Trigger Warning: Descriptions of suicide. If you feel suicidal or know someone in distress, please reach out to them with kindness. You can reach out to local emergency services, helplines, and mental health NGOs here: healthcollectiv...
In 2023, at least 29 students, who were either NEET or JEE aspirants, allegedly died by suicide in Rajasthan’s coaching hub Kota. This was the highest number of student deaths in the city since 2015. In just over a month in 2024, at least four more students have reportedly died by suicide in Kota, in what seems like one tragic loop.
For the last few months, The Quint through its consistent coverage on student suicides in Kota has tried to raise awareness about the problem as well as question the role of the coaching institutes, hostels and PGs, parents, the administration, and the society in pushing students to the brink.
As part of our coverage, we decided to read out excerpts from suicide letters left by young aspirants in the past few years to give an insight into what these students felt - and how they were wronged by the system.
If you'd like to make any suggestions on how we can shed more light on this persistent problem, reach out to us. You can also check out the rest of our coverage here and support us in our endeavour here: 'Suicide Mat Karna Bas': Inside The Kota Crisis (www.thequint.c...)

"One day after my suicide" The day after my suicide, I loved my mother even more, when I saw her crying on the floor of my room, hugging my clothes with my photos scattered around her, I saw so much love past the tears in her eyes. The day after my suicide, I felt how much my father loved me, no matter how hard it was, in the midst of so much sadness, he spoke to me with tears in his eyes about how proud he was of me and how much he loved me. The day after my suicide, I saw Tumble (my furry best friend) was more incredible than I could imagine. Everytime someone came home, he would run to the door excited to see me, and seeing that it was not me, would lay down in front of the door and continue waiting for me. The day after my suicide, I felt the love of my sister when I saw her sitting in her room with eyes full of tears. She remembered the times we played, talked and argued together in our beautiful childhood. Treasured moments. The day after my suicide, I felt how important I was to my best friends. They were looking at all our pictures together...remembering the laughs we shared. The day after my suicide, I felt the sorrow in my teachers. They blamed themselves for not noticing. At night I went to the morgue to look for myself and said: "So many dreams we had", "So many loved ones", "So many people to meet", "You had so many people that loved you, yet you threw it all away?", "You have to have a lot of courage to take your life. Why didn't you use that courage to win?" Thank goodness that was just a vision. Remember: You are still here and can change your life forever. You are better than you think you are. Prettier, smarter and stronger. Make this yours. Save it to notes and read it later. Disclaimer: This is not my story I just wanted to spread it because maybe it helps

I too never really had any friends or anyone with whom i could share my woes to neither there was anyone who genuinely cared enough to even ask if everything's fine. Time passed and so do the phase but it really affected my mental health in more than just one way that even now i feel as if something is lacking. Not marrying, love-marrying, family planning or NOT wanting kids is ALSO NOT AN OPTION for many Indians, they are made to meet a suitor, stand on wedding place amd 'Married off' by their elders the same way they were sent to Kota, one day unbeknownst to them or not caring abt one's own wish , i.e. WITHOUT THEIR CONSENT, and they were forced or made to consummate by guiltripping or social conditioning, culture and give grandkids the same way, they were once sent to Kota against encouraging them to be able to find own choice and their personal decision making ability I mean , in India, the start of a new family system itself start from 'NO AUTONOMY of self choosing to the actual doer of marriage or actual spouse whether to marry, whether to have child or when to', their body rights were disrespected and not cared , how would they know what is encouragement in the first place

The whole system in family in India, is like dictatorian system, where a married patent is seen as superior, children inferior, in that too, father is seen more superior, a mother even one who has her own livelihood is seen placed lower to man, son below them and daughter last, amd trans child not imp at all, that is how family decisions are made for each member without taking consent of that member ie. The most superior patriarch take decision, and lower ranks have to accept it.

My nephew and niece suffer the same from their parents…their father is doing two big mistakes at the same time…he is pressuring my nephew to crack IIT and he always feeds this fear and expectations in his mind…my nephew is just 13 and is still in 7th grade. Secondly, he always puts my niece down by constantly telling her that she would amount to nothing…she is in her 9th grade and is an average student but that doesn’t mean she deserves to be put down that way. I try to tell them but he doesn’t change his behavior. He himself didn’t do well in life nor did he do good in his own studies or career. It’s people like these who put their children under such heavy pressure rubbing their expectations on them. I am a Psychiatrist and I see lots of students from all fields for their problems. One thing I have noticed is Indian parenting style needs to change! Most indians practice authoritarian parenting which leaves no room for mistake. The child blames self for things out of his control and that guilt is immense. Also in our upbringing we aren't raised to have a problem solving attitude or good coping skills at home or school. All these factors lead to these kids falling into Depression under stress.
@chatgpt4135

Not just these, Parents never 'HEAR' their child and often dismiss the child's opinion, decision or problems as 'FAKE'. But when, the same thing is felt by parent itself, they often force kid to accept their views, making child emotionaly dependant to not have own set of ideology ever. Eg. A young marriageable aged girl asked her dad how come is it safe to send a girl aline to 'Someone else's suitor man's house or to meet him or his family alone in a distant hotel chosen solely by them, which area the girl is not acquainted with during arranged marriage meetup'?, Just because the man is of same catse, high package and on marriage bureau diesn't mean he always have good intention? But her dad storms in anger saying 'Nobody thinks dirty when it ckmes to fixing an arranged marriage, women should do what pleases their male suitor otherwise who will marry them?, Fun fact is "IN DAD TIMES, these arranged marriage formal DATES or online matrimony did not exist, so today's ONLINE generation may know more abt FRAUD that take place on such places, so he should have had a mature discussion with an adult daughter. But he dismiss her, accusing of speaking disrespectfully against CULTURE and parents experienced school of belief of authenticuty of INSTITUTION of arranged matches being something heaven designed. But one day he reads an article of harassment that occurs during arranfed marriage dates on online marriage bureau and then suddenly START giving 'ELDER ADVISE LIKE SPEECH' to daughter on how to safeguard herself in this sytems and fix marriage safely. She ask abt why he didn't believe her eaelier, he gets angry again saying 'YOU NEVER SAID THAT, IT NEVER HAPPENED YOU MIGHT BE JOKING.

@@chatgpt4135 Totally agree with you. PARENTS often think they know more than their child. This mentality keeps them in an illusion that they have to take authority of their child and that their every decision will always be beneficial for that child, even though they don't know anything about that topic. Example:- Most parents send their children to prepare for JEE or NEET because they have either seen IIT graduates claiming crores of packages or have a relative who had cleared this exam. Those parents have never prepared for any entrance exam nor they understand how entrance exams are conducted and the sheer amount of competition. They simply think it's like board exam with pass and fail outcomes.

I'm a 17 year old student. I haven't realised the amount of times I've said "mujhse nahi hoga" or "me nahi kar paungi" but at the end always came up with a solution. My best friend and my parents have supported me a lot throughout the process of 11th and 12th. I took science just because it made my father happy and not because I could do it and yet I'm preparing for my boards this year. Listening to these letters made me cry. I wish they had someone to talk to or cry to instead they were surrounded with competitors who made them feel even worse.

I'm currently in the same situation as you. Was the top student in 10th , took science because of my parents and also because I liked it to a extend. Started 11th grade felt miserable with the competitive surrounding couldn't focus or study. Was always told "Science kyu liya fir" exploring is never an option. Giving my boards in a few days barely knowing anything failed my preboards. I don't like what am studying I don't have the courage either.

Then everyone shouldn't be applying for those seats. It's not government's fault, it's our fault. Only the ones who are passionate enough should go behind those seats. Those seats are limited cuz that's how many people of those professions are required! You see so many engineers unemployed today. Why? That's because of how many graduates we are getting every year, there's no job opportunities. You guys have to blame government for everything. And ofc, you need to work hard for achieving smth in life, ofc there are a few seats. Nothing new.

there was an article on this in the newspaper we take. it was put out just a few months back. my dad gave me the paper and asked me to read it. i read through the whole thing. it spoke about how jee and neet prep is very hard and about how many students take their own lives. it also said how the number of suicide cases has significantly increased in the second half of the last decade. once i was done reading it, my dad told me that a lot of money was being spent on me and that i should be glad that i was being allowed to stay at home while preparing for the exams. he also warned me against making too many friends in my new school(i've been forced to change schools as i'm going to be in 11th) and said that i should not even think about embarrassing them by trying to take my own life. i could not speak to my parents for a little while after that. just goes to show how parents need to start caring a little more about their kids and not just their kids' achievements.

I'm in kota and fucked up. But beleive the core problem isn't the coachings, it's the modern mythos , the myths of modernity that have sculpted the minds of teens for a particular roadmap of success. I mean it's a very societal level problem and i myself just can identify the problem but I think I would work for it in future to somehow bring a bit of a change atleast.

I am one of the causualities of 27 s1. Don't feel like crying, only disappointment. Knew there would be inflation. Had a foolish hope for 99.7+ nonetheless. Kitne par 99 banegi? 200? 210? 220? usse zyada to kisi duniya mai possible hi nahi, not even last year in april was it ever above 200. 235/40! Am I having a bad dream? The past 2 years of hard work has led to this? 99.5 in AYJR. Consistently 210+ in coaching mocks. Oh hell, how would I have gotten 99.7+ in later shifts goddamnit, difficult papers are more of my type anyways. A date with death on Valentine's day, huh. Slept at 1 with a alarm for 4. Woke up to this absolute monstrosity. Can't go back to sleep. Will post this in the morning, however. It's all about fucking LUCK. All your efforts mean NOTHING. I repeat, NOTHING. You are a product of the system, and if that system deems you worthless, you sure as well are worthless, you dumb piece of shit. Will I be able to move on and piece myself together after this? Probably not, even though this is the beginning, yet it is the end. How am I supposed to move forward knowing that my luck is more important than my knowledge? It always has been the technicalities huh. Let me tell you an anecdote from the story of a man who has never achieved a single thing in his life. Now that same boy has been dumbstruck by the mother of all technicalities: normalisation. He was never the kind to give excuses. But now he wanted to shout at the top of his lungs, he wanted everyone to know the technicalities, it wasn't an excuse, he did not fail, it was always the system that likes to conspire against him. The massacre of 27 January 2024 AD (9AM-12PM) will forever be etched in history. A battlefield where dreams died, nay, they were murdered in cold blood, by a sadistic boogeyman who probably enjoys what they are doing. Always wanted to be a history maker, turned into an exceptional statistic, studied and feared by students of the future. A hope that they never encounter such a day when they look at our misery. I was there. I was there. I was a victim. I couldn't be better. Please understand. Please understand. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. No one gives a shit, do they? Signing off, An overachieving failure

Have never appeared for JEE but have heard about it and Kota also. JEE and UPSC are the toughest exams out there and it takes a toll on you but you didn't see such thing happening among UPSC aspirants and I think it is because most of them are already grown up. Well on the other side, JEE is conducted for 10+2 which tells you that most of the aspirants are youngsters and they didn't know how to manage their emotions and failures. But because of my family expectations i had to give upsc exams ( tho it was my dream too but depression killed my confidence to sit for exam that year)....Failed 2 attempts....That was a tought time. I could tell nobody what i was going thru all these 4 to 5 years. But i am healing now because i have prioritize myself over any damn exam. 6 months back i told everything to my parents that this time i will first choose to heal myself before sitting for any exam. To my suprise my parents supported me. I just wanted to tell everyone please no exam is bigger than you. No society is bigger than you. After you will die no one in the society will even remember you for whom you are giving up your life because child think his failure will embarrass their parents who are indirectly getting pressurized by the society.

Never make JEE your life's mission. Did you know its easier to get into Stanford, Harvard, MIT and the likes than IIT/IIM? There are so many ways to be successful. Some of the most successful people in the world don't even have a degree. Focus on finding the right career for your skillset and spend most your time enjoying your chosen field. Learn communication skills, social skills, networking skills and entrepreneurship skills. Try to do innovative projects that solves real problems where you live and independent work even before you get into college. Those skills mean more than degrees in the long run. You will be very successful later at work.

I understand the level of competition in India, but the pressure families put on these children is just suffocating. As a parent I could never imagine forcing my expectations on my children. Of course I want what’s best for them, but there are so many routes to success and if all else fails I’m here to support my children forever if needed. Sadly my family were very pushy and when I was struggling at university I did contemplate an extreme step at one point. 20 years on, I’m a successful career women with two children. Anyone even contemplating such an extreme step, find your cheerleaders and support (even if it’s virtual) and try to see that things do get better with time.

She said that NEET preperation is not stressful (ABC bhaiya did it so calmly he did not get stressed), boards exams are not stressful (millions of people do it every year), I was mentally struggling because I do not study and have a male friend with whom she caught me talking at night- yeah thats what giving me stress (I am in the topper's batch of aakash and always in the top 3 at my school- yeah as my mother said I do not study) It gets worst everyday- coaching really sucks those people do not care about the students at all, I have seen it they ignore everyone else and if you are the topper they put heavenly expectations and tremendous burden on you just so than they can print your half dead face in their misleading banners . I chose the medical field cause I loved biology but now this rat race is driving me so crazy, I work like hell these two years of my life to get a government college, with broken infrastructure and academics , and join some coaching for pg and study from there all my mbbs then get almost harrassed by seniors in residency with irrational working hours and stressed life in India's dirty govt. hospitals and prepare for yet another rat race that is super specialisation and still no garuntee of sucess. I love studying and yes doctor is a noble profession, but not at the cost of my mental health. I want to study microbiology and genetics , but my parents think that a B.S/M.S degree = unemployment . It doesn't matter how well you study. This system is flawed to core. If anyone believes that hyping up such an examination is a wise idea then I beg to differ. Plenty of people giving this examination with hard work but at the last moment it'll boil down to how talented you are. You must have some amount of talent no matter how hard you work. People around us has lied to us. Hard work can only bring improvement but it won't necessarily make you a topper.

Yeah just stay strong. It is tough but try to remain positive and give some time to your mental health. Your health is far more important than these exams Give your best efforts but one exam is not the end and there will be many other opportunities too

it's easy for parents to taunt their child and giving excuse that whatever we are doing is for your good career but to all the childrens it hearts a lot when we do a lot of hard work but didn't get the desired result and gets taunted that u didn't do your work properly

3:14 the child mentioned his parents, i just cant imagine how much the mother would be cussing herself that her child suicided blaming her

She should cuss at herself for raising her like that. If u don’t know how to parent a child, don’t produce them. Kids are not some kind of investment, they can and should choose whatever they want in life.

I am 25 years old girl, preparing for UPSC. IN last 4 attempts i coulndt ever cleared even prelims....along with it i failed in CGL, RBI, EPFO and many one day exams....I want to make my own identity but couldnt succeed till now...I too thought of sucide but recent demise of my loving mother i totally shooked up...i cry daily for not making her proud of what she always dreamt of...and now these failures are just killing me.
