Yeah with 30mm and the zve10 you probably need the camera about 6 feet away for a medium shot. Make sure you don’t have active steady shot turned on, that will zoom it in a little further still. If you need the camera super close to you, you might consider the 16mm f/1.4 lens instead.

What lens would you recommend for overhead filming? I do fairly zoomed in crochet tutorials, I’m new to cameras, and have just got the Sony zv e10 with the kit lens and I’m struggling to get the same quality shot as I got with my phone. Thankyou for a very informative video 😊
@NicholasJamesJohnson10 ай бұрын
Your situation comes with a few variables.. How will you mount the top down camera? How far away from your hands do you want it? Just how zoomed in are we talking, because they make some lenses where you could have the whole screen be just the tips of those needles and that would be super cool looking but also really hard to keep it in frame as you work.. Generally I would start with a 24-70 f/2.8 so that you can zoom through the range with it, and also if you’re struggling to get the quality you probably didn’t have enough light for the kit lens. (The kit lens requires a lot of light for a really clear picture, but can be television quality if you do it right)

My current tutorials you can see my hands but not much from my wrist down but I do often bring my hands closer to the camera for detailed bits. Do you have any recommendations for a macro lens? Like for showcasing arts and craft tutorials, or making mini clay figures? Thank you! :)
@NicholasJamesJohnson5 ай бұрын
Hmmm, it really depends on the particular project.. For REALLY small stuff - I would say get your hands on a Sigma 105mm 2.8 Macro. I really really like that lens for macro stuff; I helped shoot an artists work where she makes these little sculptures out of money that are meant to look like drugs and they're super small but I wanted to be able to shoot them totally full screen and that was perfect for it.. But if youre talking about arts and crafts that are bigger, like kitchen table top something or other - then you might be better off with a 70-200 2.8, since those can be stood back further but zoomed in further. The closer up you get in Macro, the thinner the plane of focus and the less things will be in focus at once. But it looks so good! I should really make a whole macro video, now that I think of it.

Hey Nicholas, the 11mm 1.8 or the 16mm for small rooms , when i want nice bokeh and show a little from the room background?
@NicholasJamesJohnson7 ай бұрын
It depends on what you’re doing in the video, but I would go with the 16mm. 11mm is so wide that it can distort your face IF you’re shooting where your head and upper body fill up most of the frame. But if you’re back a ways and demonstrating something where you need to see like a whole wall in the room, that 11mm would be the better choice.

What is the appropriate lens if I want to use this camera to shoot a podcast, three cameras.
@NicholasJamesJohnsonАй бұрын
Youre saying youre using three of this same camera to shoot a podcast? The appropriate lens depends heavily not he space youre shooting in. If you have a large space with a lot of room behind there participants you'd want to shoot with a longer lens for a nicer look - but if its a tiny room and youre right against a wall then you'll have no choice but to choose a shorter lens. What's your space look like?

what recommendation would you have for doing over head filming? I mainly do scale model work and airbrushing. filming the air booth scenes is always hard to keep focus plus dealing with keeping the airbrush coming in frame and taking the focus off painting the object and I try to have as much light as I can because it's a even smaller area to work in. great video again.
@NicholasJamesJohnson Жыл бұрын
If the thing your airbrushing doesn’t move up or down, just side to side, I would set the focus from above and then switch your camera into manual mode so the focus doesn’t change from there. Otherwise shoot at like f5 or f8 and crank the iso up to compensate. That 10-20mm zoom would be a good lens choice so you can get nice and wide, but that all depends on how high up you have your camera mounted for the top down.

How about the kit lens? It has no use?
@NicholasJamesJohnson8 ай бұрын
It’s not that the kit lens has no use; but the kit lens will have a lot of limitations. It requires more light, so shooting indoors comes with more compensation. It has a limited aperture size, so in the case where you WANT the background blurred out, the kit lens can do that to a lesser degree, the footage will look more like sitcom footage. But certainly not everyone wants blurry backgrounds all the time so there is plenty of use for it.

I was told 11mm is best for fitness videos. Would you agree or do you stand by 24 or 30?
@NicholasJamesJohnson10 ай бұрын
Well it depends a lot on the space you’re in. 11mm is SUPER wide, so if you have a really small space you’d need something like that. But if you are able to set your camera up maybe 10 feet or so away from you, a 24mm will end up looking a lot better. Basically they produce a really different look. Those super wides will do a fisheye effect like an old skate video. WHICH can look awesome under certain circumstances! There is a pretty nice 10-20mm zoom that would give you options with a single lens.

this was extremely helpful! And I can't believe how timely. I've been researching cameras and lenses non-stop since yesterday. I'm a total beginner. I had settled on getting the Sony ZV E10, but couldn't decide which lens and then I saw your video! I'm thinking about either the first one you showed or the last one. I saw your other video about which lenses to use for talking head videos. (which was also SO EXTREMELY helpful!! It was exactly the type of video I'd been wanting to see). I'm trying to relate the information I learned in both these videos and my other research. The 16mm f1.4 lens that you showed - would that be akin to 24mm after the 1.5 crop in the Sony ZV E10? And so it would be similar to Peter McKinnon's field of view? And the 10-18mm f4 lens that you showed - would that be the most similar to Casey Neistat's videos' field of view? I like that really personal, inviting the viewer into your space - type of feel in my videos, so I've been trying to hone in on lenses that do that. Thank you so much for all your information. it's been so informative! I've absolutely subscribed! :)

Hi there, which lens would you recommend for gym video. I would like to have a blurred backround(people in the background) and can’t decide which one would be the best
@NicholasJamesJohnson Жыл бұрын
It’s tough because I’ll bet you want to show your whole body, and when you’re that wide, you won’t be able to blur the background so much that people back there are unidentifiable. Notice when I’m holding that heavy bag you can still see most of the stuff behind me. But for ease of shooting you’ll want something like the 16mm so that you don’t have to have the camera 8 feet away from you. 35 or 50mm would look a bit better but the camera will have to be really far back to get your whole body. For the super blurry background you’ll need to have a closeup, so if you’re just showing one part of your body that you’re working or just your face talking, that’s where you’ll get the real nice looking blurry background with a 50mm or 85mm. It’s a tough choice…
@Quietlybuildingwealth Жыл бұрын
It is okay if people are visible, I just don’t want their faces to be very clear because of the GDPR thing. Then I can just explain to people that they are blurred in the background. For multiple uses like that, nothing beats the 24-70 f/2.8 from sigma. Cheaper than the Sony one but just as good!

Sigma 10-18mm doesn't have optical stabilization OSS.

Wow thank you for this. I don't understand camera lingo so the examples you gave helped out a ton! All I know is that I have a very tight space with a green screen. So, I am confined to the green screen so that the edges of it don't show, but I still wanted to film from my breasts up because they are big, and I wanted to show them off! I wasn't sure what lense to use but this helped me out a ton!

If I get a 10-18mm then I do not need 16mm prime I guess?
@SPACEDESIGNWAREHOUSE3 ай бұрын
SORT OF yes. But the 10-18mm can only go down to f/4 and the 16mm can shoot at f/1.4 which will improve shooting indoors remarkably.

What about if filming a church service and the camera is about 70 feet in the back and want a good face image?
@NicholasJamesJohnson7 ай бұрын
Whoa, that is a special case; you’ll need a tripod and a sigma 150-600mm

To me sigma 30 f1.4 or sigma 18-50 f2.8 . 16 is good cause you can crop but less bokeh than 30 mil . 💋

Yeah, I would only use the 16mm if I had to shoot in a really small space. It IS also f/1.4 - so if you're closer to the camera than I was here, you can actually get some bokeh, but it's not my style either.
