Probably not. As amazing as conservators can be, they only really get "noticed" if they did an awful job and ruined something in a piece of artwork, and then it's by the new conservator cursing them. Baumgartner is doing a good job so it's unlikely the painting will ever need a new conservator--so there's no one to notice the work he put into it.

@@lavenderhearts5751 I must be Chaotic Good. Love starting out with studio in perfect order. My closets, even down to my linens & shoes, lined up by type & colors. I'm amused by people who can't understand why I then make a huge mess throughout, only to pickup after myself while they're over, like I'm the errant child, while creating: because I completely let go! Closets are orderly. But fine linen and bare, folded art canvases are stored on opposite sides of the same closet! Please don't confuse them, I don't want to primer over your food stain!😂

...and I just happened to be watching another person restoring a painting, the guy starts ripping the back of the canvas off and I start yelling; You animal! What are you doing, you're going to destroy the painting! Baumgartner is having some influence on me. Now I question myself at work, ok, so nobody will probably notice, but will I be proud? What if someone else sees it. What will it say about me. 🤔 I'm going to have to stop watching his videos. I think it's turning me into a more ethical and thoughtful person.

Maybe quite sensible at the time if it was done during the war - probably likely the painting had to be transported somewhere safer than wherever it had been, and the frame needed to be made more inconspicuous - just, maybe wasn't intended to be left for quite as long as it was.

Little trick for handling gold leaf: take a square of wax paper and lay it over the leaf, then lift up. This will allow you to remove it from the packet one sheet at a time and transfer it freely. I bind books which means I do gilding for edges as well as cover art, and this trick has made the process so much easier and less wasteful.

I always play a game when I go to any museum; find the one piece (and one only) that you would want in your home. If possible, get something to remind you of it from the souvenir shop but always take as good a picture as you can and keep those images of The One Thing in a separate folder on your PC or whatever with the when, where and what details of your discovery of it, and maybe even why you like it. It's like a photo album of your tastes and preferences, personal and unique. It's very interesting to go back and see yourself that way over time.

Since I'm a retired Chemist I'm interested in what "solvents" he uses and at what times. Of course it is never mentioned in the video but at about the 9:25 minute mark here I see that he adds what is possibly water, then a heavier immiscible solvent that separates at the bottom (Methylene Chloride maybe?) then another liquid that enables the two previously immiscible solvents to mix. (I'm guessing that is Isopropyl alcohol). This kind of customized mixing of different solvents I assume is what makes it possible to vary the concentrations of any of the solvents depending on the requirements of each individual task. Yes I'm a bit of a geek but it is fascinating to me.

So question for you: I get that when he uses a solvant to remove the water based glue he applied at the beginning he doesn’t damage the painting in the process, but how is he able to apply a solvent that removes the bees was and not damage the painting?..

@@Maxime-ho9iv I mean a solvent is just a solution that's able to dissolve things. Like water could dissolve the glue from the beginning. Julian makes a bunch of tests before he starts working on a project, so he can see which of the solvents in his studio are going to remove the different layers he needs off without risking harm to the paint layer.

I am so glad the issue of light was presented. As a former negative retoucher and vice president of the company, an having trained hundreds on how to retouch over the years, I found light is just as important if not more important and any other point of information. We used light boxes and did our own testing to find the best light for each type of photograph to be printed. From outdoors in each phase of the day to student yearbook photos, light was a major factor in providing us with the image in truth. Thank you for sharing your work with us!

Also as a photographer you are spot on with the kelvin! 5200k is direct sunlight with no cloud coverage 4950-5000k is sunlight bouncing off of white walls in a large room with floor to ceiling windows. 4800k is a room “basked in sunlight” or a small white room with a large window. Your lighting settings for viewing and retouching are PRIME!!! Oh how the arts collide! Much respect!
