A new producer of the rounds would be awesome. As Sootch notes, the more firearms that come out in 5.7mm, the lower the price the ammo will go to. (Economies of scale). Another gun? Cool. FN five-seven and P(s)-90, Ruger 57, CMM Banshee, Keltec P50, and now the S&W. Going from two guns to six (or seven) creates a different market.

I imagine too, that one of the most important reasons that 5.7mm pistols all have long barrels (by pistol standards) because it's needed to extract the maximum velocity from a cartridge that fires such a small bullet, and is therefore so heavily dependent on velocity for terminal performance.

Kel-Tec have stated that a 40 grain .22 WMR round should reach a velocity of 1230 fps from the 4.3″ barrel of their PMR-30 pistol. This works out to 134.40 ft/lbs of energy. This is a significantly less than the FN Five-seveN USG (4.75″ barrel), which can push a 40 grain bullet at 2009 fps. This works out to 358.57 ft/lbs! Nearly three times as powerful as the .22 WMR This does not mean that the .22 WMR is not a good cartridge. It simply means that the 5.7mm is optimized to be fired from a pistol, rather than the slower burning .22 WMR loads which are designed to be fired from a rifle.

Well they are making a steel/metal gun and mostly aimed for boutique/competition users. I am hoping Laugo didn't patent the design and this will hopefully soon allow other manufacturers to try coming up with under barrel designs. I recall the only main issue people said with the Alien was the frame would heat up quickly like a rifle, so CCW'ing would become a slight issue. I would think for an underbarrel design would require any top slide to have porting to help with cool-off.

@Bristecom
@Bristecom 2 жыл бұрын
The pressures in 5.7 are much higher than 9mm or 380 so I'm thinking it probably wouldn't work as well but maybe. This system was designed more for reliable extraction which is sometimes an issue with 5.7 with the traditional delayed blowback systems and the reduced recoil was just an added benefit. 9mm/380 is already very reliable and compact with the tilting barrel system.

Yeah, a lot of people tend to say zero recoil for low recoil guns, which emphasizes how they feel compared to others but it's obviously not accurate and may confuse new-comers expecting to feel nothing. I've even heard reviewers say some 9mm handguns have zero recoil which is obviously not true, haha. But the point is, this is probably the lowest recoiling centerfire handgun currently.

I think that once the PSA 5.7 co.pact hits the market others are going to tool up and jump in the 5.7 carry game, but not before then. I think people generally put too much emphasis on barrel length when considering concealability, which IMO is negligible. The overall girth of the firearm and the height from the bottom of the magazine plate to the top of the slide is more cumbersome when trying to keep a firearm from printing. I would IWB carry this pistol without gripes or hesitation as its silhouette is very liken to a full size 1911 at half the weight and 3 times the capacity. Just saying.

@@PatriotPaulUSA the 22tcm is an intriguing round for sure; however the lack of ammunition availability through local shops prevents my investing in one. I think that the idea of smaller calibers that are easier recoiling is brilliant. With more and more citizens seeking to exercise their 2A rights,I think that the market needs more effective defensive options that aren't as intense to manage for those suffering with grip strength and such. The other thing is capacity in more compact packages for concealment is something that seems to be a focus and while the 30SC has bridged the gap between capacity to ballistic capacity ility in micro-compact format, it still recoils like 9mm which makes it snappier in small frames doing nothing for management by those who are recoil sensitive. 5.7 and smaller calibers like that with proper defensive bullet designs could be the answer to that problem.
@PatriotPaulUSA
@PatriotPaulUSA 2 жыл бұрын
@@killacoiler1707 I agree, My 78 yr old dad has a joint disability and has had both wrists fused, He is just one of many types of people that are not able to shoot most handguns today unfortunately. @killacoiler1707
@killacoiler1707 2 жыл бұрын
@@PatriotPaulUSA the problem we have in the US is everything has to be the biggest and baddest it can possibly be. For example look at our vehicles they are land yachts compared to foreign vehicles. Is it a necessity; not really. It is more about presentation, representation of status, and appeasing the ego. I wish we could have Japanese mini-trucks for street use. It is the same with caliber of firearms too we apply the same philosophy of there is no replacement for displacement like we do our vehicles and their engines. The funny thing is what good is all that power if you cannot effectively use it on a daily basis. The 22 caliber holds the top slot for most commonly used in civilian human fatalities, yet, ironically it is the round almost every American says is not adequately suited to self defense purposes. So are the statistics wrong, or are we all just too macho to give credit where it is due? IMO a 22 is still better than a cell phone and a stick. Just saying.

Until recently, I haven't even seen 9mm that low in the past 2-3 years. Due to the added complexity of manufacturing compared to 9mm, and the fact that it will never be as highly mass produced as 9mm, not to mention inflation, I don't think we'll ever see it below $30 or so for a box of 50. It's certainly not an affordable plinking platform.
