hated the 1080px limited panorama..) And they just stopped improving those scene detection/AI modes and completely missed the HDR hype bandwagon, some bad product decisions and they were completely forgotten by most people. Its just that they never really got credit for their early achievements, even if one could reach the best and most detailed results with their 19/23MP shooters until 2018, if one knew how to work around the quirks and how to use manual mode or which photography style to avoid. Only because the auto mode was bad people thought that the whole camera or worse, the whole phone would be bad, which they really weren't. But now they have a new chance with the head start of the xperia1ii and i also can see that they really need to improve the camera software/AI computational photography especially the forgotten HDR on front cam video, portrait mode or the lens change quirks and making steady shot technology really worth its name again. I even hope they will ad a higher res sensor again for improved sharpness/detail when it's needed. Until then even i know that current xperia phones are not to recommend for the (auto shoot) masses for now.

The Sony has faster focus, it's just that its hardware limits it's focusing distance than the iphone due to physics. Also, I can't believe that Apple has also joined the punchy-color bandwagon.

The biggest issue that sony has is not their phone or the camera. The biggest problem what Sony mobile has is their camera software. From the xperia z to z1 to xperia xz premium to xperia 1, I always had a problem with the camera. It's wasn't sharp as their rival. But eyy I didn't give a fck, I always used sony mobile as my media player for music and their 4k resolution video. And not to mention their stamina mode is 👌🏽 I hope one day their alpha department help them out...

Win by iphone. Great sharpness and contrast. I see along the comments xperia gives true to life natural colors but the truth is, color is one of the easiest parameter to manipulate. While clarity and sharpness cant be much improved from a lesser output. So you can make iphone's shots make true to life in colors but you cant give 1ii shots more detail and sharpness
@timaustin20004 жыл бұрын
But the iPhone is over-sharp. Quite clearly. And while you can dial colour in post, you can't dial it accurately because you're no longer there to see what it was really like. A photographer looks for a natural image to enhance later not an unnatural image to tone back.

iPhone 11 Pro Max wins, and it not surprise for me, because i very well know xperia camera problems, like highlights clipping .like here on white dog 4:46, and more dark shadows. Xperia had and still has those problems. And RAW on Mark II it`s crap, aganist my new Google Pixel 4
@GrantLikesTech4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I really feel people will like one or the other given how different they are. Thanks for watching and leaving your thoughts.
@troy55684 жыл бұрын
Highlight clipping is NOT a problem, rather it's how the cameras work. I mean, I can even say that most mirrorless professional cameras also tend to do those things, but we know we can edit them later in post, while the iPhone's are pretty much what they are and can no longer be changed. However, if you say that the Pixel's HDR-enhanced images are better, then I don't have to argue about anything. The only point here is that if mirrorless cameras don't need to rely on those fancy processing terms to get wonderful images, then smartphone cameras that also don't rely on them are much more professional than those who apply super aggressive processing. I don't like an auto Photoshop for my camera. I just want my camera to take the picture and let me freely edit my photos later on to the way I want them to be. Call me inconvenient all the way you want, but if convenience means having to hinder my creativity, then I'd rather learn things about optics and editing than be dependent solely on other's efforts.
