I study at IIT kharagpur .. and there is a small restaurant called PFC inside the campus which operates only during the second half (evening till midnight) yet makes 70000-80000 per day. Forget about days when exams are over or students have gone for a celebration post viva etc.. Street vendors’ earnings is also quite good, in 2010 I was having a chat with a Pani Poori guy (16-17years old) outside a Mall in Goregaon, Mumbai, he told at that time his sales during weekends was 15k-16k and during weekdays 2k-3k. In Bangalore also I spoke to many street vendors, below my office a guy had a stall of Chai, Pakoda and Samosa, he had to keep 4 helpers due to his huge sales and was paying 70k per month rent for the small space. Perhaps you’re not aware of the potential of these stalls.

The guys are immature. Having little experience in a domain is not a big problem, being immature is. The guys did not prepare at all for the pitch. I gave more than a dozen interviews in my career. Everytime, I would go for an interview, I would prepare questions, cross questions which I could be asked. I would myself go through my resume many times and find out my weak points and how to tackle them. This process automatically gives success. The guys came as a show off with Bhangra and all. Should not have come at such an early stage, and should have prepared thoroughly for the questions. Location, capital is bullshit when scaling up a food business in its nascent stage. There are thousands of examples of small vendors in India who now own big food chains.

Everyone knows that the purpose of new age startups is economy of scale which can be only achieved by having a scalable and standardised process and a killer product. Only cloud kitchens like Box8, Fasoos etc. can achieve this. This is the first thing which you should know and prepare for. If they want to expand shops, why not take a loan from bank or bootstrap their business ? Not all businesses are in startup category. Many Indians still don’t know the difference. When you go on a show up in front of people who have made it big in the field and ready to listen to your ideas, respect them and their time. It’s not just your words but what you bring to the table which shows respect. If I would go in a presentation with my CEO doing a flashy presentation but without content and not having to put my 200% in it, it would be a sign of disrespect for him. This is professionalism.
