As digitals go, some of those stops are actually quite nice, especially being from the 70s. I’m glad you’re showing a digital. The organ world is slowly dying and organs are disappearing. Better a digital than nothing at all. Thanks for sharing!

Don't apologise for showing us a digital organ. Compared with some of the organs you have visited, this is a really nice sound and of perfectly in tune unlike some of the real organs you have showed us. I suppose the speaker quality is all important and presumably there is more than one in the speaker case.

I get criticism for showing digitals, hence the apology in advance. It is a nice organ, just a shame about the speaker which needs some attention. As far as I know just the local speaker below the console and the large one on the wall (not sure what’s within the case). But yes, nice to have an organ that’s nicely in tune!

Thanks for another nice organ. Most people can't tell the difference between a digital organ and pipe organ. I don't see why every church should have a pipe organ.

Most organists can certainly tell the difference, but I agree that most members of the congregation probably can’t. This is certainly a nice one, just a shame about the speaker 👍

i played for years a similar digital organ in the church. i was always not decided if i use this or the small one keyboard pipe organ with only 6 registers! Because the digital organ is great to practice and know the literature, but the sound was very like plastic and the dry reverb made me crazy. Maybe there was a setting for the reverb. The pedal board was of course very motivating! but we all start small. Today i have 8 organs at disposal, and probably 3 in another city, included one where great composers played ; ) I am curious to test the new generation of home organs, and finally be free!

Some digital organs are great. The one at Bushbury Crematorium in Wolverhampton sounds beautiful it has power. I think it has a 32ft reed however I’m not sure. The most unusual place I have seen a digital organ is at Dublin Airport.

Makin built a few digital organs based on the Bradford system, but then in the early 90s they stopped building their own organs altogether. Since then Johannus have been building Makin organs for them, using Johannus console designs and technology, but with Makin defining the stoplists and supplying the sound samples.

@@OrganicVisitationsDigital is the way to go instead of having to take care of a pipe organ when it falls apart, along with constant upkeep, which is very expensive here in the states. With digital sound, you get the same as you would if you had an actual pipe organ.......without the hassle. I have a Viscount Chorum 90 at my Lutheran church and it has four Organs on it.........A Silbermann, Schlicker, Cavaille-Coll, and an American Eclectic. Prior to that I played a horrible Lowery "Baseball" organ that made us sound like we were at a baseball game instead of church.🤪🤪 LOL!!!🤣🤣 I hated it!!!!😝😝 Now we sound like we're actually in church now. 💙💙

As with many digital organs, they sound fine with stops in isolation or when a very few ar used. But once you begin to play many at once or tutti, it sounds blaring and tinny.

The sound has a great deal to do with the related sound system. Too often the investment in the sound system is lacking when, in a digital system, it's actually more important than the instrument. The Allen Quantum at the church I attend has two "walls" of speakers which do not choke at any point -- even given 32' Bombards.

Just to let you know this organ is not from the 1970s. If it was it would not be digital (they only started appearing in the 80s and 90s) and it is almost unheard of for a 70s Makin to still be in a church. The organ is Makin MT 328 installed in March 1995. It certainly sounds like the speakers need some attention and this would improve the sound dramatically.

The "manual bass" isn't a chord generator. If you play a chord on the Great, it will play the bottom note of that chord on the selected pedal stops as well, making it possible to play hymns (and with care, certain other music) on the manuals only, and yet still get a pedal effect.
@OrganicVisitations

The digital organ in the Crematorium in Belfast has this sort of manual bass coupler. Its a great feature for a hack like me. I've also see it the other way around, where it will couple the highest note in your right hand to the swell. So you can play everything on the great like it's a piano with no sustain.

A very enjoyable demonstration -- the instrument and installation seem adequate for the room and congregation; it has surprisingly good sound sources or samples, whichever is the case. I would have loved to hear at least a few fragments of a few representative pieces played demonstrating some of the typical registrations and combinations. Of course real (good-quality, scaled, well-voiced and in-tune) pipes -- even if only a few ranks - in a good acoustic are the pinnacle of organ experience, "non-optional" for those with purists ears. However, with the advances in digital instruments, a well-designed and set-up digital instrument can easily out-shine many an average-to-poor pipe instrument, and can be a happy blessing to many a congregation. I think the "default" stigma of digital instruments -- justifiably-earned from the earlier instruments -- is waning. In particular, the advent of sampling, Hauptwerk, etc. makes it possible to play any number of world-famous organs in their acoustic. For a few thousand dollars/pounds/euros, a small country church can have a cathedral organ (no tuning required) -- it seems to be a reasonable trade-off, with little apologies required. Given that this console seems to have MIDI available, an Hauptwerk installation might be an option to consider. It's been said that the most important stop on an organ is the room (acoustic), and judging from your voice, the acoustic of this room is reasonably kind and supportive. Digital reverb can be helpful if not over-done - especially in a dry, carpeted sanctuary. Too much reverb becomes muddled and unpleasant; generally the least amount needed is better, which seems to be the case here. Given the natural acoustic, the added amount of reverb seems just about right, although it seems to be bordering on a bit too much with fuller registrations. I'd be interested to hear the contrast of backing the reverb back to Max / 1 , or perhaps Min / 4. In the trade-off of a digital instrument for real pipes in a good acoustic, the speaker/sound system becomes as much as 50-percent of the installation if not more. Given a limited budget, it would be better to cut back on the instrument in deference to the sound system. A $10K instrument will sound much better through as $40K sound system than a $40k instrument will sound through a $10k sound system -- and the instrument can always be upgraded. In this case, clearly the sound system needs to be maintained in order to realize the full potential of the instrument. The manual bass (at least on Allen organs) does not add chords. With the manual bass selected, whatever registration you have pulled for the pedals is played as the lowest note being played on the manual (usually the great) up to some cut-off point (on the Allen it's typically the G below middle C). It can actually be kind of fun, and is a great boon for a piano or keyboard player with no pedal technic (or an organist with a broken leg or ankle ...). You should try it sometime when you have the chance.

@@peterw29 Yes, the only 70's digitals I know of were from Allen Organ (who's tech went into the RMI synthesisers). Going by the Makin website their first digital tone generation system was introduced in the 80's (replacing the system that originated with Compton Organs), so I would say this is 80's at the earliest and would guess this is sample based listening to it which would mean 90's at the earliest.
