While Emil's still lifes were nicely done, Dines, his son, was truly a brilliant painter. I used to study Dines 'The Jade Bowl' at the Indianapolis Art Museum, of all places, and am still impressed by how clean his lines were, especially at the edges of the copper plate. He learned great technique from his father, but took it much further to a masterful level of understanding and rendering tonal images with something of a drybrush, or scumble effect to add texture to the surfaces, especially the backgrounds. He also understood how to round edges, as in cups, small containers, etc. without sacrificing proper perspective, as seen so often in modern still lifes. And the placement of simple elements in what feels like a natural composition, is consistent with his polished work. Well worth a trip if you haven't seen the original, or others at various museums in the US.

Impressive still lifes betraying the influence of Chardin and Van OS...his , less known , landscapes , however , have not the same pictorial power and are left as if unfinished...
