Sorcerer guitarist Peter Hallgren comments: “Black Sabbath is an endless source of inspiration for writing good music in whatever style of hardrock and metal” and to quote singer Anders Engberg “You can hear it in the early Sorcerer songs, that we are a lot about Black Sabbath. Maybe we tend to mix in the more melodic parts - more like the Dio and Tony Martin era albums - in the music we make today. For me ‘When Death Calls’ is one of the strongest songs I think they have written. A really doomy song, which in my opinion sounds a lot like the music we create in Sorcerer. After having a blast recording ‘Gates Of Babylon’, we decided to give covering another spin. ‘When Death Calls’ was unanimously chosen as the track to go for!”

@@justinbiggs4620 one of the reasons, supposedly, is because the rights to the these records lie with (defunct) IRS Records, or so I heard. Apparently Tony is trying to get it sorted out so they can be re-releaded properly

The Tony Martin years (especially the "Headless Cross" album) were massively influential to the European power metal wave in the nineties and beyond. That influence in America was, unfortunately, not as great due to the competing hair metal/grunge trends, but I loved all the nineties Sabbath albums.
@MetalAsylumNJ

There was nothing wrong with "hair" glam metal, great genre lots of great bands, albums and songs. Hell, Van Halen were the first. It was the trendy grunge and alternative in the 90s, and then the worst abomination of all the trendy anti metal nu metal that was the problem.
@wheezerYT
@wheezerYT 2 жыл бұрын
I think the Sabbath purist dimwits were a major problem here, too. "It's not Ozzy!" "It's not Dio!" WAAAAAH! Yes, I know why both guys were vital to metal, but they eventually did their own thing(s), too. However, Sabbath soldiered on, and the Tony Martin albums were terrific!

Sharon being a vindictive bitch and strong arming venues to not have post Ozzy Sabbath play there and a shit record deal with I.R.S. were major factors. Tony Martin era Sabbath is an overlooked monster.

I was in high school when Headless Cross and Tyr were released, so the Martin years are "my" era of Sabbath, and hands down my fave. And yeah, that incarnation was highly influential in the Swede scene and beyond, with Sorcerer (beginning with their demo comp from '95), Evergrey, Tad Morose, Mundanus Imperium, and many more.

The Tony Martin era of Black Sabbath is certainly underrated. Regardless, Bands like Sorcerer are bringing fans of the old Sabbath and fans of RJDio/Ranbow to this age in time of underated greatness of musical genius that is often overlooked by algorithms and what "they" (big corporate music) want you to focus on. Kudos to the fantastic band "Sorcerer" for this excelant tribute to an overlooked classic from the "Headless Cross" album.
