Oddly enough our MP battalion carried them til 1996. The BC hated 9mm and kept them until the Army refused to give more 45 for training. We actually limited training to bare minimum to keep them longer, even ordering Springfield slides after the colts weren't available for parts. After they made us switch, the bc switched us all to concealed status and issued Sig's. When I retired in 2013 after being wounded in Afghanistan I was given the option to purchase my pistol. I was surprised by the armorer when he tracked down my original m11. It's not an a1 or a2 model and has an Army arsenal marking and made in West Germany stamped on it. Definitely, like me a relic.

Handled one at the gunshop and was impressed with the extremely high quality and feature rich design. Zero play in slide, frame barrel, trigger so wonder if long break in will be needed and if possibly too tight for combat conditions. Not a fan of the squared trigger guard and forward serrations on top of the slide and not on the sides but not a deal breaker. Great grip. I have several books on 1911 gunsmithing and enjoy accurizing and customizing 1911's. I feel like I really couldn't do anything to improve or customize this pistol, so a lower level Springfield might be better for me. If you want custom quality at a sub custom price this might be the perfect 1911 for you.

One thing of note about ambidextrous safteys....if you can't flick off that safety with your left-handed hold, you may not be able to save your life if you've been disabled the use of the right arm. Ok I'm probably going to piss off some people by saying this , this could be a great 1911 with all the new enhancements of the original design , however the trigger is a complete disappointment , seriously I'm not kidding it's awfull it has a lot of take up and creep , and it's made out of plastic !!! Seriously Springfield dropped the the ball on this one considering the price they are charging for this , if you don't want to take my word on it , go look at one and try it . If you're considering buying one you will probably be really disappointed on the trigger . I own several Springfield 1911s , and I am completely disappointed that they completely dropped the ball on this one with the trigger which is a shame considering this could really be a great pistol with all the new enhancements...

Yeah I bought this pistol and I'm not sure what to think about it. I really haven't had time but the trigger and slide release as well as catch pin seem to be polymer. It's really stiff and was extremely difficult to compress slide spring to install pin during take down, maybe it will break in . Sooch made it look simple but that spring is very hard to compress. Nice looking gun but we could have done without the plastic for this price point.

I just stated this as well and see you beat me to the punch. Believe it or not it has become a trend to add some pretty crappy triggers on some pretty nice 1911's. Sometimes where they have cut costs make little sense. Trik or Ed Brown skeletonized would be a great choice. But once again there are several very good suppliers of 1911 parts.

I first saw & read about the Emissary in the American Rifleman. After seeing this video, I want one! I love it in a 6" slide also. In my day bull barrels were only custom competition accessory. The crowning feature is great preventing barrel end damage. Love the bull barrel & the grip design. I hate checkering, my taste. My favorite dressing is a 2 tone look. In the service I always qualified expert with a 1911. This video has me willing to deal with NYC bullshit paperwork to own one. Vid does a great job showcasing & show the firing range tests.

An extended magazine base plate is more than just protecting it if it gets dropped onto thr ground, it forces the hand to slam the magazine into lock positively. Some of the most common malfunctions come from a magazine that had failed to seat and lock because the flush base plate hides in the plan of your hand. An extended base plate sticks out and your palm will pop it into seat and lock properly.

Something I'd like to add is that the Emissary is very tight and the barrel spring is strong. On my 4.25 barrel Emissary I had to use a wooden dowel to get enough surface area pressure to compress the spring enough to where I could see the hole in the guide rod for the tool (make sure you put the short end of the tool in and not the long). I have to say the manual does not explain this well at all and the pictures are very inadequate in the manual.

I have owned and competed with the 1911 for a very long time. I love it. However, when it comes to duty, there are simply better. When you wear a gun on your hip 12 hours a day, 4-5 days a week, for almost thirty years, the 1911 just doesn’t cut it. If you’re carrying the weight, go with capacity. If 45ACP is your thing, G21/41 (I’ve carried both) fits the bill. Today, I’m carrying the P320 X5 with 21 round mags. After two on duty shootings and one active shooter, capacity, accuracy, and ability wins gun fights.

@Blazer: I understand what you're saying, and I agree with you. 19lls are great range guns and are very beautiful. However, with current gunfight tactics, as seen on surveillance video where the advsary is using mostly suppression fire (spray and pray) and one-handed shooting while running, recoil management, shot placement, capacity, and reaction time are more important than caliber size and firearm aesthetics.

To those in the comments who are concerned about plastic… There is absolutely nothing wrong with a plastic trigger bow. The bow sees very little stress and needs to be light. But, if you don’t like the trigger… there are a gazillion aftermarket 1911 trigger options available. We all have different hands and different needs wrt trigger reach length. Replacing the trigger bow with ergonomics that suit you can contribute to optimizing your trigger control.

Dump the guide rod and spring assembly and go with a 'Wilson Combat Flat Wire Recoil Spring Kit". Any Bull Barrel 1911 like this or for instance, a Kimber Pro-Carry, that requires a "tool" aka paperclip, to takedown the weapon, is useless in the field, under stress. Good luck finding your paperclip when you need it. The "Wilson Flat Wire Recoil Spring Kit" eliminates the need for a "tool" and helps to get rid of spring "twang" or bunching up. It's the only way to go with these type of pistols....
