I wasn't aware a concept for a 6th game was completely scrapped, as a gigantic fan of the original Kirby Super Star this is both fascinating and extremely sad to know, the concept itself sounds incredible.

Kirby super star was a banger, though a bit on the easier side for games in general of its erra (except arena). Once you take the shield build + shock charge power it becomes easy. Without it, it's hard. Before that discovery, rock was the go-to power.

I like Sakurai’s reaction to Miyamoto’s idea. One of the most famous figures in the company at the time asks you to implement a brand new feature into your series at a time when people were still figuring onscreen co-op out. That had to be motivating but at least a little scary

I will never not enjoy how Sakurai uses this channel to *truly* lift the veil on what goes on behind the making of video games. Seeing him casually talk about things ranging from cut modes and ideas, to elements of his games which he wish had turned out differently in the format of a 7-minute KZbin video is insane. All I can think now is how has the idea of Kirby being unable to suck up his foes never appeared in another Kirby game? (Outside of Epic Yarn, if you count that.)

The later games polish parts of this diamond but they don't exactly make the same bold moves with progression or change up the level structure much (other than amazing mirror) or pioneer bigger lasting evolutions like adding powers or movesets. It’s great that so many people connected with the game and it’s structure. Kirby Super Star was one of the first games I ever played and one of my most played back in the day. Even though I had a GameCube as a toddler, I was still sucked into that game and very impressed with the sprawling world of Great Cave Offensive and the crazy secrets in Milky Way Wishes, to say nothing of some of the best sprites, music, and sound design of that generation. The copy abilities were a ton of fun to play with, and the personality-filled hats were all it took to make Kirby one of my favorite game characters. The co-op was also some of the best fun I had playing a game with my brother, thanks in no small part to the asymmetrical aspects that let him keep up with me even as I rushed through the levels. I actually like the surreal nature of the game too and think the backgrounds are neat historically speaking. It puts the game in a period of time, at the cusp of 3D gaming. But that was how much I loved the game back then, I wanted to 100% complete every single sub game and find everything possible! Super Star was so packed with secrets in a way that felt genuinely exciting. And the fact that my dad could play along with me as one of the helper characters was so cool. Looking back at it, I definitely see some of the DNA that ended up in Smash Bros, like the shielding, or the suplex ability that allows you to grab and throw foes, or just the sheer ambition of so many different modes and mini games! The music is insanely good, and villains like Marx are still some of the most unsettling in the series. His demonic transformation at the end really catches you off guard in a mostly kid friendly game like this. Truly one of the greatest and most charming platformers of all time.

This was one of the first video games I ever played and it's still my all time favorite. Thank you for giving us a glimpse into how it was made, and it's especially interesting to learn about the cut game mode.

Hearing the original 6th game in Super Star honestly sounds really interesting in concept for Kirby to tackle on. A lite-horror themed Kirby game sounds like it could be cool in hindsight depending on the execution. Especially not being able to fly nor inhale enemies.

I can't thank Sakurai enough. Kirby Super Star was my first and probably most import gaming reference. I grew up to this game, it's amazing OST, the graphics, etc. Sakurai is a true genius and should be recognized as such. Cheers from Brasil!

The helper concept was such a great way to build inclusivity in games. Perfect for being able to play together with a younger sibling, your own children, or spouse without the added stress of needing to be good at the game. I have enjoyed many games with my kids thanks to the helper concept. Also, your thoughts on learning and applying concepts (even in failure) mirror my own philosophy on content creation and the channel I share with my children. I may not be making viral videos or get acclaims for the work I produce, but "the things you make today can lead to what you make tomorrow." I'm challenging myself every day and who knows what it may lead to later on. Thank you again for sharing you experience and insight.

I was wondering about the omnibus format the other day. There was a trend at the time to split the game up, like with Live A Live, and Fire Emblem with its two books and generations. Now I understand it was made so even if you only beat parts of it, you still had a full and satisfying experience.

That's why Smash Bros is so good. Masahiro has the ability to max out different character feel ingrained into his creative process based on his history with Kirby's skill absorption. No one else could do it like he does.

The absolute humility of this man, calling out "flaws" in his own game... never seen a game dev so meticulous of their work, it's cool to see what he'd have done differently if not limited by a company.

I'm a big fan of Super Star, and this video was super interesting to me. Like seeing how Making a helper would have drained some health is weird to me since you do it so naturally in the final game. I guess Sakurai was applying his risk reward formula to that aspect of the game since two characters is pretty strong, although iirc having two characters leaves them with less overall health compared to a single player which helps balance it. And the Kagero mansion subgame sounds like it would have been awesome and challenging with not using Kirby's mouth based abilities. Sakurai's game making stories are always so interesting to me

My older brother and I went at this game hard as kids. We would play it so often, mainly with him as Kirby and me as Player 2. I was never bothered by it much, as I made use of my role with all the various characters and never having to worry about death as much since Kirby could revive me by giving up a power. As such, I made myself the shield for my brother to ensure Kirby didn't die.

This video was so good! Seeing how wild and uncharted everything was at the time, how developers tried to navigate through it, and seeing Sakurai-Sensei attempting to contain his exasperation from Miyamoto-San's quick request leaving a devastating blow, like a single side attack at 300% damage. This is gold.

This was my favorite game ever for a long time. We had so much playing this game in co-op with a friend. I remember especially that part where you could copy that wheel. Then you turned it into a friend and kirby could sit on top of it and throwing little stars. Thank you Mr. Sakurai for so much hours of fun on this game back then!

I remember those Macintosh computers. It's so strange to think that some of my favorite games were made with such relatively primitive technology. Today we have emulators, flash memory, network shares... but back then you had EPROM, expensive hardware debuggers, and very little space.
