Police “repeatedly failed” to spot warning signs about his “unsuitability for office”, a damning report concluded amid fears many more women and girls could have been victims of Couzens.
Publishing her findings on Thursday, inquiry chairwoman Lady Elish Angiolini warned without a radical overhaul of policing practices and culture, there is “nothing to stop another Couzens operating in plain sight”.

The current situation at the Metropolitan Police is very dangerous. There are people in uniform who cannot speak or understand English. Have not had a vigorous examination of their past, and have been employed due to ethnicity not ability. Just as the one question of Muslim recruits " does Israel have a right to exist" and this group would be minimised greatly. Ask a black recruit if " stop and search" should be the norm. (Sarcasm, of course) Yes, there are hideous examples of officers, like Cousens and it baffles me and many like me, who cannot comprehend how officers like him get into the job, or remain in the job. I was highly vetted when I joined with home visits etc, so perhaps it was cost cutting that caused him to ‘slip the net?’ The police are far from perfect, but we’ve endured a lot from recent governments that cut our numbers to the core in the name of austerity. Our moral was often low, but we still strived to give the best service we could under the circumstances. It ain’t great, but just imagine a country with no law enforcement whatsoever….

This shows an appalling decline in Police standards. When I joined the Met in 1987 (I stayed only a short time), I was investigated incredibly thoroughly as were all my family members and previous employers - if I had had so much as 3 points on my license, I don't think they would have hired me.

Yep the vetting process was pretty stringent back then. My ex partner joined in 2001 and was too vetted in the same thorough way. I was looked into without my knowledge and cleared. It’s a wonder how the vetting standards could be dropped and justified….

In 1975 I joined the police force at 18. I was interviewed, I was told to leave the house while a Sergeant individually interviewed my mum, dad and two sisters. My adjoining neighbours in our road were interviewed and they got references from my school and my present employer. I was told in no uncertain terms that to be accepted I had to have a totally clean sheet,and that was before training college and two years probation when you could be instantly dismissed for bringing the force into disrepute.

An recruitment into the police has got even easier, as most is online now. Many police forces have cases of fraud recruiting, were some police constables have got other to do the online tests. It has also been found that some police constables are computer literate yet passed all the online tests. Vetting is very poor and has been for over 20 years. Then we have as part of the interview process recruits being interviewed by people in religion the same religion that is all over the news at the moment. An if that religious person doesn’t like you, then your classed as unsuitable for the police. The thing is to much interference from everyone, they should go back to the old process in which it is all done face to face, including the testing. Vetting needs to be followed through correctly. There is no need to have this investigation by the police themselves n the police. It should be going directly to a court of law. Only 5he other day the police wasted taxpayers money on one of 5heir investigations on a chief inspector who was found guilty in a court of law, but the police still have to waste tax payers money to have their investigations and inquiry to ban him from serving again. It doesn’t make sense. Convicted in a court of law then they are sacked. Why can’t the police be like any other job? You break the rules or law your sacked without a pension. It’s not hard to sort out.
