Sony ZV-E1 vs A7IV Video Showdown - Can the Hybrid Keep Up With the Video MONSTER?!

i am using sony a7iv since from November 2022. Because i am doing both photography as well as videography. After the launch of Sony ZV-E1 and FX30 i did not feel any interest on those cameras. i remembered last year i cropped 200% on post production and the footage was still useable and sharp. Mostly i used my A7iv on Super 35 Mode for more reach. Clear Image Zoom is just digitally cropping on camera instead of post. In this Video you are talking about many those features which can be easily added by single firmware update on Sony A7iv. If you’re interested in photography, there is no question about it, the A7 IV is the better choice. It has a viewfinder, two card slots, a mechanical shutter and more physical controls. I also think it is the best choice if you’re seeking a hybrid solution, because it doesn’t compromise on the photography part while offering excellent video quality with lots of pro settings and better heat management for long recording sessions.

Oh for sure. I made sure to stress that in my video that if you do ANY photography especially if you get paid for it, the A7IV is the workhorse to get. With that being said, we had my family over for Thanksgiving and I took photos with my ZV-E1 and they turned out dam good! If you know what you're doing it is very capable. I am a prime shooter and I like to setup in the correct spot so I don't need to punch in anyway so the sharpness was more than adequate. I'm really happy with my choice as the ZV-E1 is a lot better for my needs, but I really did love that a7iv! Glad to hear you love yours.

That's awesome! What lens are you rocking with it mostly? Have you had issues with it getting too hot? A lot of people have been asking me, and while mine has never overheated, it does get pretty warm.

@@thesahdstudio I am mainly using the Viltrox 16mm 1.8. I really like that combination. Gives me 24mm on dynamic stabilization. It does get warm but it has never overheated. I did a 40min interview, outdoors in the sun at 24fps with no heat warnings or issues. A friend of mine bought one after seeing mine and he told me he did get the heat warning within 5 minutes out in the sun. I told him to switch to the high warning setting. He did that and didn't have any further issues but still seems strange to overheat withing 5 minutes at the low setting. He wasn't sure what frame rate he had it set at (he is new to video) so that only makes sense if he was in 120.

@@runningintohistory Sounds like a neat little lens! I've never tried a Viltrox yet but I have a few friend/commenters who talk about them a lot and how much value they offer. Yeah interesting about the settings on your friends camera. I do shoot 30fps so, maybe that doesn't help my cause. So far so good though. Love the camera!

Had the A7IV for a week now and LOVING the sharpness of the video and low-light capability. Active steadyshot is decent, not great, but not terrible. BUT the multi-metering face priority is not good. Tested side by side with my Sony ZV-1 (a 1 inch sensor), walking around the house, from well-lit rooms to dark, and backlit scenes, and while the A7IV destroyed the ZV-1 in terms of noise performance and sharpness, it was almost every time that the ZV1 gave me better face exposure. Shooting vlogs with the A7IV makes me sometimes feel I'm constantly "underexposed" unless I use manual ISO. I wonder if the 33MP causes this. This using a Sigma F2.8 lens, manual aperture and manual shutter, just auto ISO. My results match what I see in your test, so I'm inclined to assume this is how exposure metering works on this camera.

Did you play around with the different metering modes (center focus etc), and if so, notice any difference then? Because yeah that is very interesting... I wonder if just having SO many extra pixels is the difference? Let's face it, it's a LOT of extra pixels. But that's rad you are enjoying the sharpness. It's awesome to have a big juicy 4k monitor and play around with footage from that. You like the Sigma? I've enjoyed the Sigma on my aps-c cameras (the 16mm) but I haven't bought any of their more premium lenses. Once I spend that much I have chosen to just get the Sony lenses instead due to size mostly. It sure is fun buying and playing with gear eh?! I wish it wasn't so dang expensive 👊😆

Small correction, the ZV-E1 has a dust and weather sealed design - I'd put a bit of tape over the microphone grill at the top though! :) - fantastic video as always! - Makes me even happier that I went for the ZV-E1 over the A7 IV! - I just got a Nisi Swift filter set which includes a 1/4 pro mist filter, it's so cinematic! - Using it for my next video.

Yeah good call! The plastic feeling on the zv-e1 definitely doesn't give me confidence to go rock it outside in wet weather when compared to the a7iv anyway, but it's probably better than I think. And that filter sounds awesome... did you choose that one for a particular reason over the others? And guess what? My picture profiles have changed to yours (missing 7-9)... I'm not sure if that was with an update or what... very confusing!

I also have both of these cameras, and have done extensive testing. In SLOG 3, the a7iv actually has better dynamic range, and better noise performance in the shadows up to 12800 ISO. I know, the ZV-E1 has the same sensor as the "Low Light King" (a7Siii). However, I've done numerous tests at various exposures, and the results are that the a7iv's noise performance is just better. Also, the image quality, namely sharpness is also much better on the a7iv. That being said, the ZV-e1 is an awesome video camera, and I do not regret buying it, not even a little bit. It dominates the a7iv in many ways, most of which you talked about in this video. My only criticism of your comparison is that you had a lot of settings on auto, and PP Off. IMO, that falls way short of telling the whole story. But that's just my opinion. For me, I'm keeping both.

It's interesting looking back at this video... I shoot everything in log, so I'm surprised I said I used No Picture Profiles. Maybe I didn't. Yeah either way a lot of the tests I do are more so for beginners who get the cameras and don't really know how to use them. I think Pro's could make either of these cameras dance, but people with less understanding about lighting, exposure, metering, etc... I think perhaps the zv-e1 would be more forgiving in harder circumstances. Both great though! I just picked up a zv-e10 as a b-cam and while it's fine, I sure wish I could have kept the A7iv instead!

Good Comparison. Thank you. ZV-E1, in my opinion, is always the right balanced pick for videography. I'm not too fond of sharp video images, because, in the real world, our analog eyes visualize things around us in a smoother, buttery, and blurrier way for our brain to process data faster. 12MP is indeed the right choice for 4k video. Paying the extra bucks for A7IV or any high-end cameras for higher resolution doesn't make sense for videography (Photography is a different game, altogether); more data for our brain, the more processing power our brain needs. Sony's marketing team is trying to project this camera as a vloggers camera just to protect the higher-end video lines. In reality, this camera is pretty good even beyond documentaries and movie productions. Movies just need good cinematography, direction and story-line; here the higher pixels/resolutions doesnt matter. Overheating, is of course 1 downside why the prices are kept in check. It can definitely be fixed, if sony really wants to via firmware updates (I'm a thermal engineer, btw).

Yeah the extra megapixel will offer more detail that's true. I ultimately chose light over detail, but a LOT of people use the A7IV and have massive channels. It's really good!

Hard choice! I got Sony a7 IV and now I'm looking for the second angle camera (one front and one top to shoot the table for unboxing and review videos). What do you recommend - buy this one or another Sony a7 IV? I'm choosing between them because Sony Monitor & Control app supports only these two models.

To be totally honest, I would rather have two of the exact same cameras. I personally prefer the ZVE1 As a straight up video camera but the a7iv is definitely good enough... The lenses make a bigger difference at this point. It might be a bit overkill but having the same camera is huge. I was rocking this ZVE 1 and the ZVE 10 and they both have different menus and it was just a nightmare. Hope that helps!

My little studio is pretty cool in there but if I shoot in 60 FPS which I love to do anything over 20 minutes You're risking overheating. 4k30 and 24 are better but still will get there around 30 mins.

I’ve been researching and researching since ZVE1 came out to determine whether it was worthwhile upgrading from my Nikon Z30 (which is the best camera for the money). They just dropped the price of ZVE1 by £420 in the U.K. (indicating overpriced) but you are basically getting a £3500 camera sensor in a body for half the price. Your video is excellent- can’t believe how much better on video the ZVE1 is - the bit where you walk out of the house and the colour/ white balance. It also takes excellent photos although the A7iv is undoubtedly the winner on photos. My attitude is very similar to yours- I do KZbin and put my photos on Facebook etc. Great review. My ZVE1 and 24mm F2.8 come tomorrow 👍 Keep up the good work on the channel and great hair👨‍🦲’brother’ .

Thank you for the positive comment. It is appreciated. I am still in the honeymoon phase with this camera and after putting together this video I am happier with it than I thought I would be! I would say this is an absolutely worthy upgrade and if you can afford it you should get it. Everyone recommends the 20mm f1.8 which I know is a great little lens... but I splurged on the 24mm f1.4 and have no regrets :) And like you said, I'm sure it still takes great photos.... maybe not for birding, but for the family or pup, or even just walking around it'll be just great.

Yeah to be honest, overheating is the biggest issue with the ZV-E1. MOST of the time since I shoot in short bursts, I never have an issue. But then when I shoot longer for 25+ minutes and it shuts off I roll my eyes every time. The quality is just awesome with the ZV-E1 but I'm not sure I would buy it again for that reason alone. I'm not sure what I'd buy at this stage in 2024 to be honest. I still love mine and prefer it over the ol' a7IV... and it's hard to pay the big bucks for an old A7siii.

Yeah I was a little limited by my knowledge at the time... I had a bit of a time crunches I couldn't really afford to keep both cameras for too long. But yeah I think the Sony a7iv is just fine for talking heads for most people. It's a very beloved camera for a good reason!

The ZV-E1 is still amazing but it does overheat! IF you shoot in 4k60fps like I do, anything over 20-25 minutes it will shut down on you which can be very annoying. I love this thing but dam it frustrates me every once in awhile. You can get the fan which helps but... it's another thing you'd have to charge etc.

Nice! Yeah I still love mine. The quality for the price is just fantastic as long as you have the right expectations. It's not great for shooting long form content unless you by a fan and shoot in lower frame rates etc. But I do a lot of 4K60 and it's fine for shorter shots.

The shutter speed has to be higher in Dynamic Active for it to be even more stable. If shutter speed is twice that of normal than stab is better.

You bet. I usually try to in the video or description at least but sometimes perhaps I forget. I have traded my way up to using the Sony 24mm G-Master f1.4. Not the cheapest lens but jeez it lets in so much light I can't go back to anything else. I use a Godox SL-60 which isn't anything special... I shoot at 5600k and have a 36" softbox with the crate on it to soften the light. I have a Neweer 660 as my hair light and use Govee lighting as my accent lights. I am also using a Deity D3 Pro which sounds great but you have to turn it off and on EVERY time. Annoying! Let me know if you have any further questions!

I'm considering adding the 16-35mm PZ to my bag for something wider with a zoom option, but sad that it's an f4. The Tamron 17-28 seems nice with 2.8 but also larger/heavier than my 20mm.

@@MollyFitzBrown Yeah f4 :( lol. Pretty hard to go from f.1.8 to 4 but maybe that's just the amateur in me who can't get enough bokeh. I have the Tamron and it's ok. I have talked about it quite a bit on my channel. The lack of Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) starts to show once you compare it to Sony lenses... you can sort of make up for it with the Dynamic Active stabe but... yeah the Sony 16-35 OSS with Dynamic turned on would just look so slick.

Well I think that's why I was surprised too because I realized 12 megapixel is still extremely sharp. It's not as great as bigger megapixel cameras because you can't punch in as much but when you frame it right it's still plenty!

I like to shoot stills, and I get that when I started shooting in 1972. Pentax, Canon, Nikon were all great cameras. Got lots of great pictures from my travels in the U.S. Air Force. Now I still like to shoot stills. Videos are OK, but have little use for them, mostly for gags. But I am serious by stills. And that is where my A7R3 is my choice of big camera. Shortly the A7R4 came out, drats. But the camera that really change for me is the a6700. And that was the reason I sold my A74. Yes, bye, bye A74. It was good, but it was not great. The a6700 is so much better even with the smaller sensor. I also have a ZV-E10 to fool around with, great for chasing my grandson around the house. So I can see for video use, the ZV-E1 is the only choice in the FF body. The examples showed the 11mp sensor looked sharper and clearer than the A74. Looking at your daughter's eyes, it was clear the E1 was on target, the eyes were absolutely sharp. Not so on the A74. That AI chip really makes a difference.

So what else was it about the a6700 that you fell in love with over the a74 and even your A7R3... is it the size? Because those other two are very capable stills cameras, so I'm curious if the size was the real factor (and maybe some of the new tech?). I guess you already had some glass for it since you also have the zv-e10. It sounds like you've been in the camera world for a long time... why and when did you switch to Sony, and what did you have before? A loaded question I know, but I love talking this stuff!

Now that I have both and have tested them a bit; a7iv in 1/25 even at f2.8 and iso5000 will work in nightime shots on slog3 if you shoot on 24-25fps 1/25 is ok and you dont really need to do 180rule, in fact to me 1/25 in nighttime looks better, more fluid. Zve1 on the other hand at same settings has more noise because its 2nd base iso is 12800 not 3200 as in a7iv. Also a7iv has sharper image Zve1 has insane 1080p Its pros and cons and you cant miss with either of those cameras

Yeah that was my takeaway too. I was just using the camera mostly out of the box without really getting into the deep settings like you are talking about with the dual base iso etc. But you could definitely grow your KZbin channel as big as you want if you slightly know what you're doing with either of these cameras, with good lights, and a decent lens.

Yes. Big time winner and low light based on my experience. I can't talk about the overall dynamic range... I don't really know how much the resolution impacts that in extreme conditions. But has someone who primarily shoots indoors if not a lot of light the Zv-e1 one is far superior for my needs.

@@SandeepSonii Well right now I just bought the ZV-E1 and it's incredible. There isn't anything that touches it for the money. If you want the best (for an amateur) get that with the 20mm f1.8 or 24mm f1.4 like I have. If it's too much, any of the Sony full-frame stuff will do just fine! I am team full-frame so if you want someone to convince you to get an aps-c you need to go somewhere else lol!

@@thesahdstudio V-Log is really good but what I love from the S5 IIx is the exposure tools (vectorscope, waveform, luminance spot meter... ) the easy way to set the white balance, shutter angle, open gate recording, hdd recording, anamorphic support... They went all the way to maximize the features available in that camera while keeping the price low.

I've heard that it might get crazy when using human/eye detection and there is more than one face in frame but I didn't experience it myself yet. For me the biggest con of this camera is that it can generate moire in some situations because the lack of low pass filter. I don't think I'd sell my other cameras, though. It's just a hobby for me and I enjoy playing around with different gear 😅

Please do more photo comparison !!! I haven't seen a video providing a direct comparison for ZVE1 vs A7IV on the same lens , setting and same object/subject being shot. Would be good to provide zoom-in / resolution comparisons too please!!

Haha, unfortunately I don't have the A7IV anymore. And I'm a video guy! Photos aren't really my thing right now but in the future I will keep this in mind 👊 I do enjoy photography, I just don't know as much about it as I do video for now. Are you considering the A7IV or ZV-E1? What camera do you have now?

I did not use any filters. And to be honest I have very little experience using filters... I feel like that's something I'd love to get into one day, but since I do most of my shooting indoors at the moment I haven't had the need. Do you use them?

Fun question! Do you mean between the 2 cameras in this video? Tough call. To be honest, probably (and always :) the zv-e1. Even when I take photos I never use the viewfinder... and I just love the extra low-light capabilities. With that being said... I would consider selling my a7iv to get the a7cii, I think that's just a fun, inspiring camera (love that silver design). What about you?

@@ramblr5900 to be honest my man, I don't have experience with astro at all. If you already have a lineup of aps-c lenses I could see you wanting to stay in that ecosystem... but since you threw vlogging and traveling, it's hard to suggest anything other than new new a7cii coming out.

Hi buddy, the ZV-E1 sure is a nice camera, it's going to replace my ZV-E10 for video but I'll keep the A74 too. For video but also photography, the A74 can't be beat for the price, but the ZV-E1 does have a nice grain to it, like A7S3, they do have their own look, maybe it's the bigger pixels.

My first test was that studio shot where I thought the zv-e1 was better, I was like Nice! Then I did the upstairs stuff with the kiddos and thought the a7iv was actually pretty dam good.... but once I started moving around with the camera did I truly notice the difference. Like you said, for photography and just as a general Hybrid camera the Sony a7iv is hard to beat given the ecosystem. When are you going to pick up the zv-e1?

It's simple, are you a video shooter? ZV-E1 is better for you. Hybrid shooter photo/video? a7iv is better for you. Do some paid jobs and then get the Sony a7rv, best hybrid camera out there right now. Good video!

Thanks! I think the problem was for me when I started is (and why I create these videos) I didn't know WHAT I was yet, you know? A lot of people out there are kind of dipping their toes in the KZbin world but they sort of want something capable in case that doesn't pan out... but yeah, your advice is solid advice and I usually echo that in my videos.

Lol. Well I can easily change that in post. I know a lot of people just click record out of the box so in a way was trying to emulate that. Not the most scientific tests but I think the results are still fair. White balance doesn't affect exposure which was the real goal.

It makes no sense use auto settings when comparing two cameras images because the result will be random. Its not necessarily the case that you reveil any special characteristics by that because the results will differ.

@@videoout1849 How do you mean random? I had the shutter speed, ISO and aperture set. I adjusted the white balance in post since that doesn't matter to the exposure, so I'm not sure what you think is so random about it.
