Sony ZV-E1 vs a7Cii for VIDEO - What's the DIFFERENCE & which should YOU Buy for Filmmaking???

Cool video, thanks for posting! The lenses breathing comp works on both cameras on the G lenses too, not just the GM lenses. I own and use the zve1 and a7cii with the So y 20-70 f4, pz 16-35 f4, 20 1.8, and 30 1.8 (both G) and it works great!

That’s good to know! 👍 Thanks for posting. I have a Sigma 85mm ART & it doesn’t work on that one. So I guess it’s just the Sony brand lenses in general that are compatible. I’ll have to start adding that to my tests when renting new lenses.

ZVE1 has full sensor 60fps and nearly full 120. That makes it the choice for me. Photos there is hardly any difference unless enlarging substantially (other comparisons on line) the ZVE1 photos are surprisingly excellent.

So I film martial arts tutorials for my main channel, both indoor and outdoor sometimes. I am deciding between these 2 as well. I do some photos, but only for thumbnails and stills shots. Sometimes I have to record for 20 - 30 mins straight, and/or few clips of 10 mins long videos. I heard ZV-E1 has overheating issues. But also know a7Cii crops your 4k videos. Such a hard choice. But which one would you recommend?

I like the ZV-E1 better overall for its more compact size, but if you are going to be doing long recordings outside that’s definitely something to take into account. How hot does it get where you live? A lot of overheating also happens when the screen is against the body. When it’s flipped out away from the camera body, it helps to dissipate heat more quickly. I wasn’t aware of a crop in 4K on the a7C2. I think that’s just when shooting 4K 60 fps.

Hey, thanks for the info, but what about overheating on video recording? 4K30 for 45 minutes or longer..? as i saw out there the ZV-E1 goes quite hot after 10 minutes.. what about the 7CII ?.. thanks again!

I honestly couldn’t tell you. I don’t typically do overheating tests because when it comes to typical filmmaking, you’re usually only recording for a few minutes at a time. The a7C2 is pretty much the same size as the ZV-E1 with the same bitrates so I’d assume the temperature affects would be nearly identical. That said, I would think filming indoors with the screen flipped out away from the camera would help with heat issues. Are you shooting long interviews or KZbin videos or something like that?

Built in fan so definitely no overheating. Way more external audio options/settings. You can record RAW video to an external recorder. There are way too many things to list. It’s an actually compact cinema camera. It was also used to film the movie “The Creator”

I'm not sure. Sony just says both have "15+" stops of dynamic range.

@jaymills1720 most likely. You’re only going to get the max dynamic range if you’re shootings in SLOG3 and doing all the grading yourself after. I prefer the ZV-E1 because of the lower pixel count and slightly clearer images in the shadows when filming.
