Great gear. The Mcintosh amp is probably one of the least desired amps Mcintosh currently makes; no surprised that it is boring. Enjoy it, thank you for putting the video together, these videos take time to put together.

Very clever to use your sub as a bass trap! I think Gene of Audioholics and Bill D. owner and designer of Legacy Audio in Springfield Illinois mentioned that one of the best ways to correct a room with bass issues is sometimes to use multiple strategically placed subs with calibrated room correction. Love your Sopra I too own the No 3 and just like you I was going to buy B&w 802d3 and yeah they don't image well or sound nearly as good as the Sopras. I have a hybrid 7.1 + 2.ch system as well.

Hi, I only use the Rel for music, the other 2 as home theatre. It’s not acting as a bass trap more that it’s just out of phase at rear of room and helps cancel certain nodes and boom.

I was chomping at the bit when I saw someone paid 15K for a set of speakers and put a couch in front of one and them claim what a big holographic sound stage. Then I read the comments. I see Im not alone on this. Imagine if he got rid of the couch and placed those speakers properly in the room? Then the video goes on to all the little tweaks he has spent money on but the couch isnt even a thought? I dont get some people. This is not disrespect just common sense
@TheSteppenwolf666
@TheSteppenwolf666 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, I understand your frustrations as I had the same thoughts. Last year I moved from a much larger property which I originally bought the sopras for. When I arrived at my new flat I was horrified that the couch was going to block one of my speakers and considered buying a new couch. I can assure you that due to having a dedicated mid range on top and omni directional bass drivers it doesn’t effect anything. Not in the slightest. This has been confirmed to me by my dealers and many audiophile friends. The imaging is actually better than my last place! Centre image and vocalists are dead bolt centre like you could reach out and touch them. Sound pans effortlessly- dispersion and soundstage depth and width are unaffected. The bass is surprisingly quick and taut but deep and powerful. My dealer who is brutally honest (as he is also a friend I see out of business hours) said he couldn’t believe I got a system that big to sound so good in this room. Hope this helps clear things up. :-)

Justin, great system! You're always going to get naysayers. It's YOURS! That's all that matters. Half the folks are lowkey jealous. I really like the Imperial Red Sopra No. 2's! I wasn't as adventurous and decided to go with the Black to match the rest of my front-end. I've listened to many speakers in the Sopra's price range including Vandersteen's, Sonus Faber, Dynaudio, and Wilson Audio. And while all had their respective strengths, nothing combines the texture, clarity and sound staging ( some of the other sounded rather matted) as the Sopras.

@@TheSteppenwolf666 I agree. Sometimes you can have too much bass. My 2 subs are beside my mains and when they are at 0° it's all bass from the subs and overwhelms the mains. This makes my mains sound a bit thin and did not want to blend with my subs. I was tuning with phase knobs on the back of the subs and found they blended best when at 180°. Now my mains sound full and the subs blend in perfectly. Very nice system. Congrats. 👍 I've always loved Focal speakers.

Didnt quite get the crossover chestiness/ tweeter part- did he mean the high pass on the midrange? Anyway agree, fantastic speaker that does male vocals much better than the various Sonus Faber's, which usually cross a too small mid too low
@TheSteppenwolf666
@TheSteppenwolf666 4 жыл бұрын
The tweeter is crossed over lower and they really nail the timbre of vocals. It’s a feat that many speakers get wrong and these things on a good recording can give you that creepy feeling of the singer between the speakers taking up residence in the room. You can hear the urgency in voices. Any speaker that can do that at any price is a knockout in my book. Get the mids right and the rest falls into place - but these also happen to have really detailed extended treble and tight deep bass.
@meshplates
@meshplates 4 жыл бұрын
Nice Speakers that are suffocating perhaps in the corners. Maybe smaller speakers you could set away from the walls, front and sides would give a better overall result. The Rel sub connected only to the right channel is also not by the REL book. stereo still has separate bass right and left. A single sub should be connected to both channels to give you all the LF info.

Mark Donen Hi, thanks for watching. 95 percent of bass on recordings is identical in both speakers. 2 subs is more about soundstage and blending than anything. In my system I’m not doing that. I’m only using my sub to tighten bass being out of phase as if anything there previously was a bit too much bass energy from Sopras. I have the sub dialled in at 4 then I turn it up at low level for movies. The sopras just sound tighter and a bit deeper now. 😊
@meshplates
@meshplates 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheSteppenwolf666 all it takes would be connecting the sub to the L and R outputs on the amp. Bass is not always the same left and right. REL is an advocate of stereo subs for several reasons, one of which is bass is more directional than people believe.
@TheSteppenwolf666
@TheSteppenwolf666 4 жыл бұрын
Mark Donen I can only go by what Rob told me and my ears. Yes ideally use two stereo subs. Mainly older recordings like the Beatles use different bass signals (when you actually hear the soundstage go lopsided (like the bass from a drummer only coming from one speaker). For the majority of practical real works applications bar wanting a more even bass response with smaller speakers and an even bigger sounds stage one does the trick for my situation. Don’t forget sopras are still outputting 27hz of bass so when that drummer hits only in the left speakers bass you’ll feel it and hear it and won’t miss anything.

Hi Justin/ Thomas thank you for sharing and very happy your system is giving you real pleasure. I probably wouldn't have gone for the Focal as I find them a little too analytical and slightly metallic but that's just my ear. I would add I heard Focal floor standers with a vintage British Lumley integrated Tube Amp which sounded fantastic, so I guess amp partnering is all important with ruthless speakers. Could you say why you connected the REL in this way? Tapping off the speaker connection terminals is fine when you have two Subs running stereo but in your configuration you have to go with connection to the same amp to which your main speakers are connected. I had S3/SHO with my Proac Response 3.8's in the following configuration for use with class A/B (Red to Right Positive; Yellow to Left Positive; Black to either Right or Left Negative).That way you translate all the information and nuances contained in the stereo domain and achieve a better balance. Of course you could go "long Bow" Wireless which is very effective too. I now have two S3/SHO's subs in the stereo chain tapped directly off the L&R speakers, they are placed each side and slightly behind my Proacs. This combination is seamless and super fast and pressurize my 40 sq. /m room more evenly than one S5. That said you have a great system there, personal to you and that's all that counts ultimately.

Hi, thanks for watching, I used to have my sub wired to my power amp. For some reason the bass was muddier and less taut. Even though it’s a mono signal 95 percent of recordings have identical bass in both speakers. So I tried wiring it up to the right speaker, as I know they do this for stereo configuration at Rel trade shows. The bass was much tighter and deeper than on just the Mac. IMHO I prefer matching both the amp and speakers sound signature as opposed to just the amp. Ideally you’d want two stereo subs but I’m very happy with its current sound. I use it only to tighten bass as sopras have enough for a room. It’s dialled in at 4 then I turn it up to 15 on low level input to aid the other two subs for films. :-)

@@TheSteppenwolf666 I never experimented with that REL config when I had one, it just didn't occur to me as I was getting the underpinning and releasing the Proacs to do their thing from mid bass to the upoer registers really nicely. I don't really know if the combination is different sounding with a stereo pair tapped off the L&R speakers as current compared to one tapped of the amp its not a fair comparison but I am sold totally on the stereo set up in my room so glad I went for REL so fast so seemless. Enjoy your system bud, it really great.

Mark Donen Hi Mark - I was with REL a few months ago at an event. Saw subs hooked to to the speakers. Was advised by Rob to do this as he said it was worth trying due to using it to tune bass rather than add ; even though it’s not stereo. He’s high up, I think he’s senior manager here in the U.K so knows his stuff. In my room and application it sounded better. I use my ears and don’t get into Rel literature online. Sometimes it’s trial and error and you have to do strange things that aren’t the norm to get the results you need. Hope this helps. 😊

Gerald Holley It may not sound better in your room or for your purposes to hook it to the speaker (or speakers in stereo). as opposed to amp. For my situation it was a night and day improvement. Blends perfectly and deepens and tightens bass and expands soundstage in both directions. 😊

Nice setup, alot of moving parts to this system. The owner spoke of the Sopra 2's being bass heavy, might the placement of the speakers so close to the walls be the contributing factor? Do these speakers need room to breathe or is the room dimensions the culprit? I have the Kanta 2's placed 3' from the rear and 2.5' from the sides and I have good punchy bass not deep bass without subs but they are coming soon.

I have them 3 ft away from the wall and it is still bass heavy. If you love bass and have the room, Sopra 2 is the way to go. The Kanta 2 is no bass heavy compare to the Sopra 2 so in my upcoming review, I will go into more detail regarding that.

This system is outstanding and well presented and thought out. I agree with your assessment normally of built in subs with the exception that it depends on the manufacturer. I own a pair of Vandersteen Quatros and I can download some test tones and make adjustments to the back of the speakers so that the bass can match any room that they are placed in so the problem that you mentioned doesn't crop up. The problem is to be very effective you really need an extra person, one listening and one making tge adjustments. It really depends on how the manufacturer chooses to address this problem with built in subs. I have heard your speakers before and I agree with your assessments. Thanks for having him Thomas. I also thought of adding the Chord Quetest to my system as I have heard great things about it. What size hard drive do you use with your cd ripper and is the hard drive built in? We will see right now she isn’t speaking to me because I have only agreed to one of the things. yannick930 Hi and thank you 😊 Not a vinyl guy. Not a fan of the inconvenience - And have only heard it sound great at the super high end . I’m not into intermodulated distortion running alongside my music. I have tweaked this system to sound very analogue when the occasion is there in the recording - the entreq cable acts as RF antenna to introduce enough dithering to inject just enough musicality. and richness and some flesh without making it dark or cuddly so it still has snap and vitality. It’s a real balancing act between all the components thats taken a life time to nail. It’s detailed but can still sound really musical and rich on warmer recordings. Or more clinical on others. It basically apes what the recording gives. The les audio Isolators really helped as before my system was too dark and lacking that last bit of air but these gave me exactly what I wanted. Now I’m hearing deep into the mix and even faint background details that I previously couldn’t hear have their own acoustic space and decay into shimmering blackness. Our brains are so tuned into hearing timing errors. It’s almost spooky how much these isolators brought out. No expectation bias or placebo, it was night and day component level jump.

Still points and isolation are some of the cheapest and best tweaks to any system. Some people will say snake oil but there’s a reason amplifier CD and turntable manufacturers spend millions on R&D devoted to isolating vibrations and microphonic. If you want timing and prat which are ears and brains are tuned to everyone needs to look at isolation. It can be the difference between good and excellent. Component level upgrade
