Like they act "OH YOU MADE MISTAKE LIKE AN OTHER HUMAN BEING" you are now a bad person forever and you always will be. And to be honest before these people cancel other they need to take a good look at them selves first. ! Really out here acting like they've never said things to intentionally hurt others or have said things by mistake that they were not aware was rude. Some people just refuse to look past the person you used to be and in life there nothing you can do about it. So I truly hope none of this affect him and he simply moves on. I'm black and was not hurt by any of what he said. In my belief people can say and do what ever they want to so I don't think it's really right to be so upset about what other people are doing, again that' just me and I choose not to be overly sensitive about things. But still I really hope from the bottom of my heart this is not affecting him. He is a grown man now and it's time for him to move on with his life. People can't hold him back from that and they need to stop acting like your mistake define you. What defines you is what you do to stop it. This video is amazing!!! Like I mentioned to you before, I think it's very unrealistic that some K-pop fans want Namjoon to explicitly release a statement about issues that happened years ago, when it seems that he's truly grown and learned from his mistakes. I'd rather see personal growth in idols than a manufactured apology from a company. If people feel uncomfortable with BTS' past, that's fine. But to continue to bring up Namjoon's name in every instance where there's an issue of cultural insensitivity in K-pop is ridiculous and morally dishonest in my opinion.

I am a Black adult woman well over the age of 30 who grew up in Birmingham, Alabama. If you don’t know about my state, google it’s history. K-pop groups can be problematic when it pertains to race. Also, non Black hip hop/ rap artists in the US too for the same reasons. Hip hop’s history is intertwined with our culture. It’s not separate. So when someone else decides to pursue a career in this area, it always becomes problematic at some point because there is some cultural appropriation involved. First, Namjoon made a mistake repeating the N word when covering a Shinwa song. He took the heat for the entire K-pop industry. No one went after Shinwa. No one went after BH who in 2014 dictated to the members what image they projected as hip hop artists. There is saying I learned many years ago from a senior. She said people go after what that can instead of what they should. It was easier to go after Namjoon. The guys cringe today when they watch those old videos because they have said they were not comfortable in the stereotypical gear. It did not feel authentic. The more appropriate action would have been to look at the problem as an industry problem and address the executives rather than make it a Kim Namjoon problem. He didn’t invent it, he learned it. He mimicked. He shouldn’t have automatically known anything because he did not grow up in the society I did. He grew up in a homogenous society. If I go to SK, it is my responsibility to familiarize myself with the customs ahead of time so I don’t offend anyone. However even with my best attempt, I may miss something and unintentionally offend someone. I want to know if that happens, so that I don’t repeat that mistake. An apology is meaningless without sincerity and change. It’s simply a bunch of words intended to appease and quiet the “roar.” I applaud Joon’s growth regarding this and sexist lyrics. When he was called out, he educated himself so that he would truly understand the mistakes he made gain perspective and change the behavior. In other words, when we know better, we should do better. I challenge anyone to find another group who committed similar mistakes to be able to explain in detail why their behavior was offensive. I don’t mean say I am sorry because people on Twitter told me I should. Again an apology is more than regret it involves understanding, growth, and intent. An apology is often a hollow response to appease. I don’t want a meaningless apology. I want action. I want the individual to understand the offense so that the behavior is not repeated even when no one is listening. Namjoon educated himself. I see the change and growth. Action speaks louder than words and if you don’t think so, thing again. Is it better to say I am sorry I said I hate you or to stop hating? Namjoon, so concerned about repeating the same mistakes he made in the expensive girl song requested a women’s studies professor review his lyrics before release while at the same time he read books on the subject. Keep in mind SK culture towards gender roles, because as we know culture has an impact on music. Everyone makes mistakes that but Namjoon did it is an unacceptable reason to use to refrain from calling out the group you may Stan. If we really want to address what Namjoon did…..he didn’t stop at the mistake. If people still holding on to the past, so be it. Be honest about the reason. Do you want to be treated the same way when you make mistakes because no one is perfect. Do you want to be canceled or fired when you make a mistake? Do you want the mistake to constantly be thrown in your face and it was several years ago? You have matured and moved on. Karma is real. You can hold on, but someone else can hold on to your past too. All Black people do not share the same views. So what I may see as a problem, someone else may disagree. I may examine action and intent. Someone else may only focus on the action. Life Goes On I love BTS. I respect the members including Namjoon. My Army membership is active. #Borahae #BTS 🙆🏾♀️

Most of us if not all have been racist at least once in our lives. Does that have to define us? We grew up, learned and stopped when we realized what we said, thought or did was disrespectful and problematic. So why can't Namjoon go through the same process? He is a human who's allowed to make mistakes and learn from it. I'm proud of him for the way he educated himself and never repeated the same mistakes twice. Unless you're black and have been hurt by him, i have no hope for people who hate on him for the sake of hating him. So I only hope Army would acknowledge his mistakes rather than try to hide it. He's the personification of what growth should be like. Please remember this. Edit: So, many people corrected me by saying ignorance =/= racism. To which, I wholeheartedly agree. And no, it's not "normal" or "okay" to have thoughts or to say disrespectful things to someone, no matter how many of us have done it (and regretted it later ofc). So yeah, this how everything happened, Well when i grew up i understood how wrong this kind of mindset is, How wrong it is to define someone's beauty by their skin color, i learned from my mistake, i came to know what is wrong and what is right ,i learned what racism is, i learned how dark skin people might feel when they go through this, i learned the meaning of discrimination towards Darked skin people and many more. To me that is what matters. I lived through 20 years of domestic violence and my abuser always said sorry but he never changed. I don't believe in apologies because they are easy and meaningless, I believe in change and I believe BTS has changed. It doesn't mean their actions in the past should be ignored, forgotten or excused, but I will support them as long as they don't repeat their past mistakes. I think, rather than racism, its purely ignorance. Yoy have to remember that BTS doesnt speak english, and RM involvement with western media in the past is only due to his love of Harry Potter. Im SEAasian and I remember a few years back, N word memes are very very very popular. I was a newbie in western related media then, I got bored with online activities of my fellow SEAasians and decided to see what western people up to online. Then i see those memes and i genuinely thought N word means 'buddy' because of how its potrayed in the memes. So i started using it, until i got harassed badly by a triggered western man. Understandably so, but instead of racism, its pure ignorant. Im SEAasian that have one of the most fluent english speakers in Asia aside from Fililinl and Singapore. But even us is not quite understanding about these issues. They spoke their own language, their own alphabets, their own culture and they dont even have that much mixed race in their country. They probably doesnt even know what racism is in the past. Also, among asians, theres no 'why are you wearing hanbok when youre a chinese?!' None, i never experience that. My Chinese friends wear kimono, fellow korean foreigners in my country just wear Baju Kurung and even celebrate our holiday event. Agree with Jeanne Ann. I am also SEAsian, didn't know and was ignorant about cultural appropiation until i know bts. Not that we try to defend their mistake or hide it, but it can come from ignorant, especially when we don't live in the same environment with more than 1 race, have our own culture, our own language, doesn't know the other's. I also thought that namjoon at that time was only teenager who have passion and obsession toward hip hop without knowing about the black culture and cultural appropriation. And, maybe, it was also influenced by how korean media and music industry portrayed hip hop which unfortunately, blended with black culture. Like in B Free incident, how rappers associated hip hop with masculinity, even though the essence of hiphop is not about that. I watched some korean entertainment news or variety shows and knew that some rappers in korea used black culture, esp hairstyles, but somehow slipped from people's radar. Antis and haters only attacked Namjoon eventhou the others are more problematic (one of them is Jay Park). Also, in kdrama Penthouse 3 which the lead actor was portrayed as gangster boss with black culture fashion, completed with hairstyle but it seems no one complaint about it while i felt uncomfortable watching it.... so, i think the one of the most problematic one is korea entertainment industry/media itself. Including their cultural appropiation to Islamic culture which upset us, Muslim (i am Muslim).

The double standards, the internal misogyny that makes people dislike Jimin, the justification and normalization of erasing/discrediting him and his talents, the shippers and especially the ones who send hate to Jimin because they think he's getting in the way of their ship. They take it way too far and even send him DT's to this day just because of big accounts spreading the narrative he's taking jk away from tae/getting in between them and stupid things like that. Also the transphobia hate comments he gets on a daily basis. i would love to see u talk about it and it really needs more discussion on the topic but i don't see many people address it.

As a black person and an ARMY who's bias is Namjoon, when I learned about the past things that he'd done it made me feel conflicted. But I became an ARMY at the end of 2018 and was able look at an overall timeline from his past to present. What made the difference for me was that he did not repeat those actions. I believe that people can make bad decisions and learn and grow from them. He's clearly shown growth. Anybody that looks at Kim Namjoon and can't see that he's changed since he was a teenager and young adult is clearly misinformed.

I'm an older black ARMY who can only speak for myself. I know not every black person thinks like me. I am so glad this video was made. I'm not gonna lie and say that it's not uncomfortable to see the old eras pictures or see some of the old videos or even hear the blacksent from Namjoon. It feels hurtful that black people are seen as just a costume to be put on and then taken off. Not really knowing or seeing us as real people. This is not only an idol issue, this is a problem in fandoms as well. It baffles me that people who stan POCs can be so racist themselves. Anyway my point is that with all BTS have done in the past and especially Namjoon, I am still an ARMY because I have seen their growth and regret. I have seen them try to educate others and themselves. I have seen them acknowledge their mistakes. I have seen them do cultural appreciation instead of appropriation. I have seen them give one million dollars to a black cause and heard them decry injustice and racism. I've seen all of this with my own eyes and it makes me feel that BTS is worth stanning. No kpopper or another black person can make me feel differently. I want to be clear, this does not mean that I will ignore if BTS exhibits any problematic behavior in the future. That I will just ignore and try to sweep it under the rug like some ARMYs have done for their past. I will hold them accountable. I'm just saying the men I see before me today, I'm proud of them as artist, performers and most importantly as just people.
@Super_Chamchi2 жыл бұрын
I don’t understand why some fans want to sweep under the rug. They are humans and shouldn’t only have perfect images. I am an older Asian fan so I know where BTS are coming from. I am not trying to make excuses for them. It’s mostly from ignorant and not really racist against black people. All Asian countries have no knowledge about black culture and and they only see the bad reputation of blacks on tv. In RM’s case or any other international hip hop artists, they think they have to dress or look like blacks to be considered hip hop. I doubt any of them know it’s considered culture appropriation if no one told them so. I think fans should let them know so they can change instead of protecting them. Now I see the person RM becomes, I am proud of him like my own son.
@aiotld2 жыл бұрын
@@Super_Chamchi Exactly. There are a lot of bad stereotypes that I heard from others and saw in the media about Asians too. Plus so called good stereotypes such as being the "model minority". I knew from my own experiences that that is all they are, stereotypes and because I actually have always lived in a diverse environment, I knew not all Asians are one anything and it's harmful to assume that about them or black people or any group of people. I base my judgments off of individual people. I've experienced racism from Asians but one of my best friends is Asian and I'm stanning an Asian group. I don't see any group as a monolith. I think it really needs to come to a point where we are talking to each other and not at each other and really listen to and have empathy for each other. We are all human.

Not a black ARMY, but a young woman's opinion: I believe actions speak louder than words. One of the many reasons I admire BTS - and Namjoon - is how they're humble and respectful. At the end of the day, people's own interests being discussed on the internet through the lens of their favorite artists is each and every one's own problem. We're all accountable for our individual lives. Humans are flawed. Respect, humbleness, acknowledgement and change are acts we all can do throughout our lives as to value others and ourselves. Thanks once again for bringing such a great content, and for allowing those who have a say in the matter to have their voices heard. If possible, can you give me the name and authors of the books you mentioned? I'm really interested in educating myself on the subject 😊 TL;DR: respect is an attitude, learn and grow!

I'm a Black A.R.M.Y that started streaming Kpop in 2015 after I started watching Kdramas. 2nd Generation was still dominating and BTS had just started evolving from the 'Black as an aesthetic' phase. When I say that the Anti-Blackness in Hallyu was strong back then, I mean full on Blackface from groups/variety shows. RM was one of the only ones to acknowledge that his actions were hurtful. To display regret. And more importantly, to show GROWTH. Did he directly say the words 'sorry' or ' I apologize', no, but acknowledging hurt, feeling remorse, and changing behavior (especially in a time when S.Korea was even less educated on Black Appropriation vs Black Appreciation) really counts for lot, to me. As a Black American, I will admit, my tolerance for cultural ignorance isn't what it once was. If a new group came out today with the same concept/mistakes, I'd have no tolerance. As a country/culture that profits and builds off of Black culture, I expect a certain amount of increased education/sensitivity from the industry in this day and age. These days, I pretty much assume every idol/group is problematic until proven otherwise. It hurts less that way. Be as Anti-Black/Colorist as you want to (most of the world is), but don't do it on camera! And I hate that showing displeasure over racially insensitive actions/repeat offenses almost certainly leads to the 'whataboutism' of, "but namjoon" as if he did something yesterday and hasn't corrected himself. As if I wouldn't hold him to the same standards if he did something offensive today. People don't want to forgive him for things that haven't happened since 2016- fine. But then go just as hard towards idols that mess up today. Especially post BLM era. People excuse artists and labels that exploit and fetishize Black culture until today without true remorse or accountability (just shameless), but want to hate on artists that have honestly tried to be progressive, educated, empathetic. Stop hiding behind a label. If something is wrong, take the personal accountability in the face of whatever company penalty/punishment will result as a decent human being. I keep waiting to see growth from other artists, but I just haven't seen anything close to what RM has done. Their apologies mean nothing at this point; honestly the statements are kinda offensive in of themselves. I am tired. But this video was a whole word.

And lastly, thank you for acknowledging their growth, but Namjoon's growth in particular. I know that I cannot accept or reject his apologies, as they were not directed to me. My story about how Namjoon came to be my bias is a bit funny. I'm gonna preface this by stating that I am a black BTS fan. So when I discovered BTS back in the summer of 2015, I was enthralled and taken in by them. I had never seen a group of artists quite like BTS. They could actually rap and the songs were crazy good. Then one fateful day, I came across a video of Namjoon being colorist and it rocked my world as someone who was just starting to like them. I was already used to seeing stuff like that in Kpop but I genuinely felt hurt by him because I actually liked BTS. And so, I kept him at an arms length just to observe him....I felt like I didn't connect with him. Then he did a vlive that completely turned it around. He basically said that he had lived his life thinking his ideas of what was right was actually right and that he never quite thought about how his words or actions could hurt others. He was remorseful and said that he was reflecting on a lot in his life. To me, that meant so much, he didn't explicitly say what he was reflecting on but I saw him in a different light that day. The more I kept listening and watching him grow, the more he enamored me. Taking accountability for your thoughts and actions, actively reflecting and living a life that you preach? that is Namjoon and he is so admirable. He's my idol...someone I genuinely admire and look up to. He's not perfect, I don't need him to be so...he's just Namjoon, a good human.

People are from different places and cultures. And many times we don't know that our actions are wrong. I myself am from Asia, South Asia to be specific and from what I've seen around me, most people are not aware about these issues. The only place where we learn about racism is probably a small chapter in our Political Science or History textbook. Beyond that, there is no other exposure to Black history. I myself didn't know many things, I didn't know hip hop was originally created by black people, I didn't know it's wrong to do braids. I didn't even know that there is something called cultural appropriation. I didn't even know what the n-word is or that people who aren't black shouldn't use it. I learned about all of this when I was 16. There are still many things I don't know. I am not defending anyone, but my point is that many a times mistakes do happen because of lack of knowledge and ignorance. Social media has glamorized the whole "apology video" thing to the point where it's a trend among youtubers, tiktokers, and anybody else who has had a problematic past or incident, and it's funny because the majority of those apologies are half-assed, ingenuine, and only done to save face. But people would rather accept that than somebody actively avoiding previous behavior and trying to become a better person. It's very strange to me. Namjoon, like so many of us was just an ignorant kid who clearly didn't know how his actions could impact others. It wasn't about him hating black people, it was him being inspired by black music and culture, just not in a very tasteful way. And look, us black folks aren't a monolith, we all think differently, and if there are black people who find what he did offensive, they're justified in that. But I think black kpop fans should be careful singling certain idols out when they themselves are usually fans of artists who have done the same if not worse. We can't be hypocrites. The best thing for ALL of us to do is educate and expose ourselves to different ethnicities and culture so we can have the sensitivity and avoid saying and doing things that are ignorant and offensive. One love🙏🏾💜

I was really happy when I found out you were getting the input of black kpop fans on the issue of Namjoon. This issue is very nuanced in the sense that Namjoon's past atrocities were weaponized to attack BTS and black kpop fans- specifically black armys but were only brought up conveniently and never talked about in an objective instead of malicious intent. I take offense when nonblack armys and kpop fans try to tell black armys/kpop fans to stop being angry about something that has nothing to do with them. It is time that we realize that Namjoon is not the same person he was back then. But, it simply can't be forgotten. Like Namjoon said, the person he was yesterday still makes him the person he is today. People can change, but that does not erase the pain he inflicted on his black fans. Namjoon is absolutely a scapegoat that kpop fans use to take jabs at BTS- as if CA isn't a problem within all of kpop. By always using "But Namjoon-", they claim they're just giving awareness to the issue but in actuality, they're just putting more fuel to the fire. So now, instead of actually taking meaningful action in educating on and dismantling harmful stereotypes, we're having a piss fest on who's the "least problematic". It reminds me of the song UGH! We're yelling at each other when we should be working together to stop the rampant CA in kpop once and for all.

The word "sorry" honestly holds no meaning in my dictionary. If a person dies cos of ur mistake and you say sorry, doesn't mean the person can be revived. A person can say sorry in a half assed manner, like how teenagers apologise to their parents when they are forced to say sorry. In my opinion, regret and growth can only be shown through ones actions, and Namjoon is the epitome for that. He has admitted to his mistakes in the blue house, during the UN interview. That interview will be aired on a global platform, and the fact that he fearlessly owned up to his mistakes shows a lot, like how amazing a human he is than most of these people who use him as a punching bag. For the people who still hold his mistakes on top of his head, please self reflect. Ask yourself what else can he do, or what else shd he do. He has shown his respect to black culture, through his fashion being heavily influenced by Lorenzo, or late Virgil, he has worded himself right, and caught himself and others in several occasions where is fans could be hurt. you all forget that namjoon was only 19 when he debuted. He was still young then, and only went along with this tide of people in the hip hop scene trying to get to the top. Doesn't mean he didn't make a mistake, he did, but he apologised and grew from it while y'all are still stuck in that phase of emotions. A person can only self reflect and grow, they can't go back in time and stop their actions. Namjoon is honestly the best version of our species, regardless of gender. He was subjected to such hate, for them as a group and for himself as a person, at such a young age, he was asked to wear those hideous specs all the time coz his eyes were small apparently, and being the only English speaking member then, he was subject to all the hate from the international community. But he just said that he would show them, and he did. Which is why he will always remain my role model, in fashion, music, and lifestyle. All of you hypocrites using him as an example can be stuck in your I am holier than thou phase and not grow.

I'm not black but I grew up in Asia, so I can give some perspective of why it will take time for cultural appropriation issue in K-POP industry to improve Not gonna say that K-POP artists problem regarding cultural appropriation is not wrong, but in Asia 'Cultural appropriation' is not a thing and not even taught in school. I don't even know what it is until I stumble upon it pass my 20s on internet and I have to understand English on certain level in order to get the context as well (majority of people with English as second language will not be able to get it). It took me a while to get why it is such a serious topic in the West, but that's because I consume a lot of Western media like news and shows. And I even need to do research further in order to understand why it's a sensitive issue in the West too. In everyday life 'Cultural appropriation' is not something I think about at all living in Asia (my parents who understand English does not even know what it is until I talk about it too). So I understand why it's a topic that not many people living in Asia will think that it's something to be educated on. There is also the opposite mindset that want as many foreigner or outsider to appreciate our culture as much as possible since that can bring in tourism and income. It also made many of us proud that others have taken interested in our culture. So seeing foreigner in our traditional outfits and using our cultural products are a positive thing. It is more likely that the locals will be happy to see foreigner in our traditional garb than to think that it's cultural appropriation since most people here don't even know what the latter is or even if they know they may not understand why that is a problem. We are more likely to get confuse if those foreigner get angry for us and say that it should not be done because it can be consider 'Cultural Appropriation'. Imagine my Asian parents being very happy to seeing Ashley a white women wearing our traditional outfit, then try to explain to them why that can make other white people get angry at her for 'cultural appropriation'. You will see the real life meme of 'DOES NOT COMPUTE'. If you keep living in this environment then it will never occur to you at all that 'Cultural Appropriation' is something you need to be educated on I'm not saying that this sentiment works everywhere, but that should inform you what kind of mindset we have in many Asia countries that made it's hard to really understand why cultural appropriation is something we should be educated on if we want to tab into the Western market. I'm not saying this excuse K-Pop industry. I even agree that they should be educated on this serious subject, but it will take time since most people don't even get why it's important or know the existence of this issue yet.

Same with us, we also like it when foreigners (like tourist) try our traditional clothes, eat our traditional foods, etc. But i think this is more to "cultural appreciation", rather than appropiation. Because we are happy when seeing those foreigners are happy with our culture. But, i am sure it will be different if those foreigners insult our culture or claimed our culture as theirs. It is same for everyone but i think, most people (like in Asia) just don't know / ignorant that the others (black people) also feel the same as us.
@dnikkithatsame59902 жыл бұрын
I think there are lines when it steps over to appropriation. I think some artists or maybe their teams think “this is cool and black” so let’s do that.., it gives Koreaboo or weiabo vibes. Like wearing doo rags or braids. It seems to feel like a disconnection of black artists and people from their humanity- making them solely objects of cool. Then there’s black face and other things… to much to discuss here. But I think the biggest mistake that K-pop artists make ( which is different from what Western artists do, which is more insidious) is objectify blackness.

As a Georgian I had no idea CA was a thing until I made twitter acc which was like two years ago and in my country whenever foreigner wears our traditional clothes and in general shares our culture everyone appreciates it ,so I genuinely didn't understand why wearing dreads or braids were offensive and disrespectful to black people and I'm sure most of the people in my country still don't know what CA is eventhough its 2022 and everyone has access to internet.

The thing that stands out and lasts is actual change. Their faves apologized directly - sure let's give them that - but it ends there. A year later they do it again and call it a mistake. Making or doing racists things in different forms. The apologies are lies at this point. They say sorry because there's outrage not because they acknowledged it. Let's not kid ourselves. Sigh.

Wonderful video and reflection. Thank you! The only confusing thing was: does anyone think that BTS, the company or the fans are somehow hiding their past or mistakes that were made because of the company's problematic vision of hip-hop culture? No, they're not. Old videos, shows, and photo shoots and vlogs can still be found and viewed on the official website, official KZbin channels, Twitter and fan pages. No one ever hid anything, guys! It's just, in order to understand, figure out and see this GROWTH, which is very well told in this video, all the frustrated, offended or simply haters need to find this info and make themselves familiar with it. That's all. But for that you have to get into it and understand, don't you? It's much easier to just hate, pick up the hype, pretending to be a mindless crowd and that's it… It's so much more comfortable, and you can so well pet all your complexes and grievances against BTS. )) People who took the clarification of RM and follow the work of RM those will understand, those who do not - it's your choice. But for every case of pointless behaviour of your favourites, to bring the analogy of RM after 7-6 years is so ridiculous and pathetic. So tiresome and childish. Grow up, guys! And do well, everyone. ))

As a black army it was hard at first to hear about all of his past mistakes but after seeing how he apologised and has grown into a more mature aware person I was able to forgive him and move on. I understand that what namjoon did came from ignorance and he took it upon himself to become educated which is the best he could have done. There are too many cases of cultural appropriation and racism in kpop by idols who are from the west and know what they're doing is racist because of where they grew up. Unfortunately they are the ones who get off easy because of company drafted apologies and delusional non poc fans, the same kpoppies who bring up but namjoon every chance they get. Like it or not namjoon was born in a country that is ignorant to other cultures, however some of these other idols stan twt tries so desperately to defend are making the same mistakes over and over again whilst being from the US are straight up racist and they should know better.

I think it would be interesting if you tackled how solos/mantis/akgaes like to victimize or infantilize their faves. It’s funny because solos of every single member will make long ass threads on how they’re being mistreated by the other members or the company no matter how much BTS assures us that none of that is going on especially now that the company is very dependent on them. It’s come to the point that the criticism by their bosses or mentors are taken the wrong way to the point they get harassed by the fans when in reality, it’s just a normal day in the life of being BTS bc that’s how they grow with their music. Also, the issues with mantis trying to criticize the company for things like the members’ fashion. Of course they have stylists but they always take into account what the members are comfortable with and a lot of the times, the decisions that mantis criticize were made by the members but still, they blame the company. Imagine if a member was feeling good in their outfit only to find out their supposed “fans” hate it and are blaming the company. I want to say more but I’m honestly exhausted xD

honestly, the black accent thing maybe a hint of it I guess. But it does make sense, South Korea isn't an English-speaking country, i.e it's not their first language. The content you consume shapes up how you speak and he has come forward with his love for rap and soul music which is predominantly occupied with black artists. Bashing someone for their accent is not cool.

I’m so glad I got this video in my recommendations. I am a baby ARMY and a RM bias so seeing this was really insightful for me. During my short time as an ARMY I have learned about some of BTS’s past mistakes particularly RM’s. At first I was upset to have learned about some of his and BTS’s past mistakes and had even wished I hadn’t learned them at all. Then I took a step back to look at them and see how they are now and if they have learned from their mistakes. In my opinion I believe they have and in RM’s case he has most definitely changed and has shown growth and he shows it, like the video said, through his actions which is, in my opinion the best way to show growth. And I’m not saying all of this bc he’s my bias, but bc I can see it and acknowledge it. Now far as the “But Namjoon “ phase goes and I’m gonna be blunt here……. Its stupid and utterly ridiculous. Why drag Namjoon into someone else’s bs bc he’s made a few mistakes in the past? Namjoon shouldn’t be used as a “oh but he did it too” example but as an example of growth. I believe they only do this to him bc 1. He’s an easy target due to his past mistakes 2. He’s the leader of the biggest band on the planet and is very successful 3. They choose to not acknowledge the fact that their fav has done something wrong and try to drag someone else into the mix 4. Or they can be simply just be a lonely hater with nothing better else to do No matter their reason they shouldn’t drag Namjoon in this. He has made up for his mistakes through his actions and is living his best life. As an ARMY I am proud of Namjoon for his growth and only hope he continues to grow as an artist and individual. For the ppl who still use the “But Namjoon “ phase I hope you all see the light one day and learn to hold your favs accountable for their actions and give them the proper time to show them growth. You all stay blessed and Happy Holidays! 🙂💜🎄⛄️❄️

This video was extremely well done. Like you mention at the end of the video, I have always considered Namjoon as a positive example of how people can learn and grow from their past mistakes. I think it’s sad that so many people on the Internet refuse to acknowledge that educating oneself and changing one’s behaviour is a proof of willingness to become a better person.

Watching this video really educated me. Thank you for making this. RM was my bias when I first became an ARMY and then I found out about his past mistakes. I felt uneasy still supporting him, but thought I should look into the situation and do research. Some people said that he apologized and some said the opposite. I don’t get to accept his apology since I’m not part of the black community, but I still wanted to know if he realized his mistake and apologized. After watching his V live and then this video I think I have a better understanding. As humans we all make mistakes… I think just like the saying goes we learn from our mistakes and they help us grow to be better people. I make plenty of mistakes and try to learn from them and become the best me. I really appreciate that RM did that too and is still learning from mistakes. Thank you for helping me have a deeper understanding 💜

I have so many thoughts on the "But Namjoon" trope but I'll just stick to two of them. First of all, as a fairly new army, it was very disappointing to discover the past mistakes and wrong behaviours from him and the group in general. But I also have many years to look back on and see how much growth Namjoon has shown. To see where he started to where he is now is actually very inspiring. He's the living proof people can hold themselves accountable, learn from their mistakes and change. The fact that in his video, he acknowledge that the impact of his words and behavior is more important than his intentions tells me eveything about the kind of human being he is. When usually people are quick to say "I'm sorry but it wasn't my intention to...", he knows that at the end of the day, his intentions don't make it any less hurtful. The "But Namjoon" excuse is not doing what you think it's doing for your problematic faves because it shows a changed man while you're hiding your idols and sheltering them, therefore stopping them from growing and learning. Second of all, it IRKS me to my core to see people "But Namjoon" everytime their idols does something racist or racially insensitive. You're basically showing that you don't care about black people or black kpop fans feelings unless it serves you. You're using the real hurt caused by someone's past and weaponizing black people's pain to divert from your idol misbehaviour. For me, it renders your whole argument invalid. In that moment, you're worst, much worst, than past Namjoon. Black people are not a tool for you to defend your faves. You can not suddenly pretend to care about black people's feelings when it comes to Namjoon while refusing to acknowledge your faves anti-blackness. I repeat : we are not tools, we are not weapons, we shall not be used or riled up into being angry and fighting your battles only to protect your ignorant idols. You can be a fan of someone and hold them accountable. You can be a fan and refuse to defend ignorant actions. You can let your faves hold their L and hope they'll learn from it. The moment you decide to compromize your morals to defend racism or cultural/racial insensitivity or ignorance, you're no better than said idol, you're no better than past Namjoon. If anything it's funny you'd have the audacity to bring his name into it because unlike him, you stay doing it and show no sign of growth.

@@LynnHermione I mean it with respect but that statement is absolutely stupid. The idea that 7 people who grew up in front of cameras and when from boys to men on a public stage never made any mistake is outlandish. Of course they did some things wrong and I wouldn't expect them not to. They're humans before being idols. Just search Adeola Ash on KZbin. She has two videos listing their past mistakes. Like I said, I'm more so here for their growth but don't be one of those blind fans who defend their idols through right or wrong. You can love someone and still disagree with their actions. Think for yourself because you're the one who sound brainwashed and it's worrying

@@noriawawa9073 I've been little mix fan since 2015/16 and Jesy biased. She faced similar backlash and my stance was the exact same. It's not just the actions, it's the way you respond to people being hurt by them and trying to talk yo you about it that shows me your character. I've never been so much of a fan of someone to the point of blind adoration. I have certain values and I try to keep them as much as possible when it comes to supporting or not certain artists. On the same note, I'm not that into kpop and even in the other media I consume, I do not put my energy into bashing idols or artists. I removed my support, read the discussion happening around the topic and keep it moving. You can not force idols or bully them into being better people so save your time and energy and pour it into whoever you actually like. But that's just me 🤷🏾♀️

"but Namjoon" is just the tip of the iceberg on a very easy to identify issue: kpop attracts many people who are searching for a place to belong and joining in on any outrage = how they think they can belong. In reality they don't care about the issue they are angry about most of the time.
@eight29842 жыл бұрын
The thing i want them to encounter is that everyone of us has made a mistake, not you not even me is free from this word. But the way i am seeing it Namjoon has grown a lot whenever someone talks about his past i have always seen sighs and regrets on his face. And as shown in the clips on this video he even reflect himself and I am happy for that. Everyone is open to state their opinions and this is mine, Just because he did problematic things does not mean he needs to be dragged in every conversation and in this case, i believe he deserves an apology because he is the man i have seen grown, learn from his mistakes and on a side note made me realise that i should also learn from them. So he is the one who deserves an apology.

I know a lot of people have already said this but the difference between Namjoon and a lot of idols where the phrase 'but Namjoon' was used is that Namjoon was able to show that he had educated himself and reflect on his wrongful past. And not just once. And while people may choose not to forgive him, he doesn't deserve to be used as wall to protect other artists from the wrong they do when he has nothing to do with it. And well I was going to go into just how much he has grown as a person but our lovely youtuber really said most of what I wanted to say anyway. Namjoon was still an adolescent when he became the leader of BTS. He was still at the stage where he had the chance to learn and expand his knowledge. But rather than just knowing the meaning of his wrongful actions and doing nothing about it, he was willing to understand why he was wrong and how he could change that and he did. I've seen people and known people who knew that what they were doing was wrong but continued to make the same mistakes and create the same problems time and time again even into adulthood. I've seen them say stuff about different cultures and different backgrounds knowing they were in the wrong and even when called out for it they shrugged it off and continued to belittle and insult other people. But instead of seeing those people who wouldn't change and wouldn't be willing to learn, people see Namjoon. Someone who definitely made some of the same mistakes. Someone who definitely said things that he had no right to say. But Namjoon(How Ironic)? When he realised that what he was saying and doing was wrong, he took time to learn and relearn everything he could in order to make sure that he didn't make the same mistake again. And not only that, he made sure that as leader, his group would not do what he did. And if that is not a good example of growth than idk what is. So before y'all use the 'but Namjoon' phrase think about whether or not the one you are defending has shown that they are willing to change and to learn. 'But Namjoon' will not protect any of your faves from their own problematic behaviour no matter what you think.

A lot of people just don’t sit right with his past and were rlly hurt by it so people need to respect that yk

@Babybear exactly how I feel. My point was that most armies instantly defend them by showing comments or posts of black armies who forgave them. Which again great, but they use those comments to generalize an entire community’s feelings abt what they did yk and that’s not the great part, because there A LOT of people who did NOT forgive them, rightfully so, so you can’t just say “oh but [blank] forgave them” like ok? A bunch of other people didn’t so it doesn’t make what they did any better. That’s what I was saying yk

But what I find most interesting is his artificial talents, intelligence ( not only his IQ but I think he has a high EQ level too ) He become better and better each passing day as a person. Personally, I'm really impressed by Joon for his growth, esp considering that he probably had to unlearn beliefs/actions that are generally seen as acceptable or non-issues in the society he's in. As someone who grew up in a conservative and traditional environment, I can safely say it's incredibly difficult to first see where your prejudices exist and is much harder to accept that they do and that they could turn you into a person who'd unintentionally and deeply hurt others. And the difficulty of it all is even greater if you've already caused harm bc of smt you once didn't think was a big deal. And in Joon's case, everything for him was in the public eye. It's impressive how he actively went to understand and change himself and continues to do so, despite ppl flinging constant hate on him, even while dealing with his own mental struggles and self-hate. That's admirable and is worth respect. I can't imagine many who'd be able to do the same in his shoes. I just find it weird how kpoppies complain abt ARMY putting BTS on a pedestal tho, yet at the same time, kpoppies tend to act like they had firmly believe BTS were supposed to be absolutely perfect from the getgo. Seriously, their reactions to any perceived "wrong" from BTS makes it seem like the fact that BTS isn't perfect is the absolute worst thing in the world to them. I agree no one should deny/erase their history (both good and bad), but it's so bizarre how antis treat them like the ex they never got over, including following everything they do, double guessing every action they take, making things up abt them, and over-exaggerating and getting performative over every perceived "wrong" related to them (or from anything that they're connected to). Usually, I can ignore, but the way ppl (and the kinds of ppl who) go after BTS is smt insane for a celeb.

He took responsibility, he grew, he realized what he had done and he stopped the wrong things he was doing. That is all we need from him. People shouldn’t bring back the things he had done in the past and say “but Namjoon”. Also when other people say he didn’t apologize well he did he learned that it was wrong and he stopped doing it as well. Wheather you except his apology or not that is your choice just don’t say he never apologized.

Quick question, when Namjoon was making these bad decisions and people were offended, who was the idol used to justify his actions??? Was there anyone going "But [insert idol name]"? I agree with the comments at 3:13 and 3:26 (both pause and read) and the person at 5:30. Whenever we get news about a K-Pop idol "appropriating" a culture, most of the time, its people who aren't a part of or have no knowledge of that culture that are calling them out. This ends up being annoying and aggravating when they blow the situation out of proportions. Especially when the people (the majority) a part of the culture that was "appropriated" don't feel uncomfortable or insulted. If it's not your culture being appropriated, unless you have knowledge on that culture, then you shouldn't have a say in the conservation at all. Also you guys want to point out every bad thing that RM did in the past but never hold your favorite idols accountable when they do something bad. You can defend them all you want but at the end of the day, these idols are strangers to us and we are strangers to them. We only see what they're like when they're in front of the camera. We don't know how they act behind the scenes. Just because they don't say or do anything wrong in public, doesn't mean they aren't unproblematic (reference to the comments at 3:26). If that's the case, the most of the idols now and back then are problematic. This 'but Namjoon' conversation is plain stupid. To the so called "Armys" who like to spread false information about BTS (or any other K-Pop idols), what is your problem with them? If you really don't like them for whatever reason, don't support them and move on. But y'all just like to find some reason to start drama. To the ones who felt offended for the things RM (AND BTS or any other K-POP idol/group) have done in the past, no one is telling you to forgive them. You have every right to not forgive them. But that doesn't make it ok for you spread false rumors about them

A person does something wrong, his fans defending him saying ' but someone did it already'. It doesn't matter if RM did anything or no, that is not the reason you do something wrong and you defend yourself!!
