I was about 12 years old when Sorcerer premiered in NYC and I was in Times Square and wanted to go to Star Wars, but it had a line about 2 blocks long, so I gave up and wandered across the street and saw the marquee for Sorcerer. I saw the great movie poster with the truck, and said I got to see this. And I knew about Friedkin and Scheider. So I walked right in to the empty theater. No line at all and about 18 people in the theater. It blew my socks off. I'd never seen anything like it on the big screen. And the music was hypnotic. I went and bought the s/t on lp and the movie poster for it at a Greenwich Village movie poster store. Still have both to this day and now the dvd. Now I watch it about once a year. Epic film. Hard to believe how bad it got attacked by the critics back then. I was like Did they see the same movie I saw? Never understood it. Great to see it get some love and that Friedkin got to enjoy it along with anyone else still alive who worked on it. Great show, guys.

Sorcerer was a dark ass PG-rated movie. They just hit different in the 70's.

This is such a great episode. RIP Friedkin so happy so many film festivals started to show it the past few years and Friedkin was there to see it and talk about it,

A great film. I saw it for the first time about 10years ago at NY's Film Forum. A remastered print w Friedkin live Skyping at our viewing. Charming man. who welcomed us to ask him questions. One of the most incredible shots is that explosion in Jeruselem. WOW. I got to ask him if he was going to release a remastered version of To Live and Die in La and the whole theater erupted in cheers and applause. SUCH a terrific no-nonsense director. We wont see his like again.

It sttill amazes me that y'all get so much fun background info and personal opinions in just 1 Fucking Hour, especially this episode, about one the most beautiful and incredible movies ever made! R.I.P. William Friedkin (one of my top five directors of all time). Btw, I hope y'all gonna do another 1977 movie one day, Donald Cammell's ''Demon Seed'', but also his ''Performance'' (with Nicholas Roeg) & ''White of the Eye''.

Hey guys, I'm a new viewer here. Very glad I stumbled across this podcast! Sorcerer is the film back in 2020 that got me back into watching classic 60s/70s cinema. It's an all time favorite now. I love the choices you guys are picking such as Targets, Wake In Fright, Don't Look Now, Talk Radio...films that people rarely talk about except right here. I've only watched/listened to a few episodes. But I got to catch up on more. Great discussions! The '78 Body Snatchers I'd love to hear your thoughts on.

I like your video covering one of the greatest films ever made. It must of nice working with Fiendkin on your documentary. I already knew most everything you covered about Sorcerer. The film is a masterpiece and timeless, it's great to in see the past 10 years or so that the film is finally getting the attention it deserves. I saw it when it was released in 1977 and I wanted to see the film because I read in a music magazine that Fiendkin used Keith Jarrett's "Hymns Spheres" pipe organ music in his latest film. I already had Jarrett's album. I've seen many reviews and discussions about Sorcerer and everyone thinks that Tangerine Dream did the pipe organ music which is wrong. "Hymns Spheres" is in the credits towards the end and can be easily missed. The restored version is amazing.

I went to see sorcerer twice the one week it was on in Gainesville FL. I loved it so much the first time I invite my doctoral mentor and his wife to see it. It has left an indelible impression on me. Oh, and by the way, I never went to see Star Wars and haven’t seen I up to now.

Sure McQueen would've made more money but in the end the fear in scheiders face and eyes suits the bleak unfolding and end of this film better. And sorcerer is a perfect name ; gunpowder reminds me of alchemy and sorcery, and beyond that; the sorcerer is mankind; pulling oil from the earth and wielding it so, crafting gunpowder and lighting the place up.

Had no idea he died… and was just watching a bunch of his interviews by chance. The newer movie he made with mcconaghey was amazing (Texas Joe?) I forget the name- but it’s an amazing movie as well. Legendary director . Really smart guy too .. love how he put so much effort into the audio of his films. RIP

This comment may turn silly. I'm so glad this was arbitrarily chosen. I can't think of another film that captures fire as astoundingly... I think David Lynch may get aroused by the flames in this film. I wonder though why "The Last Waltz" was not chosen for '78, bypassing the poll in honor of Robbie Robertson. I'm assuming because Martin was the director or because a concert film doesn't fit the format.
@clintonorman2859 Жыл бұрын
Nah they're squares and don't like roots music! Last Waltz is an amazing morality fable couched in a concert movie, total brain child of Scorcese w. Robertson as his "assistant." A concert movie with no shots of the audience, focuses on interactions between the musicians. Doesn't get enough love. In fact a lot of people hate The Band... specially experimental music heads.
@hidikitalks Жыл бұрын
Oh... Everyone loves The Band. My channel has only ""Experimental"" "music" and I cant't sleep sometimes because of The Band.

Great discussion on a film i find is not talked about enough when it comes to Friedkin as it is always French & Exorcist. Count me in as one of those who was disappointment to learn that this movie was about truck when i was a kid. To learn the title is taken from a Miles Davis song, magnificent as much as this film revisiting later on. What an awesome movie

It helps to be a Tangerine Dream fan. The music accompanies the film wonderfully.

I've always been curious about Sorcerer but have avoided watching it cause I had already seen Wages of Fear and thought it was one of the best films I'd seen at the time at least, it's hard to get excited about an American remake of an already perfect film

Great episode guys. I'm a guy who wrote 90 percent of Wikipedia page on the film. I have one thought I'd like to share - the truck assembly montage set to Tangerine Dream music. Don't you think it is a predecessor to Michael Mann's style? Especially something like Thief. To me, Sorcerer begat the 80s-style montage in the vein of Michael Mann. Would you agree?

For sure the title "contributed" to this movie being a flop. It felt like a bait and switch to people who weren't paying close attention. I remember assuming it was a horror movie at the time. Ironically, I didn't go see it, mainly because it was getting bad word of mouth. It seems I was one of those very people I mentioned who wasn't paying close attention!! lol I didn't get hip to this movie until much later, probably the 90's. Now I own a copy, and I love it.

In your opinion, what's his most underrated movie? Cruising, Boys in the Band, and To Live and Die, don't count. I've recently watched The Brink's job and thought that it was a pretty decent low-key comedie. Blue Chips is also cool.
@OneFuckingHour Жыл бұрын
Blue Chips is very fun, but I’d say Rampage. It has some faults but also some really interesting stuff
@ricardocantoral767210 ай бұрын
Basically, this is The Treasure of The Sierra Madre of the 1970's. Sorcerer is a symphony of human misery and a hell of a thrill ride. Way better than any CGI spectacle being cranked out of Hollywooden. However, I am sorry to say, I think there is one painfully conspicuous flaw. That's the title, it's dumb as hell. Sorry, but even when it's explained, it's still dumb. Bill Friedkin should have simply called the movie The Wages of Fear because it's the heart of the material. Simple and right to the point.

I think the Star wars part really didn't matter. People can go out to more then one movie. It wasn't a commercial movie. It has almost no recognizable faces besides Roy, lots of subtitles, unlikeable characters, a horrible misleading title.

mel gibson is a narcissistic psycho who spent most of his career making smarmy pap before graduating to directing movies nobody in their right mind would sit through, and is now starring in things nobody gives a shit about. he hasn't been cool since he was making indies back in australia. he's basically a crazy old man sitting on a street corner at this point, complete with a big beard and a crazy stare. also, you just insulted everybody who struggles with alcoholism by using it to excuse his behavior.
