@kaasis852 жыл бұрын
Dynamic range refers to a sensor's ability to capture information across different light levels. Artifically boosting shadows and doing trickery in software isn't high dynamic range. In fact it's the exact opposite, it's narrow dynamic range because areas that are supposed to be dark are now made as bright as bright areas and the image comes out looking flat. Besides it looks incredibly fake. For a casual user this might be fine but for someone who wants to stylise their work this takes away a lot of that creative freedom.

@@Heartstarts2pound I hate it too. It's a fad that will hopefully evolve into something more natural looking. Some of the photos coming out from flagships look like those mid 2000s HDR photos with saturation and sharpness cranked up to the max. Sharp outlines, hot colours...just looks god awful, especially when you zoom in. It's nothing to do with dynamic range. It's basically a preset and not a very good one.

The battery life is good if you are an average user but when using the phone heavily it wont make it through a full day. I hope the xperia 1V will have a bigger battery. one thing people rarely mention when doing online comparisons with cell phone cameras is - post production & editing > the methods & tools used to clean the photo or video quality up to your liking. on this post the SONY seems to show deeper contrast while the Apple appears brighter - but that doesn't really mean either is capturing shots or video better than the other, it's just processed that way for each phone camera - once again, someone who is really into photography/videography are most likely going to apply post production tweaks to enrich the quality.

@anecro2 жыл бұрын
I haven't watched the whole video, but I'm predicting the iphone not really having an advantage purely because Sony has translated many things from their alpha cameras and their vibrant but natural video color science to this device, including their insane focus system. I'm predicting a lot of unnatural, artifacty results from the iphone knowing the company and their philosophy of anything shot with their devices being a one-click job done type deal. Also slightly worse color science, but they might have an advantage when it comes to pure visibility in either extremely dark or bright scenes (tossing usability and quality of the visible image aside). For this reason the Iphone's footage will probably be very hard to work with in post. Let's see. I'll edit my comment later but I think I have a pretty good idea of how this is going to go down. Edit: Holy crap are they different. And yeah I'm proud to be saying that I was spot on with a few exceptions: I thought the Iphone would do a pretty good job with balancing shadows and highlights but it looks like it really likes to produce bright results while crushing shadows for the extra dynamic range. Every image and video out of the Iphone is significantly flatter, but I don't consider that a negative necessarily. In darker scenes I'd imagine it would outperform the Xperia. However... The colors in the Iphone are not only artificial, but it has a tendency to produce a lot of green for some reason? The white balance seems to be off, I don't think there was a single white spot that didn't lean towards green on the Iphone shots. Additionally, it likes shifting the blue color of the sky closer to green for that "Instagram travel" look that goes hand in hand with the "blue a** water" trend lol. On top of this, the shots produced by it pronounce details, which is cool, but they also look predictably oversharpened and in some cases oversaturated. Overall, yeah. Pinnacle of hdr-iness. The Xperia behaves pretty much like I predicted. Vibrant colors and it doesn't retain much information in the darker spots of an image, so poorer overall dynamic range, but it's very natural-looking, artifact-free and to my surprise it didn't blow out highlights as much as the Iphone did despite poorer hdr performance. There's a clear winner here. This is a testament of sticking to reality as opposed to cramming so many algorithms and AIs to come closer to the one-click-edit dream that ends up looking ridiculously over-processed and wrong in many cases. And it's quite refreshing to see a camera maker win over the popular guy through pure knowledge in the field. Edit 2: Regarding depth of field, the Iphone has pretty much the best selfie, background separation when it comes to photos but if you're talking about natural depth of field produced by the sensors then it's no surprise you didn't see any significant differences, because both cameras are ok when it comes to smartphone sensor size. If you want better natural depth of field you'll have to look at bigger size sensor smartphones, usually marketed taking into account their larger sensors, like the new 12s Ultra by Xiaomi (there are 4 modern 1 inch sensor smartphones and they offer the best bokeh you can possibly get, specifically the Aquos R6 and R7, Xperia Pro-I and Xiaomi 12s Ultra). And as far as "it comes down to what you're shooting" goes, I can't think of a scenario beyond very low light (where extreme and mature computational photography has an edge) where you'd want over-processed images with their white balance and colors completely thrown off on top of a very flat image with the potential of overblown highlights. All of these issues add time in your attempt to fix them on top of it all, and you'll never be able to surpass the original image simply because you're adding more layers of processing that produce or pronounce other issues. Honestly I don't see the appeal of Iphone's stock app at all when it comes to film making, it's constantly fighting against all the control and flexibility you'd want, it's fundamentally against it since it wants to take care of everything without you looking twice.
