Probably not. As amazing as conservators can be, they only really get "noticed" if they did an awful job and ruined something in a piece of artwork, and then it's by the new conservator cursing them. Baumgartner is doing a good job so it's unlikely the painting will ever need a new conservator--so there's no one to notice the work he put into it.

Since I'm a retired Chemist I'm interested in what "solvents" he uses and at what times. Of course it is never mentioned in the video but at about the 9:25 minute mark here I see that he adds what is possibly water, then a heavier immiscible solvent that separates at the bottom (Methylene Chloride maybe?) then another liquid that enables the two previously immiscible solvents to mix. (I'm guessing that is Isopropyl alcohol). This kind of customized mixing of different solvents I assume is what makes it possible to vary the concentrations of any of the solvents depending on the requirements of each individual task. Yes I'm a bit of a geek but it is fascinating to me.
@Maxime-ho9iv2 жыл бұрын
So question for you: I get that when he uses a solvant to remove the water based glue he applied at the beginning he doesn’t damage the painting in the process, but how is he able to apply a solvent that removes the bees was and not damage the painting?..

@@Maxime-ho9iv I mean a solvent is just a solution that's able to dissolve things. Like water could dissolve the glue from the beginning.
