That´s what so brillant about the sopranos. In every other tv show melfi would have told tony about it and the audience would have gotten some kind of satisfaction but here it´s left unresolved

I prefer The Sopranos and Deadwood. Both are more rewarding on re-watch and have so much to dig into character wise. The Wire is great though.

Excellent reaction, one of the best yet. It was heartbreaking and infuriating what happened to Dr. Melfi. I liked this ending and admire the restraint in the writing.

I'm with you on the revenge, I would want this guy dead too, but I also understand why she said "no". Not only it would be against her moral code (even if it feels tempting at the moment I think she wouldn't be able to live with it after), but more importantly it would be very unprofessional to ask for something like that to her patient. Melfi is a professional and I respect that. And writers handled it great, because yeah, we all wanted some satisfaction/justice here, but her saying "no" makes a lot more sense and fit her character perfectly. Love your sopranos reactions, keep it going :)

Also, once Tony does that favor for Dr. Melfi, she would owe him. She would be in his debt. Then she would be obligated to always say yes to anything Tony asked of her.

And also she would be the first person of interest if he was found dead.

I thought a great way to handle it would have been to have Tony find out from a news report. Something like the guy rapes another person & now he's being looked into for many others in the interest of being a serial rapist having done this before to a Dr Melfi a year ago but got off on a technicality. Tony would have taken him out then gotten rid of the guy as they always do & she wouldn't be in debt to him cause she never asked him to do anything. He would not hold that over her when she didnt say or ask anything of him. Would have been a good way to handle it is all. I am glad she didn't tell him & compromise her integrity but him fighting out separately would have been awesome!!! Side note, it makes me sick that people actually do this shit to people! How can you do that.....so horrible. Hope everyone is safe out there.

Characters you asked about in this episode: JACKIE APRILE, JR. is the son of Jackie Aprile (portrayed by Michael Rispoli) -- a former boss who died of stomach cancer (during the first season). Jackie is the young man that Tony Soprano feels some responsibility for. Tony was fiercely loyal to Jackie's dad (Jackie Sr.); so, Tony is trying to point Jackie in the right directly. He is disappointed that Jackie dropped out of college and has been taking a turn for the worse in terms of his prospects. RALPH "RALPHIE" CIFARETTO is a cocky but high-ranking "soldier" in the Aprile crew of the DiMeo crime family of New Jersey. He lived in Florida but returned following the disappearance of Richie Aprile (Jackie Sr.'s brother) the previous season. Despite being a pompous jerk, he is a good earner for the family. He is currently dating Jackie Jr.'s mom. Ralphie isn't the same rank as Tony. He is ranked below a boss, underboss and captain; so, Richie is much lower in rank that Tony. TONY SOPRANO - During Season 1 of The Sopranos, Tony is a capo (captain) -- the same position held by his father. However, he is promoted to the position of a de facto "boss" of the DiMeo crime family of New Jersey -- running things from behind the scenes while his uncle ("Junior" Sorprano) is figuratively in charge of the family. JOHN "JOHNNY SAC" SACRIMONI is the underboss of the New York crime family. He is a deeply old-school member of the mafia who places loyalty, family and honor as paramount. In this episode, Tony finds out that Johnny Sac bought a house in New Jersey (which worries him a bit because of territory and the appearance to others). Johnny Sac is married to GINNY SACRIMONI, the overweight woman with big hair (that you pointed out during the episode). Ginny is a kind-hearted woman and Johnny Sac deeply loves her.

Actually Ralph is is a NOT a soldier, he is a "made guy". BIG difference!
@ccchhhrrriiisss1006 жыл бұрын
Hi Julian. Most "made guys" start off as soldiers. Ralphie is no different.
@MrDarkkamui6 жыл бұрын
Yeah but at this point in the show he was already a "made guy" not a soldier. Not trying to be a dick or anything i just wanted to point that out because it's pretty important.
@ccchhhrrriiisss1006 жыл бұрын
@ Julian Thorn - At this point in the show, Ralphie is both a soldier AND a made guy. The term "made guy" doesn't refer to a specific rank. It is simply a term that he is a fully-initiated member of the (mafia) family. Christopher became a "made man" a few episodes earlier. Prior to that, he was merely an "associate." Once he became "made," he officially became a soldier. At this point (Season 3.4): Ralphie is a "made man" and soldier -- the same rank as Christopher. However, he was passed over for the rank of captain (in which Tony chose Gigi Cestone to be in charge of the Aprile team). Gigi is currently the captain (and a made man) while Ralphie is currently a soldier (and a made man) on that team.

To be fair, she doesn't have him at her disposal really, if she wanted anything done to that guy she would be indebted to Tony and then her life would be worse off. It's also great character of her to stick to her values, even though it would be understandable for her to want revenge. Tony isn't some good guy vigilante, he's a narcissistic mob boss :P

Remember when I told you that Janice was basically just Livia version 2.0 She is definitely her mother's daughter. And poor Tony, stuck in the middle (well,......not anymore, but still, same drama different female relative in his life. Lucky for him Meadow has more of Carm in her than she does her grandmother or aunt. .....although she also has her own drama).
@Cbricklyne6 жыл бұрын
And it's usually the same way in real life too. Children who clash with one of their parents the most, is typically because that's the parent they most take after, and vice versa with the parent clashing most with the child that takes on a lot of their personality and flaws. It was a great piece of writing by David Chase since he does the same thing with Tony and his kids as well. Tony was always telling Meadow that he's glad she takes after her mom more than him, and not surprisingly Meadow was always at loggerheads with her mom. Likewise, though he never actually said it, Tony's disappointments in AJ had a lot to do with some of the same flaws he saw in AJ (including real ones like Depression and panic attacks) that Tony thought he took from him.

Hi, American Mum: You probably know by now anyway, but the young guy whose mother is with Ralph is Jacky Jr. Aprile. Jacky Sr., his father, was a good friend of Tony's, and Boss of New Jersey, before he died of cancer. He made Tony promise to keep Jacky Jr out of Mob life, a promise Tony takes seriously but finds increasingly difficult.

Ugh I wanted her to tell him so bad too!! I wish Tony knew about the blood eagle so that when Melfi told him, he’d give that son of a bitch the blood eagle while she sat there and just listened to the sweet sound of his screams and cries ☺️

Jackie Jr. Is Jackie Aprile's son. Jackie was the boss of the Soprano family who died from cancer in season 1. Richie was Jackie's brother which make a him the uncle. That's why they were hanging together. Ralphie is dating Jackie Jr's mother Ro. Ralphie is a captain in the Soprano family. Johnny sack who is the guy who just moved to Jersey is the underboss of the New York family. Sopranos is the New Jersey family. The New York and Jersey crime families are separate but they work together sometimes. It gets confusing I Know

A little intell about the ranks of the italian/american mafia. On top you have the boss. Then comes the underboss, a seperate rank is consiglieri or advisor. He stands directly under the boss. Then comes the capos or captains or luitanants. Under them are the soldiers. And when you are not yet a made member you are a associate, it means that you work with a soldier for the family under a capo. Tony is a boss of the NJ family, at this point i tought Silvio is the consiglieri. Im not sure who Tony's underboss was. Then you have the capos Gigi(aprile crew), Well. There is a site with all the complete family tree brought under episodes. Dont watch the season 3 tree yet as it would contain spoilers for the current season www.azeemalim.co.uk/sopranos/sopranos-family-tree-season2.html have fun ☺️
@nickrubin73126 жыл бұрын
Paulie is technically underboss by now, in season 2, before bringing Furio in, Tony met with Pauile and told him that Furio and Big Pussy report to him, and he makes decisions with Silvio. But, that's technically, cause formally Tony is an acting boss/underboss and wasn't officially named boss, Junior still has got the title (Tony's idea), and Paulie is still a capo.
@AlphaWolfReacts6 жыл бұрын
Nick Rubin well. Im not sure but i remember a conversation with tony and paulie later on were he gets named underboss, i have to watch the show again closely but you could also be right 😅

Very disturbing yet ultimately cathartic episode. I do have some issues with it. I’m one of a few people who feel Bracco’s performance left something to be desired. And I have other problems that I can't really get into right now. Having said that, it’s still a searing installment with a great final moment. It’s just that for a few reasons I don't have it in my top 10-15 episodes like so many others would place it. Melfi’s rape (and arguably her whole arc up til this point) is a build up to that final one word declaration. Will this need for revenge pull her to the "dark side"? Will she allow herself to get drawn deeper into Tony's world? That dilemma makes the ending undeniably brilliant. And you don't even realize that that's the main conflict here until that last moment. Ralpie was mentioned in season 2. He's apart of Tony's family, though he's supposedly been in Florida for most of the past two seasons. Tony has three crews right now. Together those three crews form a mafia "family". The Aprile crew is ran by Gigi. Ritchie used to be captain of that crew. But of course, Ritchie is no longer with us. Tony passed over Ralphie for being captain of that crew and promoted Gigi instead, which is why Ralphie was annoyed during his meeting with Tony. Carmine (the old man Tony was talking to about his therapy last episode) is the boss of a seperate New York family. Johnny Sack (who just moved to New Jersey) is the underboss of that family. Does that make things a bit clearer?
