Because sororities exclude people who don't "fit." That's all fine until they start championing diversity and meeting "lots of different people" as a reason to join.

Most women of color choose to join one of the divine 9 sororities, which are historically black sororities. There is also some poc women who feel like they wouldn’t get into a sorority because of their race, which while that might have been true in the past, is absolutely false in 2019.

I'm not sure it'd be based just on looks because as she said, they get to talk a lot so I guess girls are chosen if their personalities matches the sorority. (But I have to say that it's confusing, every girl she filmed in this video was super pretty so idk… ahah) Other than that, I agree and I was thinking about it during the video. I also live in Europe (in France actually) and that's something that would never happen here so that's a bit weird to imagine. Eventhough I like that they all donate to charity, I didn't know they're doing that

It is. But as some people are saying, it has a lot to do with conversations as well. If you're shallow enough, you can be appealing to...certain sororities (lol). As far as philanthropy goes, I think that her sorority has a particularly banal philanthropy-not to say that in order for it to be meaningful it has to be unique-but I can think of a dozen causes off the top of my head that need more help and money than St. Jude's.

I wanted to join Greek life because I’m very introverted and thought it would make it easier to make friends and gain a little social group but when you filmed all the girls in your sorority, it made me really nervous and kind of not want to do it because I’m not skinny and pretty like all of them 😂😂 And I feel like I would just be an odd one out 😂

Bella Weirdo no no no!!! Most sororities aren't superficial, and trust me, you don't have to stick thin to fit in! I definitwly am not super skinny, but my sisters love me regardless. I'm introverted too, and I think you should give recruitment a shot. If it feels weird, then you can always drop.

Bella Weirdo - omg girl, I felt the same way! I’m going to Mizzou currently and I was very nervous to rush, and being honest, a lot of the sororities were so superficial and about looks and parties, etc. but as soon as I walked into mine for the first time, it was perfect! They loved me for me and I didn’t have to pretend, I was totally comfortable. I would give it a try and if you aren’t comfortable/don’t enjoy the experience, you can always drop. But it’s worth a try!

So I’ve started college since I’ve made this comment and I just wanna let you know that I did not end up joining a sorority but I have met and made friends with SO MANY girls who are in a bunch of different sororities and some are so incredibly amazing and sweet and some are little introverted and mean. But it’s okay! They definitely are not like they seem in movies and tv. I’m glad I didn’t join a sorority because I know now that it just isn’t for me but I’m so grateful for the girls I met who are involved in them! Never let stereotypes or rumors keep you from making all of the friends you can!! My freshmen year of college was so amazing and I met so many great people and I came out of my shell a lot.

honestly I've heard so many people talking about sorority and rushing and all that stuff and I still have no clue at all what it means, what the purpose of it all is, how it works etc... I'm from Europe and we don't do anything of that kind ... could someone please explain in a VERY simple way what this is/how it works etc because for me this sounds pretty much like joining a cult and the girls are trying to figure out which cult to join?:D (not trying to sound rude)

Basically. Although some tout the benefits of Greek life - it's a great way to meet friends, get involved in campus activities, participate in service projects and volunteering, network with alumni from the sorority you're in, and go to dope parties

and why can't you just chose your sorority straight away? like why do you have to go through all these different rounds, dressing accordingly and ''waiting'' for them to convince you? and also why is this just a girls thing like why aren't the boys allowed to take part in this? this is just so new to me haha I really can't get my head around

Recruitment was (from my experience) SO tiring and draining 😂 but SOOOO worth it! I’m a fall ‘17 and now I’m going on spring break this year with a couple girls in my house & im so close with all the girls.. 10/10 recommend going through recruitment even if you don’t think it’s for you

I think it’s about being in a brotherhood/sisterhood. Building relationships. Getting involved with tons of activities, volunteering. Also partying from what I heard. Many politicians in American have been a member of fraternity / sorority

Mina Yuan I did it because I wanted to expand my network beyond people in my major and activities. Plus there are scholarships, and yes social events. For me as an alumna, I still go to events with women 50 years older than me who are in the same sorority.

For me all of this does just looks like it's absolutely not for people with anxiety 😂 I feel like you get too much convinced to do everything as a group and party & the charity part isn't that intense. Idk. It's wired 🙈

I honestly don’t know whether I want to rush at UNC or not. The whole process seems really grueling and insulting. I’m also extremely introverted and everyone is just telling me “just rush and you can drop out if it’s not for you.” I’m having such a hard time making this decision because obviously I want to attend parties and be a part of something, but I also don’t want to go through the recruitment process.

I was incredibly introverted when I started college and was never going to rush, but i got to know a lot of very down to earth girls who were members of sororities. Although people get stressed out over the selection process, I had never heard of girls being mistreated (spit on) until this video. You can get to know girls going through rush even if you don't end up joining one of the sororities. I would say, make sure you have confidence in yourself, so the potential of being dropped by a sorority is not devastating. I know, even though I had no desire to join one, I think rush would have been interesting but would have been hurt to be dropped. Use it as a chance to get to know some people and to decide whether the "greek" life is for you. Maybe waiting until your second year on campus would be a good idea.

I have to remind everyone that EVERY chapter is different. I am in the same national sorority by in no way did they spit at us or ever degrade or insult any of us. Every school and sorority is different.

Hi! One thing I've always wondered about sororities is how recruitment week lines up with your school schedule. I've always been someone who tries not to skip classes, and I'm worried that I would have to during rush. At my university, rush is a full week long, meaning that I would definitely have to skip class at some point or another. When does rush week happen (1st week of school, beginning of semester, etc?) Is there someone I would be able to talk to to be excused on certain days or times?

As someone who is also involved in greek life, I would also recommend people look at cultural sororities/fraternities! They tend to offer a different vibe and are smaller than other groups. Most schools tend to have different councils and I would recommend looking through all the different councils to see which one fits best for you and your interests!
