When seeking advice for how to live, we often turn to loved ones or authority figures. Michael Yadrick, TTF Board of Directors President and ecologist, turns to trees. In particular, he turns to the Pacific madrone. In this native tree, Michael finds a model of defiance-the madrone defies the culture of natural resource extraction with its winding branches that care nothing about straight lines or lumber. It is also a critical example of the importance of creating meaningful relationships with those around you: through a mycorrhizal network, the madrone stays healthy, reminding us that nobody can really stand alone.
In our latest installment of “Trees of Significance”, Eden Standley and Michael dig deep into the madrone’s ecology, biology, and the madrone’s place in a changing urban forest.
Reading this essay, you will fall in love with the madrone, and you’ll learn how and where to find them in Tacoma’s urban forest, as well as learning how to identify signs of tree disease and how to avoid harming your own role model tree!
