OMG, Sophia, what a blessing in disguise that you decluttered the basement BEFORE it flooded! I'm sure it would have been a royal pain beyond the annoyance and aggravation of drying everything out. I'm so glad that it wasn't worse.

Sophia, you deserve the biggest "atta-girl" award for such great progress. Books are very hard for me to part with too, but as each decades passes and as the stages of my life change, it gets a bit easier to part with certain categories of books. The remainder of my books, someone will probably drop off at the local library on the way to my burial - and I can't promise I won't reach out from the casket and grab a few back in with me LOL!

My jaw dropped when I saw today was books!! Awesome!!! I am one of those people who if I don't fold the clothes as i take them out of the dryer I let them pile up in baskets so I literally fold everything as I pull it out of the dryer, one item at a time, make my pile on the dryer and then toss my next load into dry. Surprisingly it only takes about 3-5 minutes to fold a GIANT load of laundry when I do it that way and then it is ready to either be delivered or picked up by the kid who owns it! When my kids were little the laundry was in the basement and the basement wasn't finished so I didnt want a toddler or infant down there and I would bring baskets up to fold but honestly, later rarely came and it was more like pull what i need and put it on. So happy I switched to this method now that the kids are older, means when the laundry is done it is actually DONE and I don't have piles of it anywhere in the house waiting to be folded or sniffed to see if its clean anymore! LOL I think you could do a whole channel on the Great Laundry Battle of the 21st Century though... we really do seem to think of laundry as a HUGE chore when in reality it doesnt take much time at all!!

As a fellow book lover, huge kudos to you for parting with 30 books! Books are treasures! Prior to our last move, I gave a ton away so I'm building up my library once again! :) "Opinions are like noses ... everyone's got one." ;) Ha ha! I say keep as many books as make you happy!
@melissac.59488 жыл бұрын
From a fellow book lover -- basements can be damp and this encourages mold and mildew on your books. Also, basements are flood prone. Books attract dust and microorganisms and even book lice -- ew -- and can be quite dangerous to your health. Librarians often get some extremely serious diseases from books. After finding these things out, I regulated the humidity in my home, and ruthlessly got rid of all but my most valuable and irreplaceable books. I got new glass-doored bookcases and tossed all my dust jackets. I now meticulously vacuum each and every book with a hepa-filtered vacuum twice yearly in addition to my light, weekly vacuuming. I switched to ebooks. My immune system is compromised, and even though I loved my book collection, I really didn't want books to be the thing that did me in.

I totally get it about the books. I have alot as well. I am a Women's Health nurse practitioner and have more gynecology /womens health and also a colposcopist/ and forensic examiner so I do have interest similar to yours as well. I wouldn't apologize for it. I think women who have a career or special interest will understand about the books. Thank you for all the work you do in that field. Psychology is very interesting and although I typically am on on the clinical part of GYN and women's health I have over the past 25 years also seen just about anything unfortunately and alot of physical illness is caused by psychological events or stress. I have trouble parting with books as well. However, a while back I went through my books and at the end of it, I was able to get rid of an entire one of those tall bookshelves. We have a store here called Half Price Books and every year they have a clearance sale at the fairgrounds (THOUSANDS of books) where all of their books are $2 and under. It is a huge event that I go to every year so I'm sure I will acquire another whole bookshelves worth of books eventually. For now, though, it's amazing having that extra space since I live in an apartment. Awesome progress with the decluttering. You give me inspiration!

I think you should ditch the big box bookcases, start in the area that you just got rid of the dresser, and create built in bookcases so you can turn the basement into a library. And then build more bookshelves where the big box ones are now. You did an awesome job in the office, and you could keep all of your books together... You'd probably have a lot of room to grow as well. I'm actually surprised that with your love of books, you don't have a room designated as a library. Anyway, proud of your progress tonight. I know it's tough!

Great job Sophia! I enjoy your videos and have been inspired to do more stuff around my house, but have not been watching them very long and am hampered by a real lack of skill in this area. Additionally, I am touched by the respect you demonstrate towards your husband and children and their possesions. You don't just toss out what you think needs to go. I really admire that. I am curious though, do Scott or the boys actually do any chores, projects, jobs around the house? It sounds from things you say that you do everything yourself. Am I misunderstanding this whole thing? In any case even if this is true, it is purely your choice and you do it very well and with great enthusiasm..
