Reading the Republic and I wanted to get a better idea of these sophists that they continue referring to in order to understand why Socrates and Plato seem to hate the idea of not specializing and I now think I have a pretty good idea why, thanks to your video.

I have a question for teachphilosophy: At 11:20 did you mean "morality and ethics - just a way for the strong to control the weak" maybe? because the other way around (the way you said it) doesn't really make sense to me.

Good question. Many thinkers (e.g. Nietzsche) have argued morality is an invention of the weak, but some sophists see it as a way for the strong to control the weak. In the Republic, Thrasymachus says, “Justice is nothing other than the advantage of the stronger” (338c2-3). He explains that each kind of regime (democratic, oligarchic, and so on) makes laws in the interest of the ruling party in it (the mass of poor people in a democracy, or the rich in an oligarchy). “And they declare what they have made - what is to their own advantage - to be just for their subjects…

There is a single event in time whereby, in Western beliefs come from. It's not B.C.E. B.C. means before Christ. A.D., Anno Domini means "The Year of Our Lord". I will listen to you and your thoughts, but you've already tainted it.

@@teachphilosophy Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I'm old and back in college. I'm set in my ways in some things. I'm also seeking knowledge and truth. I'm willing to change my mind, and the way I think about things when I learn/hear things that are factual and true. Even if those things challenge my long held beliefs.
