Sooty bark disease is threatening Tacoma’s urban forest in at least two ways:
1) Our maples are becoming sick. Once sooty bark disease is advanced enough in a maple tree, it is very difficult for the process to be reversed, and the trees will ultimately have to be cut down.
2) Most of our Tacoma maples are lush and established, and they provide all of the tree benefits that we need to have a healthy urban forest. When a maple goes down, it impacts the rest of the forest as well.
