The ugly facial expressions is a natural reaction for a lot of people who play guitar. I don’t overdo anything when i am playing, but i make faces automatically. And the man who wrote the solo she is playing “Eddie Van Halen” used to make crazy faces all the time while he was playing.

Just another example of Eddie’s genius. When Quincy Jones wanted to bring in someone to create a solo for one of Michael Jackson’s greatest songs he didn’t call Via or Malmsteen or any other shredder or non-shredder or any of the greatest studio players. He called the one guy who could come in and in a few minutes come up with one of the greatest solos ever. I don’t mean to disparage any of the players mentioned, but when the word genius is used so often it almost loses its meaning it absolutely applies to EVH. Most players are lucky if they can come up with one memorable solo in their careers. Eddie has more than anyone can count. A true musical genius and gone way too soon. R.I.P. Eddie.

Beat it was recorded in 1982. At that time Malmsteen was playing the Hollywood club scene with “Steeler”. None of the other “shredders” had broken out of the local scene yet either except a few little known like John Sykes who at that time was in Tygers of Pan Tang. Randy Rhodes, who was less a shredder and more a virtuoso who had fused his love of classical guitar with metal lead guitar, was already dead sadly. This is not to say that Eddie was not the most impactful/important guitarist of his generation (he was). But Quincy Jones picking the most popular guitarist in the world at the time to play a solo in the style he popularized, on a Michael Jackson song of all things, is really more evidence of the vision of Quincy Jones than the “genius” of Eddie. He was a great player and more impressively, an IMPORTANT player who changed the landscape (like Chuck Berry and Jimi Hendrix). But like you said, genius gets thrown around too much, and I wouldn’t use it in his case either.
