It does heat up but not so that it shuts itself off, but my scenario is B-roll, a little of selfie mode talk, stills on the go. I bought the Xperia 5 II my backup camera for inteviews and other client work, and with good lighting, nobody noticed it wasn't a footage from my A6400 for ex. As a long time photographer/videographer who now also chases his toddler around, I've been thinking hard about this "in camera" vs auto-computational magic question. Even modern professional cameras now default to a number of automatic corrections for barrel distortion, noise, vignetting etc. The lenses are even designed with that in mind now. So it's a bit of a false dichotomy, rather how much do you want done at the time of shooting vs after the fact? I guess my ideal would be something like this Sony in terms of giving you the full exposure tools if you want them, but the key is better mobile software. Something that gives you "the magic" to fill in any settings you didn't touch at the time you shoot, but also gives you some easy sliders to dial it in later from the preserved data right in the phone without having to start from a raw file every time.

My problem with the manual first philosophy on a phone is very simple. If you care about manual first shooting, you will get a cheaper DSLR and a cheapish phone. That will give you unmatched quality compared to a phone. If you already have a DSLR(or a mirrorless), then you probably will use your phone for casual shots. You arent gonna take quick selfies with friends with your DSLR, nor will you want to spend time setting up the shot or even just the settings. You wanna click the button and have a pretty picture. Thats what phones are good for, they are the replacement of the point and shoot, and thats what they do best, point and shoot. Could i set up a prettier picture with my Xperia 5 II than my bf's iphone 12 mini, yes. However, i have a dslr as well. And when i just want to take a pic of my cat sleeping, it always goes out looking better on the iphone. Phone cameras should be about simplicity. A phone can never try to compete with a proper camera(on quality given time to set up the shot and all the settings), and the thing is, as soon as they try to, it ruins the ease of use of the camera. Which ruins it for most people, in most use cases(quick shots)

Would love to upgrade to the IV but I am so disappointed at how far the price has risen since the 1, and how they are still announcing phones months before releasing them, allowing the hype to fade away and this is what leads to lack of sales and only 2 years of software support. Imo they should have gone with one proper camera instead of putting so many at the back. I think what bothers me about Sony is that they weren't always like this. I've personally owned an Xperia L1, L2, and XA1. Sure, the L1 and L2 weren't powerful by any stretch with their Mediatek 6737T CPUs, but they managed to pack that premium feel into a budget handset regardless. They included Sony's exclusive apps for the time, they had cameras with plenty of manual mode goodness (though the auto modes were terrible compared to other phones, as you alluded to in your video), and holding one in the hand felt like a fashion accessory. The XA1 was a bit more powerful, had that dedicated shutter button, and felt even more aesthetically pleasing. Then Sony stopped shipping their budget phones in the US when they moved to the 1, 5, and 10 series (with the 10 series replacing the XA series). The price shot up drastically, and suddenly it was no longer worth it for me.
@jortuspelatus7364 Жыл бұрын
They probably simplified their lineup with the 1 series being the flagship, the 5 the 'Compact' line and the 10 being their 'budget' line. Also anything over the 1 series being a 'Pro' variant of their '1' series.

Based on yours on Juan Bagnell's videos about this phone, this was the phone I chose. First time going "all out" with a phone in years and years. And I am probably as happy as I ever have been comparitively after buying a new phone than I can remember. I had a 1-2 year old mid range Moto as a daily driver, but I was just tired of always waiting slightly for the phone to do anything and everything. So I decided to stop buying mid range phones. Now I'm just waiting for a case and screen protector. The things really that sold me are the dual front facing speakers, headphone jack, sd card expansion slot, and video out. Dual front facing speakers are so rare anymore.

For me, it's a shame that such amazing hardware is wasted by the lackluster software update schedule. Sony doesn't promise or deliver updates like Samsung, a company that's taking aim at Google despite having way more devices to keep track of. For the price, the 1 IV should have at least 3 OS upgrades and 4 years of monthly OTA security patches. Samsung is doing more with 4 OS upgrades and 5 years of security patches, but the former would be reasonable. As a fan of Samsung's One UI, I would have loved to see "Good Lock" style customizations on Sony's phones since they really help power users make the device their own. I love having a grid-style recent apps menu (instead of the one-at-a-time layout), automated routines for apps, using the power button for a flashlight toggle, AMOLED black theming throughout the OS, etc. Samsung makes this all possible without a custom ROM.

Really great features in terms of hardware specification. There is everything to love about it and I can’t believe that in 2022 this phone handles 4K capture, process and display like a champ. Shame about the poor camera software implementation for auto mode. The mobile SOC comes with top notch processors which include AI engines. Sony is not taking good advantage of the processors available with Qualcomm Snapdragon to give us a camera auto mode worth the asking price of the phone. This phone needs to wait for Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 to provide the right performance efficiency and thermals balance. Last Remarks: 4K 120Hz HDR ❤

I really like Sony's hardware offerings that set it apart from the competition, but it really is a difficult sell with the caveats of a steep price tag and poor software track record. Not gonna drop a shell price just for it to be obsolete in two years' time even with added hardware features. Even buying a foldable or a flagship glass slab + mid-range with added features seems like a better deal than this. Perhaps only for the niche audience or loyalists.

Some thoughts I had... 1) Expandable Memory... Yes Thank you!!! (1TB SD card is only ~$150 USD these days! - great for all that 4K footage & also KZbin, Spotify & Netflix downloands) 2) Headphone Jack... Sony is the only brand to have released "truly wireless earphones" but keep the headphone jack... Apple, Samsung & so on ditched their the same year they released their own wireless earphones. 3) When taking photos or videos with the cameras I've always used the google camera app, the quality is amazing! Only on the rare occasion do I open the "pro" apps & take my time to do a myriad of minor adjustments to take the perfect shot. 4) 21:9 Screen as silly as it sounds is a game changer for apps like twitter! (my previous phone had a 4K 16:9 screen but was unable to fit anywhere near as much stuff on screen) 5) We have already lost LG... if we loose any more brands it will quickly become a duopoly.. with just a couple brands fighting over market share it will stagnate innovation & increase prices.. I imported my Xperia 1-II to Australia in April 2020, Just over 2 years ago and I still get system updates from Sony. The most recent one was 3 days ago. Yes.. I did say imported because a few years ago Sony left the Australia (and Indian?) market. Being very disappointed with a previous Samsung Galaxy I decided to check out an overseas offering. The cameras are nothing short of amazing & the screen... it's hard to believe they can do better, but then again Sony did invent the OLED screen (Despite what LG & Samsung would love for you to believe). I wish more companies to step into the mobile phone arena!!

Honestly, like Marques said, announcing the phone now and releasing it 4 months later is another reason why this phone won't sell as much and will go under radar. Next one is, where smartphone manufacturers are giving you 4 or 7 years of software updates, a much more refined, consistent and overall better camera experience and software that are polished(no bugs) or overheating issues,... And much more out of their smartphones. There is Sony, still with the confusing name, same issues from last phone, poor overall software(in general), mediocre camera experience at best and a price tag that will only make buyers seek out "comfort" to their foldables, iPhones and Samsungs. 💯

Hey Michael, commenting on your remarks at 9:35 and hear me out please, I am a photographer and I believe I understand the reason why you like the photos. when the first computational photography algorithms came to smartphones (Nexus 6, 6P, Pixel 1 user) I was really amazed at the amount of information you could extract from smartphone cameras and I thought that they are the next big thing in photography, however today I disagree with that statement (IPhone 12 Pro Max, S21 plus user). Phones nowadays produce amazing dynamic range but it just feels unnatural and it became the norm, so rather than creating "Art" in perspective of photography phones now just capture the moment with the best amount of detail and processing they can do, which is not something bad, its actually convenient, but in terms of taking beautiful photographs I don't believe they compete in the same space as even compact cameras now. The Xperia lineup is just focused on people who want more natural or closer to a normal camera experience and results and that is not a bad thing either.

the problems: 1. As you already mentioned - automatization and post processing (it is simply missing and for that amount of money, I want both) - could be maybe fixed with the GCAM? 2. The price - I'm sorry but if the price is around 1600 USD then I rather wait for the Fold 4. The price is comparable , offers me new tech and according to Samsung, the same cameras as the S22 Ultra 3. The start of selling the phone (September? C'mon. Presenting a new phone and then selling it 4 month later? Especially at the time, when iPhones are launching and the Z phones from Samsung?) 4. software support - for a phone that costs 800 and more (I don't care about the brand) I want at least 3 years of software support. Samsung is already offering 4. 2 years are just not good enough. what I definitely like: - the pro modes if you are someone who likes to customize photos and now even voice recording - headphone jack (still love it even tho I have wireless earbuds) - micro SD - makes life so much easier to transfer data from my pc - construction of the phone and display
