I used to be a canon guy, until I bought me a Sony NEX5r camera and man I became a Sony fan so fast! I even bought the canon 70D to see if I could replace my 5r and nope, 5r was still too good. Gary, I bought the A6000 and took it on a whirlwind tour of Italy. I took great photos of the Pope, Leaning Tower of Pisa, St Mark's Square in Venice and vineyards and cathedrals and castles in Tuscany. I LOVE this camera. I brought home the images I wanted to bring home BUT I didn't have the benefit of watching your video where you described Eye AF. Out of 50 frames of Pope Francis driving by, I got 4 nice hits from 20' away using High Speed Drive. I'm sharing this because I shot in Auto mode 80% of the time to ensure that I didn't miss something and that was a good strategy. I'll add that although I bought 3 batteries and 2 64GB cards, shooting in 16:9 20MP Fine JPG Airplane mode, I used about 1.5 batteries over a 12 hour period. I really didn't need the third battery or the second 64GB card but they were good insurance. I brought a MacBook Air 11", card reader and a USB 3.0 500GB drive for nightly backups and with the addition of the 55-200 lens with my 17-55 kit lens, I was good to go. Really, most of my work was done with the kit lens. I added a soft cover to my PacSafe Single Point Strap and I was good for the day. Again, mastering the auto focus would have made my trip perfect but even with 12 days of shooting, I brought home 3000 images and an hour of video clips. The workflow compared to DVC is light speed. I left my Sony HV30 at home and didn't miss it. Thanks for the great video. If you can point me toward a really in depth Focusing demo, that would be perfect.

Great info...thanks! I’m completely new to photography and after a bit of research I bought the a6000 and Samyang 12mm lens to supplement my watercolor painting efforts. What I’m surprised about is how often I read comments about getting poor results. I’ve been studying via great videos like this and putting in lots of practice time and I’m definitely seeing an improvement in my shots. Maybe it’s because I’m coming from a painting background but I’d say that if you’re unhappy with something...anything in fact...that so many people get good results from then maybe you’d better put in a little more time on your learning curve. Anyway, thanks again to Gary for supplying another great professional video that really encourages beginners like me :)

Gary I'm currently using Canon Rebel XTi with canon 50mm f1.8. Good basic stuff, nice portraits. I often don't have the camera with me because of the bulk. AND I don't think I'm getting the eye popping sharpness of the best modern lenses (e.g Sony 55mm) or as good low light performance as a modern camera. Do you happen to have familiarity with my rig? Will I see an night and day difference in performance going with a6000 plus the Sony E series 55mm? Most important: are there any functions MISSING on the a6000? For example, can I set white balance? Can I set different tonal like Canon "custom profiles"? Can I shoot raw + L? Can I chose a spot focus? What does one GIVE up in an a6000 compared to a consumer APC-S camera like a modern Canon Rebel T5i? Thank you! Art

Hi Gary - I really enjoyed this review. I was on the verge of moving up from a compact (Canon S100) to a DSLR ($800 budget). After watching this I am extremely tempted by the A6000 over my initial plan to get a Canon Rebel DSLR (100D or 1200D) or Nikon D3300. If you had the choice would you go with the A6000 over one of the entry level Rebels? Thanks!

Thx Gary.. Just started using this body today. The sharpness of the pictures is awesome and the focus is very fast. I'm a Canon user and trying out mirrorless. This technology can only get better. Back to my menus now...lol...

Hey does the 12fps include continual focus between each and every one of those 12 shots? How fast is it really if it focuses each shot? The D4S will auto focus for each of the 11 shots per second so I'm curious if the a6000 is doing the same thing or even better.

This is amazing. The SONY A6000 camera is amazing. Gary, your presentation is so informative and interesting. I do have a question on the use of lenses of other manufactures on this camera. You mention that the adapters will accommodate the canon type series AF lenses. Will this SONY A6000 work with the Sigma and Promaster lenses that work with my Canon EOS Rebel S 35mm camera? I know the A6000 does not have a full frame sensor and that the area captured will only be a percentage of the full frame. Will the auto focus part still work? Also, with a proper adapter, will my legacy Super-Takumar screw mount lenses work with this camera in manual focus mode? Gary, your presentation is great and I am very interested in obtaining this camera as my first move from film to digital with a real camera and not just a pocket point and shoot digital. Thanks Gary for the video.

Gary I did jump to the Sony a6000 from Canon Rebel and in almost every respect I am thrilled. I am getting sharper, cleaner photographs, fast focus in good light, and I tend to have the camera with me in far more situations due to its modest size and weight. TWO SERIOUS PROBLEMS though: poor low light AF, and video overheating. 1. Poor low light autofocus. I am finding the a6000 is very poor at low light autofocus. It hunts forever, often punting and choosing infinity. Meanwhile someone in the same room at the same time is shooting with a Nikon and having no trouble at all. I lost many shots shooting at a couple of events until I figured this out. I wish the reviews had pointed this out. With good light and native lenses the AF is blazing fast. In low light I find that it is smoked by Nikon and Canon. Very, very weird, b/c it has a great sensor for taking photographs in low light. 25000 ISO available, and 3200 is quite nice. Overall I LOVE the a6000, but I did buy it thinking that it would be better for shooting concerts than my Canon Rebel. Sigh. I had the expectation of using face-following to avoid the problem of the camera focusing on the microphone instead of the singer. Why should a camera with an extraordinary low light sensor be so poor at low light autofocus? Have you experimented with this? Others have seen the same problem and we are discussing various workarounds such as DMF. See: www.dpreview.com/forums/post/54985825 2. Video heat There is an additional problem that many of us have encountered: overheating after shooting 10 minutes or so of video. This is not a big deal to me as I don't do much video. Talking with Sony customer support, their attitude seems to be that this is not a camcorder, so what do you expect. It is a feature, not a bug. However Sony literature and reviewers highlight the excellent video capabilities of the 6000, with good cause. While it is working, the video quality is amazing IMO. I do think it is important to point out this overheating limitation. Many speculate as to workarounds, such as shooting slower video at lower resolution, or keeping the screen away from the camera body to allow heat to escape. One fellow on the internet fashioned a rig with a small fan he got at Radio Shack, and that works, but is a bit extreme. So there are 2 flies in the ointment. Two very serious problems in an otherwise miraculous unit. I guess nothing is perfect. I do think it is important to let people know about these problems. I have spent several dozen hours now tracking this stuff down, researching on the internet, talking to Sony customer support. I lost all of Christmas day (7am to 1am) researching the low light AF issue because I lost a lot of a shoot on Christmas eve to this problem, while my colleague with a Nikon was easily shooting away. Of course I started in each case thinking that I was at fault, then only slowly discovered that the problems I was observing were shared by others in their experience as well. You do such an excellent job telling us the highlights - the good stuff. Please make sure to point out the limitations as well, as you encounter them.

Hi - thanks for your movies Gary, nice work! One question - are you sure, that phase detection is working during video recording too? Because, if I switch a6000 to S mode (for example), then with AF-C I can see small green rectangles/PDAF points on scren. But if I switch a6000 to MOVIE mode, I can see during AF only big green rectangles, which mark contrast AF areas...? So, really is on a6000 PDAF (actually combination PDAF and CDAF) active during video recording?

What do you think about this camera vs the Sony a5100? I'm concerned about the lack of a viewfinder on the 5100, but the flip lcd on it is extremely important to me since the primary use of the camera will be vlogging. However I'd like to have it double as a professional camera, and I'm concerned that in bright light I may not be able to see the LCD screen well enough to forgo a viewfinder with the 5100. Also, I've been quite into photography before and will miss the option of plugging in an external mic, etc that you get with the 6000.
@NVRick19 жыл бұрын
If you manage to see this, I would point out that a big minus in the 5100 is the lack of a Fn button. I had the 5100 for a few months and returned it (Thanks Costco!) and bought the 6000. The EVF and the Fn button make all the difference in the world! There was just too much 'menu diving' in order to make changes in the 5100. I don't really miss the touchscreen on the 5100 as I can get to and change the flexible focus point with the touch of a button.
@instagamrr9 жыл бұрын
richard blaski Hey, thanks! I've actually had the 5100 for a few months now. While the menu diving isn't fun, I couldn't compromise on having the "selfie screen" (the lcd that flips up) since I'm primarily using it for vlogging. That one feature was worth more than everything else to me, otherwise I definitely would have gone for the 6000!

I'm a D7000 user and I love its dynamic range, but I want to switch to mirrorless camera for a great portability. Some people recommended me the Fuji X-T1 and image quality is amazing. What's the main difference between A6000 and A7 (besides the crop vs full frame) picture quality wise? both have the same processor and mega pixels right? A6000 user here and thinking about getting A7ii.

New to higher end cameras here and wanted a clarification of something you mentioned: You said lenses that are not Sony E type would not be compatible with the eye autofocus feature, but will the camera still be capable of fast autofocus on subjects using the higher quality glasses out there? Thanks for the review.

***** Could you use the LA-EA4 on an A-Mount super telephoto and expect to get good AF results during wildlife or sports/action photography? The same question for the Metabones adapter and a similar Canon/Nikon super telephoto. Thanks!

does it shoot in RAW as well and is it wifi active? - in other words, does it transfer its photos via wifi or does it have to be done old school? What is its total shutter life time count?
@GaryfongInc7 жыл бұрын
You can only transfer JPG files via the Wi-Fi transfer. RAW and video files are too large to handle in real-time. Not sure on the shutter lifetime; you'll need to check with Sony.

Great videos, love the A6000, but when you shoot your light sphere and custom white balance videos you use 1/8000 ss, will I be able to use one of your kits effectively with the A6000 only able to do 1/4000 max? oh and a tip for others, listen to Gary, and shoot video in 24, in 60 it overheats and shuts down after about 30mins (not just a Sony problem), in 24, two hours of video with no problem at all !

thanks for the answer Gary, I know you are a busy man, and a family man! I enjoyed your shoots in Europe, I am from the US but live in Denmark, just picked up a great deal on a Sony 20mm F2.8 and plan to use it with your kit!

So, I got to thinking about using lens adapters... If I get this to use all my Canon lenses on, wouldn't it cause focus issues at the long end, because essentially the adapter acts as an extension tube?

Hi mr. ***** im a beginner. And im planning to buy this a6000 over canon 70D. Im going to use this for travelling, and food and street photography. Also for some events like parades and fireworks display. But the problem is, i dont know which lens to get. Should I stay with the kit lens because im still a beginner or should i try other lenses like the 35mm of nikon lens and buy an adaptor? One last thing, it also have a bundle lenses: the kit lens + 55-210mm f4.5-6.3 is it worth having on my photography style? Thank you in advance. I hope you could help me on this. :)

Hi Gary - I just bought this camera after much debate between this and the NEX-6 but I am pretty much brand new to photography. I am using the 16-50mm kit lense and I'm action shots like my daughter sliding down a slide the pictures of her face/body will come up blurry. Is this a result of my settings or the lense I am using? Thanks!

Hi Gary, What lens were you using to shoot the kids with the bubbles? If it was the sigma, does that mean iA was not available?? Awesome video BTW!!

Pics are fantastic. I went to a BBQ this weekend and it just so happened there were kids blowing and chasing bubbles. I was amazed the 16-50mm kit lens on my a6000 performed very well. I will definitely be getting a Zeiss lens. Thanks again for your fantastic videos!!

Hi mate, thanks for your videos. I have a question as i am looking to update from my Nex 5r and old Alpha 380, I'm thinking along the lines of the A6000 or 77 mark 2 and wish to practice my sports photography, ( motor bike and car races ), which would you think is the more capable. Also relating to future lens variety without using adaptors as i would prefer not to go this way. I will also add that I have a young daughter I like to photograph just playing and i seem to miss the great shots and would like to achieve a better percentage of photos. I know you are just testing the 77mark 2 at present but would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks
