Even if through donations, they would only have been able to use a fraction of what Walt really had, which still meant a mediocre life. Skylar was the main problem aside from Walt’s ego.

Well, kinda the WHOLE POINT of the series is that Walt always felt he was destined to achieve some type of “greatness” but was never able to actually grasp it. Now, whether that was ENTIRELY because of his own shortcomings or because he got screwed over, it’s hard to say EXACTLY. But the point is: his EGO was grievously WOUNDED by the Gray Matter situation years before and he “carried a chip on his shoulder” for all the years FOLLOWING THAT, feeling that he was OWED something.

Gus obviously has to act as if he has absolutely no information about him since he just saw the collection jar in passing and the real revelation was Hank being his brother in law. Its not like he could look at the picture and say to Hank "Ah yes this is the guy supplied me with meth for my operation. He has cancer right?" Of course they hadnt really thought of any of that when they filmed the scene but recontextualised it still works perfectly fine.

The irony that his cancer would allow him to launder massive amounts of money and maybe even pull in people legit donating to him as all those zombie transactions would likely push him up in various algorithms and get more traffic headed to his site. It would make the fake donations even harder to trace. Though some of the excess would likely have to be given to a charity, but I bet Saul could have come up with a creative way to create one that pays a salary to Walter as its director. Could have massaged Walter's ego by using some of his money to build the Walter White Cancer Center or Walter White Oncology Fellowship.
