[CLARIFICATION] As some have pointed out, the video footage being presented from the Cinema Pro app in Venice CS is not color graded, which of course makes it look much worse than it would otherwise. This was a production constraint on my part and I apologize for the confusion. *However,* outdoor daylight footage is still often overexposed even after color grading, as can be seen in Patrick Holland's video for CNET here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppaXpZKcbtKGrMk. As such, my evaluation of Cinema Pro when paired with this camera stands - but I apologize for the confusing presentation.

By the way Michael, to the best of my humble knowledge, Sony phones are the only ones capable of auto ISO in shutter priority mode, that's a big deal when dealing with fixed aperture on smartphone videography. So if you haven't given a try, then try leaving the ISO in auto instead of locking it to a set value. 😎👍
@TheMrMobile3 жыл бұрын
@@williamaungleyraud Sadly you don't seem to be able to set ISO to Auto in Cinema Pro at all. Hitting Auto advances the ISO to where the camera thinks it should be, but it doesn't automatically adjust it as conditions change (at least, it didn't when I was working with it). Regarding reviewing after a software update: sorry, but review phones need to arrive ready to be reviewed.

@williamaungleyraud3 жыл бұрын
@@RemixedVoice Sony has been improving in software support, definitely not leading in support, but you can count with the next couple of major Android updates and security patches. I don't see why not being carried by us carrier to be something bad, right the opposite, the very first thing most US carriers do it to remove the dual sim card tray because they absolutely don't want you to have a competing carrier, then they fill up your phone with bloatware apps that for the most part you can't uninstall, particularly carrier apps that will remain tracking you no matter to which carrier you move to, can't even disable them. Then they trap you for another 2 years contract because it's cheaper to finance a flagship over paying all in full, plus it gets more expensive because carriers gotta make a profit and who pays for the markup it's the end users. My very last carrier phone is the Oneplus 6t and I'm back to buying unlocked phones directly from the manufacturer, T-mobile killed all the great features of this phone starting by the super fast Android updates, it isn't worth the convenience of having a device ready to buy if it kills most of what I can do with my device. The screen doesn't get bright enough, and it always runs at 4k, wrecking the battery. Sony also didn't promise 3 years of updates like Samsung does. Yes, Sony mobile turned a profit recently, but that's only because they fired a bunch of people and pulled out of markets. I'm really glad to see all of these features in a flagship & really love Sony's commitment to longevity through battery health, but I'm wondering how much better the Xperia 5 MK III will be for battery life given it has to render less pixels all day. I want to replace my aging LG G7 (RIP LG mobile division), these offerings are retaining all of the basic things I like daily like the RGB for my custom Telegram notifs plus those extra tactile buttons as well as some first class photo tech since I want to get into taking more stills of my world. In short: how soon should it be until we learn more about the little brother of the 1 if you know? Thanks for reading. PS: are they not including the kickstand case in the box now like I saw in a couple of unboxings? I'd find great use of that with this good display for video content.

@@propersod2390 😂😂😂 just so you know Sony got Android 9, 10 and 11 way before Samsung did. I personally like both phones, but Sony squashing those software bugs with the camera then you don't have much to complain. Even battery life can be adjusted, all Sony needs to do if the same lie Samsung does, but just let the user actually choose their resolution and frame rate and there you have your battery life, Sony battery life isn't the best because it's pushing 4k resolution at 120fps at all times, which Samsung cannot do period. At the end of the day these are 2 different phones for 2 different buyers. Trash for some is the treasure for others. The worst move for Samsung was to kill the expandable storage, and the headphone jack it mocked Apple so much about then it copied, ah don't forget you don't get a charger with Samsung phones anymore either. Gotta buy one pal. Yes Sony doesn't win the popularity contest, but it's great that it exist for those who truly appreciate it.

Of course it'd be overexposed with those settings midday. Even if you had the hardware capable on a camera with those same exact settings (aperture, shutter speed, iso, etc) it'd be blown out as well on that too. You'd need an ND filter and they make those for phones as well. So if that part is being compared to a dslr, mirrorless, etc, then it would make sense to use an nd filter in that scenario to make a fair comparison.

I like how the camera samples look, it seems to be way more than enough for someone who is not largely interested in photography than me. All the rest seems great, as well. Great performance, amazing display, tall aspect ratio with no interruptions, a headphone jack (located at the top), expandable storage, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, a notification LED, real stereo speakers, and a physical camera button. No other phone has all of this - sure, this phone is not perfect, and no phone is. But the main issues I have seen reviewers mention are the battery, which is not at all the best, but is also most likely not bad either; the display not being bright enough, it is just barely less bright than my XZ Premium, which I really only use indoors anyway, so it poses no problem for me; and some say it overheats, but my guess is that, on a hot day, with max display, taking a lot of picture samples outside would warm up most phones. Under more normal, less camera-heavy use, this phone looks great!

Now this is what you call a review! I've seen a lot of videos on this and none of them went into the detail you did. The shot at 15:53 looks REALLY good, but the night shots look awful! I'd surprisingly really enjoy this phone I think with a few tweaks.
@williamaungleyraud3 жыл бұрын
There is definitely a lot to like in this phone, but definitely needs some updates to fix most of the annoyances. Luckily it all can be fixed with a software update. But the only bummer part for me is that the headphone jack didn't work with the wireless mics. What most guys do to shoot at fixed frame rate and aperture is to use a nd filter to cut down the blown highlights and let iso automatically deal with the rest. What is odd is the lack of dynamic range on the overall image, and if that is log footage grated it definitely needed a more accentuated S curve. I'm very on the fence to get one, but at the same time I want to see Sony squash those software bugs before I put my hard earned money into it 🤔
@hubbardfan3 жыл бұрын
It's because the footage shot is hybrid log gamma footage in cinema pro... And needs to be color graded in something like Adobe premiere... When graded properly all the color info come back and the footage is surprisingly great... This was on the Xperia 1 ii... And I don't even really know what I'm doing when it comes to pro video shot on hlg or really know much about color grading... But I do know I output the footage in a way that is compatible with non HDR TVs and screens... As I don't have an HDR screen to edit it on... The only thing you might want to consider is if you are trying to shoot video in really bright daylight at a shutter angle of 180 which kinda like a common practice you probably gonna want an nd filter to stop down the light because since the phone has fixed aperture... The phones aperture will let in too much light... Unless you want to adjust it by shooting at a different frame rate or by turning the shutter angle up pretty high to compensate... m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHizdaCajsmUjJI

As I said on, I think it was MKBHDs vid on this, it's a fricken shame that Sony had all those screen customisations (charging/unlocking/colours etc) that they didn't allow the bloody basics! People like me, might want to set the screen to 1080 Res with 90Hz refresh for every day use, bump it up to say 1440 for movies, and then up it to 4K 120 for games or such... Either way, HOWEVER WE CHOOSE. But with a 4500MAh batt/slow wired charger, and even slower wireless charging, and a forced 4K 120? That's the 'nope' for me. If however, a further software update corrected my mentioned flaws, then... It's an instant buy for me!! 🤔😎

i love sony i adore them but i always find the camera just bad, one could say it's great that they don't do gimmicks but some gimmicks i like like over 100x zoom, this phone is designed for professional photography so pulling it out of your pocket and quickly taking a photo especially in the dark just looks bad, this was a complaint i had with the 1 series all the way to the beginning, and the brightness isn't bad it's just limited, if you open the google photos app the screen goes in a overpowered brightness mode then you'll see it's true brightness. i love sony but the camera just isn't for me as i am a grab and shoot i don't want to mess with settings, what appeals to me so much is the design of sony phones they are flatter more boxy but now the note series looks more like a sony phonr, but the thing that i am so disappointed about is that the ce markings and that stupid trashcan symbol is on the back printed, sony removed this with the xperia z1 by hiding this information inside the sd compartment on a piece of paper, then they got rid of this amazing idea and that was the stupidest thing they could do, my other gripes are curved screen corners and too much curve ratio or the removal of super vivid mode, i miss sonys classic design if they released the mk4 with the design of the xperia z5 i'd be all over it. overall i love the design and the speakers but it's a very niche phone but it doesn't have to be, work on auto mode make something that rivals the pixel 5, work with google on it do something, because not everyone is going to mess with settings, i miss the original z series i miss omnibalance, i am disappointed to find out that the camera is likely as bad as the mk2 unless you use it for it's intended manual purpose
