I’m not black and I don’t really have any family that is, so I have never seen any braiding done or anything in person. These women are SO TALENTED. You making it sound like it's a crime to tip in Ghana which is very wrong. Salons take tips more than any profession in Ghana frankly. They won't ask you but it just courteous to add a lil extra change. In Ghana we just say "buy some coke to quench your thirst. You've done a great job" when tipping. It's a sign of appreciation just like in the states.

The states is a bit different. In the states tipped positions don't earn minimum wage. They earn half or 1/4 of min wage and are supposed to earn the difference in tips. That's why 20% tips are recommended. The states has the worst tip laws and culture. Min wage for a wait staff hasn't gone up in decades

My Nigerian in-laws came to America, and they refused to tip. It’s not a part of their culture in the sense that Americans do. Fast forward, a family member came to the US and had no papers and she had to take a job as server in a restaurant. I actually am an African American, I have braided had the privilege of braiding hair of several different Nigerian women, the one who just came into the USA don't tip, but I noticed that the ones who have been here a while do tip. Precisely. In the U.S. and especially in restaurants n the servers earn less than the standard minimum wages because ut us expected that they will be tipped. For example, the current minimum wage is $7.25 per hour but restaurant servers earn as little admin $2.13 per hour. So it is advised that you tip according to service... excellent 20% or more, decent 15%. Zero tells them you're cheap or their service was bad.

I live in Ghana and trust me the price was excessive. That's the price they usually give foreigners. Edit: I've tried to ignore this comment but I keep getting notifications from it. Let me explain my position. I am Ghanaian, born and bred here and still living here. In Ghana braiding your hair is literally the cheapest hairstyle you can do but in some areas, when they realise you're not from here, they tend to overcharge you. I got my hair braided in a similar style yesterday and it cost me a total of about 94 Ghanaian cedis (weave + workmanship) which is almost 18 dollars. If she had gone with a local she wouldn't have had to pay as much as she did.

Tipping isn't culturally appropriate in every part of the world. It's the traveler's responsibility to research and follow cultural norms. In China for example, leaving a tip is an insult, in the US, not leaving a tip is an insult.

I'm in the UK and we tip for particularly good service but I lived in the US for a while and got into so many arguments with my friends because of the expectation that you have to tip. I get that people in the service industry aren't paid very well and having worked in restaurants myself, I know it's hard work but it drove me crazy when I was required to pay more than what was on the bill. Customers shouldn't have to make up someone's wage!

Tipping is supposed to be part of their pay, it depends where you go .. some places it would be like your taxes, 14-15% ... Others it's 25% .... It all depends on where in the world you are, it is always wise to look at the local customs even at restaurants. If not don't eat out. Cus that is a person's lively hood , my $5 tip is worth more to them then to me so why not *shrug*

Since servers rely on tips, and people tip depending on how well their service was, the servers have incentive to act nice. When servers are really friendly and good with customers, those customers are more inclined to come back, making the employers more money.

I braid this way. It's best to braid this way the braids lay flatter it's better on the hands and it doesn't have tension on the hair once the style is done. It also will allow you to braid more heads and for longer hours without your hands bothering you.

That's a US thing. Most countries find it rude to do. Most places take PRIDE in their work and pay. I learned that in Japan. Not to mention, the history behind tipping started with a way for industries/companies to pay African Americans less than their white counterparts. The waiter/waitressing job was seen as lowly and for "negroes". People should really do research before spazzing on people for things they don't know or understand. Especially when it pertains to a different culture or country.

One other thing to consider in the US is that waiter/waitresses do not make a minimum wage here. They work for approximately $2.50/hour then make tips. So here it is necessary to tip whereas, in other countries, they are paid a wage that is acceptable and is rude to tip in that case. I lived in Germany for 7 years and when you exchange money you do not place change in a person's hand. There is usually a dish on the counter and you accept your change in this way.

Lol I wish my braids could cost $19 😭 but in NYC and Jersey you paying at least $100+ to get box braids from the Africans. And for the tipping I always tip if the service is great but you have to be careful because some places over here already include the tip in your billing 🙄

I don't want to argue but I just want to say I guess why we tip.. well I can only speak for America but, over here yes you're paying for the service but the business gets most of that not the actual person doing the service. That is the reason we tip... not so much to show off. We know how hard people work, we also know they don't get what they are charging, so to show we appreciate the person who did the service and anyone who helped... we tip. I have worked in a few businesses where I lived off of my tips... not the service. I am sorry people came at you for not tipping and understsnding your culture... i just wanted to explain ours. I loved that intto. Those hairstyles were gorgeous!!!

Just the extra done at the end with the curling not to mention how perfect the braids are - neat and precise- deserve a tip. The money paid up front is for the service. Taking the extra steps to make it perfect makes me happy to tip(on top of the excellent customer service you stated they provided)

This is the way I was taught to hold hair for braiding when I was growing up as well. My family is from Panama/West Indies with hairdressers and barbers for relatives who do it like this. I'd never seen the other way until I was a bit older and went to cosmetology school where I grew up here in the States. So, from responses here, the other variation seems to be more a U.S. thing?

The brown stuff is Tom brown. Its yummy. Made from semi roasted grains like corn, rice, soybeans and so on per your preference and ground into a fine flour. Its very healthy too.

I think one of the best ways to view cultures is through experiences like these. Not only can we watch that amazing stylist (like wHOA GIRL THOSE HANDS 👏🏻👏🏻) but you talk about some cultural aspects like the tipping thing. (ps, total white girl here but i adore watching these bc i love how hair has such meaning and is so complex yet so beautiful. 💖 i hate that so many appropriate and don’t appreciate the sentiment.)

Quay Styles very rude...some people are used to paying Ghc50 and Ghc40 for their braids. That’s why we don’t progress.. I went on holidays at Philadelphia n did my sisters friend’s braids n took 20dollars n my sister almost choked me to death😂 Then she added extra 10 dollars cos she loved my work.
